Geckos owe their remarkable stickiness to millions of dry, hard setae on their toes. In this study, we discovered that gecko setae stick more strongly the faster they slide, and do not wear out after 30 000 cycles. This is surprising because friction between dry, hard, macroscopic materials typically decreases at the onset of sliding, and as velocity increases, friction continues to decrease because of a reduction in the number of interfacial contacts, due in part to wear. Gecko setae did not exhibit the decrease in adhesion or friction characteristic of a transition from static to kinetic contact mechanics. Instead, friction and adhesion forces increased at the onset of sliding and continued to increase with shear speed from 500 nm s −1 to 158 mm s −1 . To explain how apparently fluid-like, wear-free dynamic friction and adhesion occur macroscopically in a dry, hard solid, we proposed a model based on a population of nanoscopic stick–slip events. In the model, contact elements are either in static contact or in the process of slipping to a new static contact. If stick–slip events are uncorrelated, the model further predicted that contact forces should increase to a critical velocity ( V *) and then decrease at velocities greater than V *. We hypothesized that, like natural gecko setae, but unlike any conventional adhesive, gecko-like synthetic adhesives (GSAs) could adhere while sliding. To test the generality of our results and the validity of our model, we fabricated a GSA using a hard silicone polymer. While sliding, the GSA exhibited steady-state adhesion and velocity dependence similar to that of gecko setae. Observations at the interface indicated that macroscopically smooth sliding of the GSA emerged from randomly occurring stick–slip events in the population of flexible fibrils, confirming our model predictions.

Abstract In an effort to understand the dynamic hub forces on road vehicles, an advanced free-rolling tire-model is being developed in which the tread blocks and tire belt are modeled separately. This paper presents the interim results for the tread block modeling. The finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit is used to predict the contact forces on the tread blocks based on a linear viscoelastic material model. Special attention is paid to investigating the forces on the tread blocks during the impact and release motions. A pressure and slip-rate-dependent frictional law is applied in the analysis. A simplified numerical model is also proposed where the tread blocks are discretized into linear viscoelastic spring elements. The results from both models are validated via experiments in a high-speed rolling test rig and found to be in good agreement.

The friction characteristics resulting from the motion of one surface over another form a very important facet of the behaviour of many physical systems. This statement is particularly valid when considering the behaviour of machine tool slideways. Most slideway elements consist of two plain surfaces whose friction characteristic is modified by the addition of a lubricant. In many cases the complete slideway consists of many mating surfaces and the choice of slideway material, slideway machining and lubricant is often influenced by the long term problem of wear. The aim of this paper is to present results of experiments on a test rig designed to be representative of machine tool slideway conditions; the experiments were wholly concerned with the behaviour of the bearing under dynamic conditions. The major emphasis is on results obtained with a polar additive lubricant which appears to exclude the possibility of ‘stick-slip’ oscillations. A parallel series of tests are reported where a normal hydraulic oil was used as lubricant. The use of this second lubricant allowed some study of the ‘stick-slip’ process. The dynamic friction characteristics, cyclic friction characteristics and damping capacity of several slideway surface combinations have been obtained and are discussed in the context of earlier work in the field and the role of slideways in machine tool behaviour.

Miniature devices including MEMS and the head disk interface in magnetic storage often include very smooth surfaces, typically having root-mean-square roughness, σ of the order of 10 nm or less. When such smooth surfaces contact, or come into proximity of each other, either in dry or wet environments, then strong intermolecular (adhesive) forces may arise. Such strong intermolecular forces may result in unacceptable and possibly catastrophic adhesion, stiction, friction and wear. In the present paper, a model termed sub-boundary lubrication (SBL) adhesion model is used to calculate the adhesion forces, and an elastic-plastic model is used to calculate the contact forces at typical MEMS interfaces. Several levels of surface roughness are investigated representing polished and as-deposited polysilicon films that are typically found in MEMS. The SBL adhesion model reveals the significance of the surface roughness on the adhesion and pull-off forces as the surfaces become smoother. The validity of using the SBL adhesion model to estimate the pull-off forces in miniature systems is further supported by direct comparison with experimental pull-off force measurements performed on silicon and gold interfaces. Finally, the significance of the interfacial forces as relate to the reliability of MEMS interfaces is discussed.

Abstract Frictional vibrations, such as stick-slip motion and automobile-brake squeal, which occur when two solid bodies are rubbed together, are analyzed mathematically and observed experimentally. The conditions studied are slow uniform motion and relatively rapid simple harmonic motion of brake lining over a cast-iron base. The equations of motion show and the observations confirm that frictional vibrations are caused primarily by an inverse variation of coefficient of friction with sliding velocity, but their form and occurrence are greatly dependent upon the dynamical constants of the mechanical system. With a constant coefficient of friction, the vibration initiated whenever sliding begins is rapidly damped out, not by the friction but by the “natural” damping of all mechanical systems. The coefficient of friction of most brake linings and other organic materials was essentially invariant with velocity, except that the static coefficient was usually greater than the sliding coefficient. Most such materials usually showed a small decrease in coefficient with increasing temperature. The persistent vibrations resulting from the excess static friction were reduced or eliminated by treating the rubbing surfaces with polar organic compounds which produced a rising friction characteristic.

Auxetic foams exhibit novel mechanical properties due to their unique microstructure for improved energy-absorption and cavity expansion applications that have fascinated the scientific community since their inception. Given the advancements in material processing and performance of polymer open cell auxetic foams, there is a strong desire to fully understand the nonlinear rate-dependent deformation of these materials. The influence of nonlinear compressibility is introduced here along with relaxation effects to improve model predictions for different stretch rates and finite deformation regimes. The viscoelastic behavior of the material is analyzed by comparing fractional order and integer order calculus models. All results are statistically validated using maximum entropy methods to obtain Bayesian posterior densities for the hyperelastic, auxetic, and viscoelastic parameters. It is shown that fractional order viscoelasticity provides [Formula: see text]–[Formula: see text] improvement in prediction over integer order viscoelastic models when the model is calibrated at higher stretch rates where viscoelasticity is more significant.

A new rate-dependent stochastic damage model for the dynamic modeling of concrete is presented in the paper. This model is formulated on the basis of the stochastic damage model, from which, the static stochastic evolution of damage is strictly derived. Then, rate dependency of concrete is included by means of viscous-damage mechanism. The model predictions are tested against experimental results on concrete specimens that cover different strain rates. The results demonstrate the proposed model may predict dynamic failure behavior of concrete quite well.

Computational models that predict in vivo joint loading and muscle forces can potentially enhance and augment our knowledge of both typical and pathological gaits. To adopt such models into clinical applications, studies validating modeling predictions are essential. This study created a full-body musculoskeletal model using data from the “Sixth Grand Challenge Competition to Predict in vivo Knee Loads.” This model incorporates subject-specific geometries of the right leg in order to concurrently predict knee contact forces, ligament forces, muscle forces, and ground contact forces. The objectives of this paper are twofold: (1) to describe an electromyography (EMG)-driven modeling methodology to predict knee contact forces and (2) to validate model predictions by evaluating the model predictions against known values for a patient with an instrumented total knee replacement (TKR) for three distinctly different gait styles (normal, smooth, and bouncy gaits). The model integrates a subject-specific knee model onto a previously validated generic full-body musculoskeletal model. The combined model included six degrees-of-freedom (6DOF) patellofemoral and tibiofemoral joints, ligament forces, and deformable contact forces with viscous damping. The foot/shoe/floor interactions were modeled by incorporating shoe geometries to the feet. Contact between shoe segments and the floor surface was used to constrain the shoe segments. A novel EMG-driven feedforward with feedback trim motor control strategy was used to concurrently estimate muscle forces and knee contact forces from standard motion capture data collected on the individual subject. The predicted medial, lateral, and total tibiofemoral forces represented the overall measured magnitude and temporal patterns with good root-mean-squared errors (RMSEs) and Pearson's correlation (p2). The model accuracy was high: medial, lateral, and total tibiofemoral contact force RMSEs = 0.15, 0.14, 0.21 body weight (BW), and (0.92 < p2 < 0.96) for normal gait; RMSEs = 0.18 BW, 0.21 BW, 0.29 BW, and (0.81 < p2 < 0.93) for smooth gait; and RMSEs = 0.21 BW, 0.22 BW, 0.33 BW, and (0.86 < p2 < 0.95) for bouncy gait, respectively. Overall, the model captured the general shape, magnitude, and temporal patterns of the contact force profiles accurately. Potential applications of this proposed model include predictive biomechanics simulations, design of TKR components, soft tissue balancing, and surgical simulation.

Many studies have used musculoskeletal models to predict in vivo muscle forces at the knee during gait [1, 2]. Unfortunately, quantitative assessment of the model calculations is often impracticable. Various indirect methods have been used to evaluate the accuracy of model predictions, including comparisons against measurements of muscle activity, joint kinematics, ground reaction forces, and joint moments. In a recent study, an instrumented hip implant was used to validate calculations of hip contact forces directly [3]. The same model was subsequently used to validate model calculations of tibiofemoral loading during gait [4]. Instrumented knee implants have also been used in in vitro and in vivo studies to quantify differences in biomechanical performance between various TKR designs [5, 6]. The main aim of the present study was to evaluate model predictions of knee muscle forces by direct comparison with measurements obtained from an instrumented knee implant. Calculations of muscle and joint-contact loading were performed for level walking at slow, normal, and fast speeds.

An exact transformation method is introduced that reduces the governing equations of a continuum structure coupled to strong nonlinearities to a low-dimensional equation with memory. The method is general and well suited to problems with isolated discontinuities such as friction and impact at point contact. It is assumed that the structure is composed of two parts: a continuum but linear structure and finitely many discrete but strong nonlinearities acting at various contact points of the elastic structure. The localized nonlinearities include discontinuities, e.g. the Coulomb friction law. Despite the discontinuities in the model, we demonstrate that contact forces are Lipschitz continuous in time at the onset of sticking for certain classes of structures. The general formalism is illustrated for a continuum elastic body coupled to a Coulomb-like friction model.
