Water, the bloodstream of the biosphere, determines the sustainability of living systems. The essential role of water is expanded in a conceptual model of energy dissipation, based on the water balance of whole landscapes. In this model, the underlying role of water phase changes--and their energy-dissipative properties--in the function and the self-organized development of natural systems is explicitly recognized. The energy-dissipating processes regulate the ecological dynamics within the Earth's biosphere, in such a way that the development of natural systems is never allowed to proceed in an undirected or random way. A fundamental characteristic of self-organized development in natural systems is the increasing role of cyclic processes while loss processes are correspondingly reduced. This gives a coincidental increase in system efficiency, which is the basis of growing stability and sustainability. Growing sustainability can be seen as an increase of ecological efficiency, which is applicable at all levels up to whole landscapes. Criteria for necessary changes in society and for the design of the measures that are necessary to restore sustainable landscapes and waters are derived.

Although very famous, some key moments of the novel In Search of Lost Time, such as those of the madeleine or the uneven pavement, often remain enigmatic for the reader. Our article attempts to formulate a possible philosophical interpretation of the narrator's experiences during these scenes, through a confrontation of the Proustian text with the ideas found in the System of Transcendental Idealism (1800) of the German philosopher F. W. J. Schelling. We thus try to highlight the essential role of the self in Marcel Proust's aesthetic thinking, by showing that the mysterious happiness felt by the narrator, and from which the project of creating a work of art is ultimately born, is similar to the experiences of pure self-consciousness evoked and analyzed by Schellingian philosophy of art.

Rather than understanding history as a process guided by an entity (Geist) that is aiming at the goal of coming to a full self-consciousness, this chapter argues that Hegel’s philosophy should be understood against the background of his Aristotelian- and Kantian-inspired metaphysics. Using his Logic as the background, the author argues that his philosophy of history is an examination of the metaphysical contours of subjectivity and how the self-interpreting, self-developing collective human enterprise has moved from one such shape to another in terms of deeper logic of sense-making, and how this has meant that subjectivity itself has reshaped itself over the course of history. The role of the “infinite end” of justice thereby is shown to play an essential role in making sense of history.

Depending on the operating conditions, different regimes can be obtained in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD): filamentary, diffuse (also called homogeneous) or self-organized. For a plane-to-plane DBD operated at high frequency (160 kHz) and at atmospheric pressure in helium gas, we show that the addition of a small amount of nitrogen induces a transition from the diffuse regime to a self-organized regime characterized by the appearance of filaments at the exit of the discharge. In this paper, we detail mechanisms that could be responsible of the transition from diffuse mode to this self-organized mode. We point out the critical role of the power supply and the importance of the gas memory effect from one discharge to the following one on the transition to the self-organised mode. The self-organized mode is usually attributed to a surface memory effect. In this work, we show an additional involvement of the gas memory effect on the self-organized mode.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the life narratives “Where have All the Songs and Rituals Gone?” (2019) by Mozinha Fernandes and “A Velip Writes Back” (2019) by Priyanka Velip, members of the Adivasi community of Goa, who consider themselves as the first inhabitants of this Indian state. These narratives have been published in the blog “Hanv Konn. Who am I? Researching the Self” organized by the late professor from the University of Goa, Alito Siqueira, whose aim is to give voice to this marginalized and silenced community. The analysis will be done in terms of the concepts of Postmemory (Hirsch, 1996, 1997, 2008), Trauma (Ginzburg, 2008; Balaev, 2008), Narrative (Bruner, 2002; Coracini, 2007), and Life-narratives (Smith & Watson, 2010).

Abstract. In order to increase the credibility on the presence of electromagnetic phenomena associated with an earthquake, we have suggested the importance of the modulation (or fluctuation) seen in the time-series data of any seismogenic effects. This paper reviews the fluctuation spectra of seismogenic phenomena in order to indicate the modulation mechanisms in the lithosphere, atmosphere and ionosphere/magnetosphere. Especially, the effect of Earth's tides in the lithosphere and the modulation in the atmosphere (acoustic and atmospheric gravity waves) are discussed and this kind of fluctuation spectra would further provide essential information on the generation mechanisms of different seismogenic effects. Furthermore, the important role of the slope of fluctuation spectra is suggested in order to investigate the self-organized criticality before the lithospheric rupture and its associated effects in different regions such as the ionosphere.

ABSTRACTDuring gastrulation, the coordinated activity of BMP, WNT and NODAL signaling pathways guide the differentiation of the pluripotent epiblast into the three germinal layers. Recent studies underline the role of the Hippo-effector YAP1 regulating WNT and NODAL signaling pathways and repressing mesoendodermal differentiation in human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). However, the contribution of YAP1 to the cell-fate patterning decisions that transform the epiblast in a three-germ layer gastrula remains unknown. We address this question by analyzing micropatterned 2D-gastruloids derived from hESCs, in the presence and absence of YAP1. Our findings show that YAP1 is necessary for gastrulation. YAP1 KO-gastruloids display reduced ectoderm layer and enlarged mesoderm and endoderm layers, compared to WT. Furthermore, YAP1 regulates the self-organized patterning of the hESCs, as the discrete position of the three germ layers is altered in the YAP1 KO-gastruloids. Our epigenome (single-nuclei ATACseq) and transcriptome (RNA-seq) analysis revealed that YAP1 directly represses the chromatin accessibility and transcription of key genes in the NODAL pathway, including the NODAL and FOXH1 genes. In WT gastruloids, a gradient of NODAL: SMAD2.3 signaling from the periphery to the center of the colony regulates the exit of pluripotency toward endoderm, mesoderm and ectoderm, respectively. Hence, in the absence of YAP1, a hyperactive NODAL signaling retains SMAD2.3 in the nuclei impeding the self-organized differentiation of hESCs. Accordingly, the partial inhibition of NODAL signaling is sufficient to rescue the differentiation and pattern -defective phenotypes of the YAP1 KO gastruloids. Our work revealed that YAP1 is a master regulator of NODAL signaling, essential to instruct germ layer fate patterning in human gastruloids.

The figure shows the FESEM image of the self-organized, highly ordered TiO2 nanotube arrays formed with an anodization potential of 60 V employing 3 vol% of H2O2 in an ethylene glycol electrolyte. The sample exhibited a maximum porosity of 88%.
