ABSTRACTWe present a simple method to generate discrete aerodynamic gust under controlled laboratory condition in the form of a vortex ring which, unlike conventional methods of perturbation, is well studied and highly controllable. We characterized the flow properties of the vortex ring using flow visualization and novel light bead method. Reynolds number of the vortex ring, based on its average propagation velocity and nozzle exit diameter, was 16000. We demonstrate this method by studying the impact of head-on gust on freely flying soldier flies, Reynolds number of which, based on its wingtip velocity and mean wing chord, was 1100. We also present simple theoretical models to characterize the vortex ring based on generating conditions. The device can also be used to generate continuous gust in any direction and can be applied, in general, to study the gust response of natural fliers and swimmers, man-made micro aerial vehicles and aquatic plant lives.

Common parameters between metallic and polymeric materials are the coefficient of restitution, the damping coefficient, and loss factor. Although the relationship between the coefficient of restitution and the loss factor is quite direct, their dependence on the damping coefficient is not so simple and mainly affected by the adopted model used to describe the material response under impact. In the present study, Kelvin–Voigt linear model and Hunt–Crossley complex model are analyzed to describe how the coefficient of restitution depends on the viscous damping coefficient of impact. The correlation between the theoretical models and the experimental data is also shown. A simple method to predict the impact damping factor of both polymeric and metallic materials from the measured temporal signal of the impact force is demonstrated.

Employers incur costs while fulfilling the requirements of employment protection legislation. The article contains a review of the core theoretical models and empirical results concerning the impact of these costs on firms’ practices in hiring, firing, training and remuneration. Overall, if wages are flexible or enforcement is weak, employment protection does not significantly influence employers’ behavior. Otherwise, stringent employment protection results in the reduction of hiring and firing rates, changes in personnel selection criteria, types of labour contracts and dismissal procedures, and, in some cases, it may lead to the growth of wages and firms’ investments to human capital.

AbstractThis study presents two-dimensional aerodynamic investigations of various high-lift configuration settings concerning the deflection angles of droop nose, spoiler and flap in the context of enhancing the high-lift performance by dynamic flap movement. The investigations highlight the impact of a periodically oscillating trailing edge flap on lift, drag and flow separation of the high-lift configuration by numerical simulations. The computations are conducted with regard to the variation of the parameters reduced frequency and the position of the rotational axis. The numerical flow simulations are conducted on a block-structured grid using Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes simulations employing the shear stress transport $$k-\omega $$ k - ω turbulence model. The feature Dynamic Mesh Motion implements the motion of the oscillating flap. Regarding low-speed wind tunnel testing for a Reynolds number of $$0.5 \times 10^{6}$$ 0.5 × 10 6 the flap movement around a dropped hinge point, which is located outside the flap, offers benefits with regard to additional lift and delayed flow separation at the flap compared to a flap movement around a hinge point, which is located at 15 % of the flap chord length. Flow separation can be suppressed beyond the maximum static flap deflection angle. By means of an oscillating flap around the dropped hinge point, it is possible to reattach a separated flow at the flap and to keep it attached further on. For a Reynolds number of $$20 \times 10^6$$ 20 × 10 6 , reflecting full scale flight conditions, additional lift is generated for both rotational axis positions.

In this work, we studied the transport properties (thermal and electrical conductivity) of smart fabric materials treated with graphite nanomaterial stacks–acetone suspensions. An innovative and easy method to produce graphite nanomaterial stacks–acetone-based formulations, starting from a low-cost expandable graphite, is proposed. An original, economical, fast, and easy method to increase the thermal and electrical conductivity of textile materials was also employed for the first time. The proposed method allows the impregnation of smart fabric materials, avoiding pre-coating of the fibers, thus reducing costs and processing time, while obtaining a great increase in the transport properties. Two kinds of textiles, cotton and Lycra®, were selected as they represent the most used natural and artificial fabrics, respectively. The impact of the dimensions of the produced graphite nanomaterial stacks–acetone-based suspensions on both the uniformity of the treatment and the transport properties of the selected textile materials was accurately evaluated using several experimental techniques. An empirical relationship between the two transport properties was also successfully identified. Finally, several theoretical models were applied to predict the transport properties of the developed smart fabric materials, evidencing a good agreement with the experimental data.

An atmospheric correction algorithm for medium-resolution satellite data over general water surfaces (open/coastal, estuarine and inland waters) has been assessed in Australian coastal waters. In situ measurements at four match-up sites were used with 21 Landsat 8 images acquired between 2014 and 2017. Three aerosol sources (AERONET, MODIS ocean aerosol and climatology) were used to test the impact of the selection of aerosol optical depth (AOD) and Ångström coefficient on the retrieved accuracy. The initial results showed that the satellite-derived water-leaving reflectance can have good agreement with the in situ measurements, provided that the sun glint is handled effectively. Although the AERONET aerosol data performed best, the contemporary satellite-derived aerosol information from MODIS or an aerosol climatology could also be as effective, and should be assessed with further in situ measurements. Two sun glint correction strategies were assessed for their ability to remove the glint bias. The most successful one used the average of two shortwave infrared (SWIR) bands to represent sun glint and subtracted it from each band. Using this sun glint correction method, the mean all-band error of the retrieved water-leaving reflectance at the Lucinda Jetty Coastal Observatory (LJCO) in north east Australia was close to 4% and unbiased over 14 acquisitions. A persistent bias in the other strategy was likely due to the sky radiance being non-uniform for the selected images. In regard to future options for an operational sun glint correction, the simple method may be sufficient for clear skies until a physically based method has been established.


The behaviour of a viscous vortex ring is examined by a matched asymptotic analysis up to three orders. This study aims at investigating how much the location of maximum vorticity deviates from the centroid of the vortex ring, defined by P. G. Saffman (1970). All the results are presented in dimensionless form, as indicated in the following context. Let Γ be the initial circulation of the vortex ring, and R denote the ring radius normalized by its initial radius R i . For the asymptotic analysis, a small parameter ∊ = ( t / Re ) ½ is introduced, where t denotes time normalized by R 2 i / Γ , and Re = Γ/v is the Reynolds number defined with Γ and the kinematic viscosity v . Our analysis shows that the trajectory of maximum vorticity moves with the velocity (normalized by Γ/R i ) U m = – 1/4π R {ln 4 R /∊ + H m } + O (∊ ln ∊), where H m = H m ( Re, t ) depends on the Reynolds number Re and may change slightly with time t for the initial motion. For the centroid of the vortex ring, we obtain the velocity U c by merely replacing H m by H c , which is a constant –0.558 for all values of the Reynolds number. Only in the limit of Re → ∞, the values of H m and H c are found to coincide with each other, while the deviation of H m from the constant H c is getting significant with decreasing the Reynolds number. Also of interest is that the radial motion is shown to exist for the trajectory of maximum vorticity at finite Reynolds numbers. Furthermore, the present analysis clarifies the earlier discrepancy between Saffman’s result and that obtained by C. Tung and L. Ting (1967).

The bulking that occurs in biological wastewater treatment plants using activated sludge is very often controlled by the injection of sodium hypochlorite into the return activated sludge (RAS) stream. In the present study undertaken at two pilot plants fed with synthetic wastewater, the impact of the pass frequency of the sludge at the chlorine dosing point on the nitrifying flora is analysed. The pass frequency is one for the pilot plant 1 and two for the pilot plant 2. A dose of chlorine of 4.85 ± 0.05 g/kg/MLVSS per day was applied at both pilots. The preservative effect on nitrifying activity of the lowest concentration of chlorine at the dosing point and therefore of the highest pass frequency was evidenced. Among other tools, a simple method of measurement of the oxygen uptake rate enabled us to monitor the effect of chlorination on nitrification before recording an increase in the ammonia concentration in the bulking.

Abstract To design X-band radar systems as well as evaluate algorithm development, it is useful to have simultaneous X-band observation with and without the impact of path attenuation. One way to develop that dataset is through theoretical models. This paper presents a methodology to generate realistic range profiles of radar variables at attenuating frequencies, such as X band, for rain medium. Fundamental microphysical properties of precipitation, namely, size and shape distribution information, are used to generate realistic profiles of X band starting with S-band observation. Conditioning the simulation from S band maintains the natural distribution of rainfall microphysical parameters. Data from the Colorado State University’s University of Chicago–Illinois State Water Survey (CHILL) radar and the National Center for Atmospheric Research S-band dual-polarization Doppler radar (S-POL) are used to simulate X-band radar variables. Three procedures to simulate the radar variables and sample applications are presented.

Small unmanned aircraft are currently limited to flight ceilings below 20,000 ft due to the lack of an appropriate propulsion system. One of the most critical technological hurdles for an increased flight ceiling of small platforms is the impact of reduced Reynolds number conditions at altitude on the performance of small radial turbomachinery. The current article investigates the influence of Reynolds number on the efficiency and pressure ratio of two small centrifugal compressor impellers using a one-dimensional meanline performance analysis code. The results show that the efficiency and pressure ratio of the 60 mm baseline compressor at the design rotational speed drops with 6–9% from sea-level to 70,000 ft. The impact on the smaller 20 mm compressor is slightly more pronounced and amounts to 6–10%. Off-design changes at low rotational speeds are significantly higher and can amount to up to 15%. Whereas existing correlations show a good match for the efficiency drop at the design rotational speed, they fail to predict efficiency changes with rotational speed. A modified version is therefore proposed.

It is shown experimentally that free shear flows can be substantially altered through direct control of the large coherent vortices present in the flow.First, flow-visualization experiments are conducted in Kalliroscope fluid at Reynolds number 550. A foil is placed in the wake of a D-section cylinder, sufficiently far behind the cylinder so that it does not interfere with the vortex formation process. The foil performs a heaving and pitching oscillation at a frequency close to the Strouhal frequency of the cylinder, while cylinder and foil also move forward at constant speed. By varying the phase of the foil oscillation, three basic interaction modes are identified. (i) Formation of a street of pairs of counter-rotating vortices, each pair consisting of one vortex from the initial street of the cylinder and one vortex shed by the foil. The width of the wake is then substantially increased. (ii) Formation of a street of vortices with reduced or even reverse circulation compared to that of oncoming cylinder vortices, through repositioning of cylinder vortices by the foil and interaction with vorticity of the opposite sign shed from the trailing edge of the foil. (iii) Formation of a street of vortices with circulation increased through merging of cylinder vortices with vortices of the same sign shed by the foil. In modes (ii) and (iii) considerable repositioning of the cylinder vortices takes place immediately behind the foil, resulting in a regular or reverse Kármán street. The formation of these three interaction patterns is achieved only for specific parametric values; for different values of the parameters no dominant stable pattern emerges.Subsequently, the experiments are repeated in a different facility at larger scale, resulting in Reynolds number 20000, in order to obtain force and torque measurements. The purpose of the second set of experiments is to assess the impact of flow control on the efficiency of the oscillating foil, and hence investigate the possibility of energy extraction. It is found that the efficiency of the foil depends strongly on the phase difference between the oscillation of the foil and the arrival of cylinder vortices. Peaks in foil efficiency are associated with the formation of a street of weakened vortices and energy extraction by the foil from the vortices of the vortex street.
