Divine Humility

It is plain from Scripture that we should think that there is some sense in which God exhibits humility. We thus need a conception of humility that is compatible with its being a feature exhibited by God. The most promising such conception is that of a disposition not to invoke reasons of status when deciding whether to act for the sake of other worthwhile ends. Such reasons of status are ascribed to God in the holiness framework. God is humble insofar as God has not stood on God’s status by refraining from creating at all; or, having created, by leaving us entirely to our own devices and not revealing Godself to us; or, even if revealed to us, refraining from becoming incarnate as one of us. It is a further positive feature of the holiness framework that it enables us to illuminate God’s nearly unthinkable humility.

In this work, the pomological characteristics, phenolic composition, and chemical contents modification in response to treated wastewater (TWW) irrigation was studied on olive fruits. The experiment was carried out during two successive years (2016/2017) on olive trees (cv. Chemlali). Three irrigation treatments were adopted and two TWW irrigation levels were applied (T1: 20% ETc; T2: 40% ETc; CT: Control Treatment (rainfed condition)). Results show that TWW irrigation leads to increased fruit fresh weight and water content, whatever the level applied. In addition, fruit oil content remained unaffected by TWW irrigation. Moreover, this agronomic practice preserves some phenolic compound contents like verbascoside, therefore fruits nutritional value. A positive feature was then observed following TWW irrigation. In fact, oleuropein, tyrosol, luteolin-7-glucoside, and pinoresinol amounts were enhanced in treated olive fruits. On the other hand, TWW irrigated trees with a level of 40% ETc (T2) produced olive fruits richer in Mg and K than those cultivated in rainfed conditions (CT). Fruits Zn, Mn, and Pb contents decreased as a result of olive trees TWW irrigation.

This case study examines the way an adolescent Black boy extends his kinship network as a part of navigating and demonstrating agency in mentoring relationships with nonparental adults. We purposively selected one participant, Bodos, from the sample of a larger mixed-method study involving youth, aged 12 to 18 years, in the southeastern United States. Drawing on narrative methodology, we used a holistic-content approach to analyze Bodos’ responses to semistructured interviews. Bodos used several narratives to describe his experiences. We offer three findings: (a) Fictive kinship is a positive feature of Black adaptive culture that can be leveraged by Black youth as a tool for creating a distinct relational dynamic with their mentors, (b) adolescent Black boys possess skills and knowledge that both preexist and emerge within positive mentoring relationships, and (c) youth agency and expectations manifest in mentoring relationships to inform and influence those adults’ significance. This case study furthers the field’s understanding of how cultural practices can positively influence relational development and create a unique relational context and experience.

AbstractSynthesis of Ni and Zn substituted nano-greigite, Fe3S4, is achieved from single source diethyldithiocarbamato precursor compounds, producing particles typically 50–100 nm in diameter with plate-like pseudohexagonal morphologies. Up to 12 wt.% Ni is incorporated into the greigite structure, and there is evidence that Zn is also incorporated but Co is not substituted into the lattice. The FeL3X-ray absorption spectra for these materials have a narrow single peak at 707.7 eV and the resulting main X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) has the same sign at 708.75 eV. All XMCD spectra also have a broad positive feature at 711 eV, a characteristic of covalent mixing. The greigite XMCD spectra contrast with the three clearly defined XMCD site specific peaks found in the ferrite spinel, magnetite. The FeL2,3X-ray absorption spectra and XMCD spectra of the greigite reflect and reveal the high conductivity of greigite and the very strong covalency of the Fe–S bonding. The electron hopping between Fe3+and Fe2+on octahedral sites results in an intermediate oxidation state of the Fe in the Ohsite of Fe2.5+producing an effective formula of [Fe3+↑]A-site[2Fe2.5+↓]B-siteS42–]. The NiL2,3X-ray absorption spectra and XMCD reveal substitution on the Ohsite with a strongly covalent character and an oxidation state <Ni1.5+in a representative formula [Fe3+↑]A[[(2 – x)Fe2.5+↓][Nix1.5+]]BS42–.

In democracy, the people take the place of a single and universal God. Since the first democracy’s modern theorizations there is a tendency to give the people the (not) attributes of a single god. This abstraction of features allows the people to include all the differences and particularities and then universalizes itself as the source and foundation of all power. The people in democracy are not only innate, uncaused, immortal, incorporeal, unextended, are omnipresent, omniscient (or infallible) and omnipotent - negative attributes as well. The people have also virtues that have been established as human, which, because sacralized, sublimated, are negative attributes as well. The only positive feature of the people, to be full age, reveals its functional nature. The voice of the people is the voice of a God. Therefore the single God creates over his voice, the people creates in an election result. In democracy, this voice creates in an infallible way.

This chapter seeks to address the misleading assumption that vocational discernment should lead a person toward a clear and definitive goal. In practice, the process of finding one’s callings will necessarily be accompanied by doubt and uncertainty; in fact, the ambiguous and shadowy nature of vocation can be a positive feature. Many stories from various religious traditions remind us that even the most deeply committed and vocationally focused individuals have experienced doubt about their own callings and uncertainty about their lives. The chapter cites a range of scholarly literature on vocation to emphasize this point, then illustrates it through various elements in the Qur’an—including a detailed retelling the story of Joseph. Like Joseph, many people may retrospectively come to see how the various elements of their lives have been woven together, even if they faced a great deal of doubt and uncertainty along the way.

In order to conclude our discussion of the value of information technology, we need to answer these questions: What characteristics does IT share with modern technology generally? What is its place with respect to the rest of technology and with respect to the rest of the world? The goal of this chapter is to formulate how information technology might interact with ethical principles required at the species level, ecosystem level, and the level of being as a whole. I also want to consider the impact of these ethical principles on our responsibilities as IT professionals. The most positive feature of information technology is its potential to contribute to the increase in human consciousness by making more knowledge more widely available. Yet it can just as easily enable questionable applications of technology that further our extinction as a species or the destruction of the ecosystem. Let us begin by asking of information technology the questions we asked about technology generally: Is information technology a neutral means? Does it have its own ends and point of view?

This narrative inquiry explores how Finnish schoolteachers perceived the emotion of pride as a feature of teaching and learning. The study consists of face-to-face interviews with Finnish schoolteachers between 30 and 62 years of age. The results reveal perceptions of teaching and learning that are shaped by a culture of social equality, modesty, group achievement, and tenacity, that is, Sisu. Although the teachers understand achievement pride as a positive feature of learning, in association with cultural norms and values, pride is not a significant emotional response to promote in the classroom. The results are important for understanding how teachers exploit larger cultural values to judge the worth of particular emotions in the classroom.

Abstract The observation of spatial and functional relations within ecosystems (Forman, Godron, 1993; Michal, 1994; Jongman, 1995 a,b) and Territorial Systems of Ecological Stability and their design have a successful history not only in the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Hungary but also in Slovakia and other countries. The main principle of their design is to create an ecological network in intensively utilised landscape through revitalisation of the existing natural habitats and creation of new ones along with the proposal of their protection and management. The presented contribution represents an example of the proposed spatial framework of ecological stability and management measures in the cadastral area of Klasov. The cadastral area is characterised by prevailing large-block arable parcels and viticultural history. In spite of the agricultural character of the landscape, there are also areas with dispersed non-forest woody vegetation, preserved bank vegetation along streams, wetlands with reed associations, forest growths and mosaics of old abandoned orchards and vineyards as the potential elements of the proposed spatial framework of ecological stability. A functional LTSES framework and implementation of the system of ecostabilizing measures may contribute to increasing diversity of the territory and improvement of its spatial ecological stability. Efforts aimed at the recovery of vine-growing tradition represent a positive feature in terms of increased diversity in the territory.

Dog guardianship encourages people to exercise and visit public parks, and it’s a positive feature for senior citizens. This research tested the hypothesis that the effect park quality has on the time that seniors spend walking their dogs is mediated by the attitude of other park visitors toward the dogs and influences dog guardians’ perceived health. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among dog-guardians (> 65 years) in four parks of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. A 13-item questionnaire was administered; park quality and district geomorphology were appraised using gis analysis and field observations. Park quality had a significant and negative indirect effect on perceived health through the mediators’ “dog complaints” and “time spent dog-walking” operating in a serial, causal sequence. Better park quality was related to less dog-walking time and to poorer perceived health; more visitors were attracted and there were increased complaints against dogs. Better park planning for dog walkers is needed.
