AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic has a devastating impact on the health and well-being of global population. Cough audio signals classification showed potential as a screening approach for diagnosing people, infected with COVID-19. Recent approaches need costly deep learning algorithms or sophisticated methods to extract informative features from cough audio signals. In this paper, we propose a low-cost envelope approach, called CovidEnvelope, which can classify COVID-19 positive and negative cases from raw data by avoiding above disadvantages. This automated approach can pre-process cough audio signals by filter-out back-ground noises, generate an envelope around the audio signal, and finally provide outcomes by computing area enclosed by the envelope. It has been seen that reliable datasets are also important for achieving high performance. Our approach proves that human verbal confirmation is not a reliable source of information. Finally, the approach reaches highest sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and AUC of 0.92, 0.87, 0.89, and 0.89 respectively. The automatic approach only takes 1.8 to 3.9 minutes to compute these performances. Overall, this approach is fast and sensitive to diagnose the people living with COVID-19, regardless of having COVID-19 related symptoms or not, and thus have vast applicability in human well-being by designing HCI devices incorporating this approach.

Recently, the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology offers the potential of designing high performance systems at low cost. The discrete wavelet transform has gained the reputation of being a very effective signal analysis tool for many practical applications. However, due to its computation-intensive nature, current implementation of the transform falls short of meeting real-time processing requirements of most application. The objectives of this paper are implement the Haar and Daubechies wavelets using FPGA technology. In addition, the comparison between the Haar and Daubechies wavelets is investigated. The Bit Error Rat (BER) between the input audio signal and the reconstructed output signal for each wavelet is calculated. It is seen that the BER using Daubechies wavelet techniques is less than Haar wavelet. The design procedure has been explained and designed using the stat-of-art Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools for system design on FPGA. Simulation, synthesis and implementation on the FPGA target technology has been carried out.

Abstract The main goal of the paper is to highlight the importance of supporting the promotion of the culture of excellence among people involved in a way or another in contemporary business. In order to support business excellence, the culture of excellence have to empower and engage all the people within an organization to think out of the box in a modern vision suitable to the challenging and changing times we are facing now. All over the world, in the most competitive countries, regions and sectors of activities there is a paradigmatic change of business strategies and policies oriented more and more towards performance and excellence. The paper highlights the importance of promoting the culture of excellence in the contemporary changing business environment. It suggests an important shift from a perspective that focuses on the so called ‘hero of excellence’ towards promoting the culture of excellence among the whole organization. Within modern business, in order to face challenges of the changing times and to explore their opportunities all the people from an organization are considered to manifest as ‘heroes of excellence’ by co-creating and co-working together within creative and innovative teams. They have to contribute and to participate actively to assure, preserve and develop the competitiveness and well being of the whole organization. The paper supports a holistic, cross disciplinary and integrated vision. It is structured into three parts including: a brief literature review based on an overview of the current state of the literature dedicated to the topic of culture of excellence (part 1); presentation of the main steps of the process of building a sustainable high performance organization (part 2); a brief presentation of examples of best practice and case studied identified internationally (part 3); conclusions that highlight the importance of culture of excellence in changing and challenging times.

A multi tone modulation system design and development with a low-cost and high performance was developed, taking LabVIEW as the software development platform and the computer sound card as the hardware platform. The system is capable of audio signal acquisition, multi tone modulation, demodulation, waveform and spectrum analysis, and other functions. Actual application shows that the system is not only high accuracy, and reliable, stable performance, easy to operate and extensions. The signal collection technology based on the sound card and the combination of virtual instrument has a broad application prospect in engineering survey and practical teaching.

An audio signal acquisition and analysis system with low-cost and high performance was developed, taking LabVIEW as the software development platform and the computer sound card as hardware platform. This system is capable of audio signal acquisition, real time dynamic display, analysis processing, storage and display of audio signal. Practical application shows that this system not only has those advantages such as high-precision, stability, reliable performance and being easy-operated, but also can achieve common data-acquisition within the designed frequency range of the sound card. The signal acquisition technology based on the sound card, especially the technology combining with virtual instruments has broad prospects in the field of engineering test measurement and teaching practice.
