A Gram-positive bacterial strain containing l-ornithine as the diagnostic diamino acid was isolated from a sea-water-sample from the East Sea, Korea. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain JC1078T represents a phyletic line within the suborder Micrococcineae of the order Actinomycetales, adjacent to the genus Ornithinimicrobium. The highest sequence similarity values to the isolate were observed against Ornithinimicrobium humiphilum (94·3 %) and Kytococcus sedentarius (94·1 %). The strain was strictly aerobic and moderately halophilic with optimal growth at 2–3 % (w/v) NaCl. Cells were non-motile, non-sporulating and coccoid-shaped. The cell wall contains l-ornithine, glutamic acid, alanine, glycine and serine. The major menaquinone was MK-8(H4). The predominant cellular fatty acids were of the iso- and anteiso-methyl-branched types. The polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and an unknown glycolipid. The acyl type of the glycan chain of peptidoglycan is acetyl. The DNA G+C content was 72 mol%. The combination of physiological, biochemical and chemotaxonomical data clearly separated the marine isolate from other members of the suborder Micrococcineae. On the basis of polyphasic evidence, it is proposed to classify strain JC1078T in a novel genus and species, for which the name Serinicoccus marinus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JC1078T (=IMSNU 14026T=KCTC 9980T=DSM 15273T).

A novel Gram-stain-positive, motile, strictly aerobic bacterium, designated YIM 93174T, was isolated from a salt field in Korea. Cells of this strain were rod-shaped and formed pale tangerine colonies and grew at pH 6.0–8.0 (optimal growth at pH 7.0), at 15–45 °C (optimum 28–37 °C) and at salinities of 0–10 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0–2 % NaCl). Some phenotypic characters allowed differentiation of strain YIM 93174T from its nearest phylogenetic relatives. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain YIM 93174T belongs to the genus Bacillus, exhibiting the highest level of sequence similarity with the type strain of Bacillus humi (95.7 %), followed by those of Bacillus alkalitelluris (94.9 %) and Bacillus litoralis (94.5 %). The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The cell-wall peptidoglycan was of the A1γ type, containing meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 36.9 mol% and the predominant respiratory quinone was MK-7. The major polar lipids of strain YIM 93174T were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside and two unknown phospholipids. On the basis of the evidence from this polyphasic study, strain YIM 93174T represents a novel species of the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus luteolus sp. nov. is proposed, with YIM 93174T ( = DSM 22388T  = KCTC 13210T  = CCTCC AA 208068T) as the type strain.

A Gram-negative, non-motile, non-gliding, strictly aerobic, pale yellow colony-forming, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated HM0024T, was isolated from coastal seawater of the Yellow Sea and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomy study. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, strain HM0024T was most closely related to Chryseobacterium balustinum LMG 8329T (94.4 %), Chryseobacterium scophthalmum LMG 13028T (94.4 %), Chryseobacterium piscium LMG 23089T (94.3 %) and Elizabethkingia meningoseptica ATCC 13253T (94.0 %) and shared less than 92 % sequence similarity with other members of the family Flavobacteriaceae. Phylogenetic analyses showed that strain HM0024T formed an independent phyletic line of descent within the family Flavobacteriaceae. The DNA G+C content of the strain was 29.6 mol% and its major cellular fatty acids (>10 %) were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C17 : 1 ω7c and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω6c and/or C16 : 1 ω7c). The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-6 and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and several aminolipids. Strain HM0024T was differentiated from phylogenetically related members of the family by having lower DNA G+C content, larger proportions of summed feature 3, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 3-OH and particular phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of phenotypic and phylogenetic data, strain HM0024T is classified as a representative of a novel genus and species, for which the name Soonwooa buanensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Soonwooa buanensis is HM0024T (=KCTC 22689T =CECT 7503T).

A Gram-negative, slightly halophilic, non-pigmented, strictly aerobic, chemo-organotrophic bacterium was isolated from Mediterranean sea water off the Spanish coast near Valencia. This strain was poorly reactive, being unable to grow in most carbon sources analysed in minimal medium. However, good growth was observed when more complex media and longer incubation times were used. Phylogenetic analysis based on an almost complete 16S rRNA gene sequence placed strain 2SM4T within the Roseobacter group, in the vicinity of uncultured bacteria described as gall symbionts of several species of the red alga Prionitis. Sequence similarity values between strain 2SM4T and the closest neighbouring species were below 95·0 %. The cellular fatty acid composition of the Mediterranean strain confirmed its position within the ‘Alphaproteobacteria’, sharing 18 : 1ω7c as the major cellular fatty acid. The phylogenetic distance from any taxon with a validly published name and also a number of distinguishing features support the designation of strain 2SM4T as representing a novel genus and species, for which the name Nereida ignava gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 2SM4T (=CECT 5292T=DSM 16309T=CIP 108404T=CCUG 49433T).

A novel alkaliphilic, halotolerant, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain YIM CH208T, was isolated from a soda lake in Yunnan, south-west China. The taxonomy of strain YIM CH208T was investigated by a polyphasic approach. Strain YIM CH208T was Gram-negative, strictly aerobic and non-motile and formed red colonies. Optimal growth conditions were 28 °C, pH 8.5 and 0.5–2.5 % NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons showed that the isolate formed a distinct line within a clade containing the genus Echinicola in the phylum Bacteroidetes and was related to the species Echinicola pacifica and Rhodonellum psychrophilum, with sequence similarity of 91.7 and 91.6 % to the respective type strains. The DNA G+C content was 45.1 mol%. The major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-7 (MK-7). The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C17 : 1 ω9c (19.9 %), C15 : 0 3-OH (12.1 %), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (11.3 %), summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1 ω7c; 10.7 %) and C17 : 1 ω6c (8.7 %). On the basis of the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain YIM CH208T represents a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Litoribacter ruber gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Litoribacter ruber is YIM CH208T (=ACCC 05414T =KCTC 22899T).

A novel, yellow-pigmented actinobacterium was isolated from a small stone collected in Jeju, Republic of Korea. The cells of the organism, designated strain R-Ac013T, were Gram-positive, aerobic, non-motile cocci that occurred singly or in pairs. The strain showed growth at 10–37 °C and pH 4.1–11.1, and tolerated 2 % NaCl. On the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence, the organism was phylogenetically related to members of the genera Tetrasphaera (94.6–97.1 % sequence similarity), Terrabacter (96.5 %), Knoellia (96.4 %), Terracoccus (96.4 %), Oryzihumus (96.4 %), Janibacter (96.1–96.4 %) and Intrasporangium (96.2 %). The chemotaxonomic results for the organism were as follows: ll-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid in the peptidoglycan, acetyl-type murein, MK-8(H4) as the major menaquinone, a DNA G+C content of 74.1 mol%, and a polar lipid profile that comprised diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol. The fatty acid profile consisted of iso- and anteiso-methyl-branched, straight-chain saturated and monounsaturated types, the major components being iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1 ω8c and iso-C15 : 0. The combination of the phenotypic and phylogenetic data revealed that this strain represents a novel genus and species of the family Intrasporangiaceae, for which the name Lapillicoccus jejuensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain R-Ac013T (=KCTC 19200T=DSM 18607T).

A Gram-staining-negative, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped, pale-pink pigmented bacterial strain, designated TF8T, was isolated from leaf mould in Cheonan, Republic of Korea. Its taxonomic position was determined through a polyphasic approach. Optimal growth occurred on R2A agar without NaCl supplementation, at 25–28 °C and at pH 6.0–7.0. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain TF8T belongs to the genus Mucilaginibacter in the family Sphingobacteriaceae . The sequence similarity between 16S rRNA genes of strain TF8T and the type strains of other species of the genus Mucilaginibacter ranged from 92.1 to 94.7 %. The closest relatives of strain TF8T were Mucilaginibacter lutimaris BR-3T (94.7 %), M. soli R9-65T (94.5 %), M. litoreus BR-18T (94.5 %), M. rigui WPCB133T (94.0 %) and M. daejeonensis Jip 10T (93.8 %). The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-7 and the major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (33.0 %), summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c; 24.8 %) and summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c; 13.0 %). The major polar lipids of TF8T were phosphatidylethanolamine and three unidentified aminophospholipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 46.2 mol%. On the basis of the data presented here, strain TF8T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter , for which the name Mucilaginibacter koreensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TF8T ( = KACC 17468T = JCM 19323T).

A slightly halophilic, Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile rod, designated TW15T, was isolated from an ark clam in South Korea. Growth occurred at 10–37 °C, with 1–5 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 7.0–10.0. Optimal growth occurred at 25–30 °C, with 2 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 8.0. Strain TW15T exhibited both oxidase and catalase activities. The major fatty acids of strain TW15T were summed feature 8 (consisting of C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c) and 11-methyl C18 : 1ω7c. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone-10 (Q-10). The polar lipids of strain TW15T comprised phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified phospholipid, an unidentified aminolipid and five unidentified lipids. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain TW15T was most closely related to Ruegeria lacuscaerulensis DSM 11314T (98.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). DNA–DNA relatedness with closely related strains was <52±3 %. The DNA G+C content was 55.7 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic data, strain TW15T represents a novel species of the genus Ruegeria , for which the name Ruegeria conchae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TW15T ( = KACC 15115T  = JCM 17315T).

A bacterium (named OT-1T) that showed algicidal activity was isolated from sea water of Masan Bay, Korea, during an outbreak of red tide. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rDNA sequences showed that the isolate formed a distinct phyletic lineage within the family Flavobacteriaceae of the Cytophaga–Flavobacterium–Bacteroides group. No species with a validly published name showed ⩾93 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to strain OT-1T. The isolate had major amounts of iso-branched and 3-hydroxy iso-branched fatty acids and menaquinone 6 and a DNA G+C content of 34 mol%; these chemotaxonomic characters also supported the placement of the organism in the family Flavobacteriaceae. The strain was Gram-negative, yellow-pigmented, non-motile, non-gliding, flexirubin-negative, strictly aerobic, catalase-negative, oxidase-positive and halophilic. Na+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions were obligately required for growth. The strain utilized various sugars as sole carbon sources and degraded gelatin, skimmed milk and starch. Several phenotypic characters can be used to differentiate the test strain from phylogenetically related marine bacterial genera. On the basis of polyphasic evidence, it is proposed that strain OT-1T should be assigned to the family Flavobacteriaceae as Kordia algicida gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain is OT-1T (=KCTC 8814PT=NBRC 1000336T).

A bacterial strain, JLT2016T, was isolated from a sample of South-eastern Pacific deep-sea water. Cells were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, devoid of flagella, motile by gliding and rod-shaped. Colonies were mucoid and cream. Growth occurred at 1.0–11.0 % (w/v) NaCl, 10–40 °C and pH 4.0–9.0. The major fatty acids were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c) (60.5 %), C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c (10.9 %) and C16 : 0 (9.0 %). The polar lipids included diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and two sphingoglycolipids. The DNA G+C content was 67.1 mol%. The closest relative of strain JLT2016T was Salipiger mucosus A3T (96.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). The results of phylogenetic analyses with different treeing algorithms indicated that this strain belonged to the Roseobacter clade in the order Rhodobacterales . Based on polyphasic analysis, strain JLT2016T is considered to represent a novel genus and species, for which the name Thiobacimonas profunda gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JLT2016T ( = LMG 27365T = CGMCC 1.12377T).

An alphaproteobacterium, strain Dia-1T, was isolated from algae-dominated biofilms on stones from the littoral zone of Lake Constance, Germany. This bacterium was isolated after initial enrichment in spent medium obtained after growth of a diatom culture. Numerous sugars and some organic acids and alcohols served as growth substrates. The bacterium grew slowly, was strictly aerobic but microaerophilic, and did not grow in cultures shaken under air. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain Dia-1T was distantly related to representatives of the genera Azospirillum (90–91 % sequence similarity), Skermanella (88–89 %), Rhodocista (87–88 %) and Dongia (88–89 % sequence similarity). Based on this sequence comparison, on phenotypic characterization including substrate utilization patterns, and comparison of cellular fatty acids, quinones, polar lipids and polyamines, this isolate was found to be substantially different from the genera mentioned above. On the basis of these results, a novel genus and species is proposed for this strain. The name Elstera litoralis gen. nov., sp. nov. is suggested, with strain Dia-1T ( = DSM 19532T = LMG 24234T) as the type strain of the type species.
