Patterns of Social Inclusion and Exclusion Among Youth Living in Stigmatized Neighborhoods

This chapter is an ethnographic case study of the social integration trajectories of youth living in two stigmatized and poor neighborhoods in Montevideo. It explains the linkages between residential segregation and social inclusion and exclusion patterns in unequal urban neighborhoods. Most empirical neighborhood research on the effects of residential segregation in contexts of high poverty and extreme stigmatization have focused on its negative effects. However, the real mechanisms and mediations influencing the so-called neighborhood effects of residential segregation are still not well understood. Scholars have yet to isolate specific neighborhood effects and their contribution to processes of social inclusion and exclusion. Focusing on the biographical experiences of youth in marginalized neighborhoods, this ethnography demonstrates the relevance of social mediations that modulate both positive and negative residential segregation effects.

Research in the neighborhood effects tradition has primarily concerned itself with understanding the consequences of growing up in high-poverty neighborhoods. In recent years, however, the in-migration of relatively affluent households into disinvested central city neighborhoods—commonly referred to as gentrification—has markedly risen, transforming the racial, socioeconomic, and institutional composition of many urban neighborhoods. This article examines what existing literature reveals about what these changes mean for children’s academic achievement, with particular attention paid to the impacts of gentrification-induced changes to the social ecology, institutional composition, residential stability, and environmental conditions of urban neighborhoods. The final section proposes a rigorous interdisciplinary research agenda for advancing this budding field of education research.

The ability to argue and to create alliances with peers are important social competencies for all children, including those who have speech, language and communication needs. In this study, we investigated the management of arguments and alliances by a group of 5-year-old male friends, one of whom has a persisting speech difficulty (PSD). Twelve argument episodes that arose naturally during video-recorded free play at school were analysed, using Conversation Analysis. Overall the data show that the child with PSD was just as likely as one of his friends to be included in, or excluded from, play alliances. Detailed analysis of two episodes reveals that the child with PSD competently used a range of linguistic devices in and around arguments and that his speech difficulties apparently did not impact on his ability to form alliances. This study highlights the need for those of us who work with children to take account of peer interactions and to consider the linguistic strategies that children employ when participating in peer talk and play: the social world in which inclusion and exclusion are accomplished. The study also illustrates the value of qualitative micro-interactional analysis as a research tool for investigating social inclusion and exclusion.

Abstract This paper investigates the effects of the conditions of local labour markets on the social networks of immigrants, with an emphasis on co-ethnic contact and contact with people native to the locality. This study focuses on the case of immigrants in the Netherlands. For this case, I derived and empirically tested a job and residential search model. I found that a high job arrival rate and large wage differences between the ethnic labour market and the host labour market both correlate with immigrants developing stronger co-ethnic networks and weaker native networks as well as with immigrants choosing to live in more ethnically concentrated areas. These findings suggest that local economic prosperity does not necessarily beget social integration: in this case study, immigrants spontaneously assimilated less into the host society during a good economic period.

Entre los avances espectaculares que a nivel social y económico se reportan en los últimos años con la apertura de la Revolución Ciudadana en el Ecuador, cabe destacar el incremento de las posibilidades de acceso a las universidades de las clases menos favorecidas; pero paradójicamente ha surgido de manera asociada otro de los grandes males que afecta a la institución  universitaria,  que resulta el  alto  porcentaje de estudiantes  que abandonan  los estudios antes de finalizarlos, con un impacto económico negativo para los esfuerzos que realiza el estado en este sentido. Objective: While the process of social inclusion have promoted respect for the person with mental disability, the stigma against this individual is still very present in society, so that individual identified from their difference, now identified as being a weak, fragile and sometimes abnormal and identified as someone with a determination that can break barriers, even the difference. Considering that the social integration of individuals with disabilities still means a great challenge for society, this study sought to discuss issues related to targeted assistance to the population with mental disabilities within this integration process. The way society perceives and relates to people with disabilities is a repetition of the speech and behavior of its own professionals and programs involved in social integration and rehabilitation of these individuals.Conclusion: The educational institutions of human resources, and assistance programs aimed at the disabled, need to promote reflections on the densest kind of discourse and practices used in everyday life of these people and their families. They should not act based on rejudice.

Abstrak. Penggunaan media sosial semakin meningkat dari tahun ke tahun, namun demikian tidak semua konten media sosial memiliki sisi positif. Beberapa dampak negatif penggunaan media sosial seperti penyebaran berita bohong (hoax), ujaran kebencian (hate speech), perundungan (cyberbullying) dan konten negatiflainnya merupakan bentuk-bentuk penyalahgunaan media sosial menjadi keprihatinan masyarakat karena telah memasuki  ranah sosial, politik, ekonomi dan bahkan keagamaan. Hal ini tidak terlepas dari kapitalisasi koorporasi media sosial yang terus berkembang dengan terpaan yang semakin meluas melintasi batas negara dan bangsa, masuk dalam kehidupan berbagai generasi, strata sosial ekonomi, tingkat pendidikan dan latar belakang pendidikan serta pengalaman. Metode yang digunakan dalam tulisan ini adalah teoritis kualitatif yang didasarkan pada pengamatan terhadap isi media sosial dan kajian teoritis yang berusaha menjelaskan pengaruh isi media terhadap perilaku masyarakat dalam bermedia sebagai bahan pengayaan  (enrichment) bagi kegiatan literasi media sosial di kalangan masyarakat bagi para pegiat literasi. Penjelasan teoritis yang dipakai meliputi aspek positif dan negatif dilihat dari aspek sosial, politik, psikologi, pendidikan dan kebudayaan. Hasilnya konten budaya lokal memiliki peluang mengisi konten dalam ruang media sosial dan konten budaya lokal yang selektif, kreatif, edukatif, dan sekaligus menghibur  dapat digunakan untuk meminimalkan dampak negatif globalisasi dan kapitalisme media sosial. Manfaat lain dari sosialisasi dari promosi budaya lokal di media sosial adalah untuk meningkatkan integrasi masyarakat karena didalamnya terdapat nilai-nilai kearifan lokal yang memiliki nilai bersifat nasional bahkan universal.Abstract. Social media uses have been increasing from year to year. However, not all social media content has a positive side. Some negative effects of social media from hoaxes, hate speech, cyberbullying to other negative content are the forms of abuse of social media. It is concern to the public because these have entered the social, political, economic and religious spheres. It is definitely inseparable from the capitalization of a social media corporation. It has been developing with increasingly widespread exposure across national borders, and it has been entering into the lives of various generations, socio-economic strata, education levels and educational backgrounds and experiences as well. The research method used in this research was a qualitative theoretical approach based on observations of social media content and theoretical studies. It aims at seeking to explain the influence of media content on people's behavior in their media use as the enrichment material for social media literacy activities in society for literacy activists. The theoretical explanations used in this research include positive and negative aspects. In this matter the social, political, psychological, educational and cultural perspectives will see the aspects. Moreover, the research results show that local cultural content has the opportunity to fill content in the social media space. Selective, creative, educative, and entertaining local cultural content can be used to minimize the negative effects of globalization and social media capitalism. Another benefit of socialization of local culture promotion on social media is to increase social integration because in the local culture there are local wisdom values and national or universal values as well.

In this article, the author, based on concrete factual material, explores the specifics of modern migration processes considered within an urban area localized in Palermo (Sicily). In the context of this complex heterotopic space, resorting to the conceptual apparatus of M. Foucault, this kind of rhizome, if we operate with the concepts of J. Deleuze and F.Guattari, the author analyzes the actions of various actors of power – local and transnational – which dominate in this closed socio-urban environment, outlined by the framework of certain city blocks, – formal and informal, institutionalized and not, state and extra-state, legal and illegal, political, social, ecclesiastical, economic, criminal, the objects of projection and manifestation of which are migrants (primarily illegal) concentrated in these urban areas, who coexist there with the local population. The author also studies reactions of “newcomers” to the factors that affect them, including their ways of understanding and familiarizing with of their new place of residence as a micro- and the macrocosm, in all the diversity and complexity of the social connections that permeate this habitat and the factors that affect it.

The term 'welcoming community' has arisen within the field of immigration studies as a concept that seeks to address ways in which communities welcome and integrate immigrants. This paper explores the concept of a welcoming community and its impact on the social integration of immigrants to smaller centres, specifically to the City of St. John's in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, using a social inclusion framework. Through an examination of the integration policies and programs undertaken in the Province and how immigrants interact with these services. I find the elements of a welcoming community exist in St. John's and that immigrants' frequency and intensity of contact with institutions that directly support settlement is high in St. John's. However, it is premature to conclude, given the recent implementation of the immigration policy in the Province and low numbers of contacts made with other institutions, that St. John's is a welcoming community and that this translates into successful social integration.

In the article, the looks into different possibilities of social integration of people, social groups, pointing to the cause of marginalization – the low level of culture, communication capacity, selfknowledge. Regardless of the social status of the person: poor, employed, unemployed or immigrant, social inclusion is stimulated by the individual’s interest in knowing, acting, and manifesting himself. Social integration can and must be stimulated by state institutions, as well. Otherwise, dissatisfaction among the marginalized will lead to destabilization of the political system and social conflicts. The social integration of immigrants is a way of mitigating the social crisis that has occurred in European countries. The key objectives of the investigation are: to analyze the challenges to the security and instability of the political system of the European States; to define social integration and inclusion as a factor of the dynamic stability of the political system; to interpret marginalization as a destabilizing factor; to analyze the social integration of immigrants through knowledge and communication.
