Purpose This paper aims to propose a spreadsheet method for modeling and simulation of a retraction system mechanism for the retractable self-launching system for a high-performance glider. Design/methodology/approach More precisely, the method is based on parametric link design using Excel spreadsheets. Findings This method can be used for kinematic and dynamic analysis, graphical plotting and allows simulation of control kinematics with the ability to make quick and easy parametric changes to a design. It also has the ability to calculate the loads imposed on each component in the control system as a function of input loads and position. Practical implications This paper shows that it is possible to model complex control systems quickly and easily using spreadsheet programs already owned by most small companies. The spreadsheet model is a parametric model, and it gives a simple visual presentation of the control system with interactive movement and control by the user. Originality/value This spreadsheet model in conjunction with a simple CAD program enables the rapid and cost-effective development of control system components.

PurposeDespite of the numerous characteristics of the multirotor unmanned aircraft systems (UASs), they have been termed as less energy-efficient compared to fixed-wing and helicopter counterparts. The purpose of this paper is to explore a more efficient multirotor configuration and to provide the robust and stable control system for it.Design/methodology/approachA heterogeneous multirotor configuration is explored in this paper, which employs a large rotor at the centre to provide majority of lift and three small tilted booms rotors to provide the control. Design provides the combined characteristics of both quadcopters and helicopters in a single UAS configuration, providing endurance of helicopters keeping the manoeuvrability, simplicity and control of quadcopters. In this paper, rotational as well as translational dynamics of the multirotor are explored. Cascade control system is designed to provide an effective solution to control the attitude, altitude and position of the rotorcraft.FindingsOne of the challenging tasks towards successful flight of such a configuration is to design a stable and robust control system as it is an underactuated system possessing complex non-linearities and coupled dynamics. Cascaded proportional integral (PI) control approach has provided an efficient solution with stable control performance. A novel motor control loop is implemented to ensure enhanced disturbance rejection, which is also validated through Dryden turbulence model and 1-cosine gust model.Originality/valueRobustness and stability of the proposed control structure for such a dynamically complex UAS configuration is demonstrated with stable attitude and position performance, reference tracking and enhanced disturbance rejection.

PurposeFailte Ireland argues that high performance work practices will provide the Irish tourist industry with the necessary competitive edge. The main focus of this study is to explore the extent of these practices in the Irish hospitality industry with particular emphasis on the practices of staff empowerment and participation.Design/methodology/approachA questionnaire was chosen as the most appropriate means of obtaining information from managers because respondents could be targeted in a cost effective method. A total of 71 questionnaires were mailed to managers in all three, four and five‐star hotels in the Dublin and greater Dublin area.FindingsThe data show that Dublin‐based hotels display some of the human resource practices associated with high performing work practices. There are, however, very low levels of employee participation, which many authors argue are the cornerstone of high performance practices.Practical implicationsThe Irish hotel industry is undergoing fundamental change, not least of which is the increasingly demanding and discerning clients. Customers are demanding quality products and services, speed and reliability of service, price competitiveness and innovation. If Irish hotels are to survive and remain competitive, the issue of staff representation, participation and the channels of communication will have to be addressed. Recognising, utilizing and developing their human resources may be the most significant challenge that management faces, and it is posited that those organisations that excel at this will be the industry leaders.Originality/valueThe paper offers insights into the realities of management practices in hotels in an Irish setting.

Abstract The zinc sulfonate of EPDM, an ionic elastomer polymer, can be readily formulated into useful thermoplastic elastomer compounds having beneficial properties and processing characteristics. The thermoplastic processing characteristics of these ionic elastomers are uniquely controlled by “ionolyzers,” preferential ionic plasticizers. These additives induce thermal reversibility in the ionic crosslink and control the response of the ionic associations to temperature. Ionic elastomer compounds maintain many of the performance features characteristic of vulcanized EPDM, such as low-temperature flexibility, thermal stability, and weatherability, while providing the added advantages of heat weldability and elimination of vulcanization. We have developed a cost-effective ionic elastomer formulation that meets or exceeds the RMA recommendations for black EPDM in a demanding, high performance application, single-ply roofing membrane. High-strength lap seams can be rapidly fabricated using portable hot air welders, a technique unavailable to conventional vulcanized EPDM sheet. Other applications have been investigated for these polymers, such as hose, footwear, mechanical goods, adhesives, impact modifiers, and asphalt modifiers both as thermoplastic elastomers and as modifiers for other materials. These applications have taken advantage of the unique rheological and solubility properties of these polymers. In addition, a new polymer grade offers an advance in the ability to formulate higher strength and more highly filled and extended ionic elastomer compositions.

This passage mainly introduces about the design of liquid level and boundary measuring control at sewage re-flooding craft in small split oil field. In order to achieve automatically cutting flooding and re-flooding in the procedure in small split oil-field, the scheme is to test liquid level and boundary by using high performance to price ratio new double level gauge, to utilize electric valve instead of mechanical valve and to choose PLC to control system logic. Eventually, it will reduce the labor intensity.

For transient electromagnetic meter home-made, there are some disadvantages, for example early signal detection is difficulty, and speed and accuracy of signal acquisition is no high. Therefore a high-performance TEM based on embedded PC is designed to overcome these disadvantages. And its main part is measurement and control system, which design is mainly introduced. The system consists of a transmitter and receiver modules, which hardware block diagram and schematic design are introduced in detail. Laboratory tests for the system developed show that the electromagnetic transmitter module has advantages of short off-time and high transmitting current detection accuracy; the electromagnetic receiver has advantage of high sampling speed, big dynamic range and achieving accurate measurement of early signal. Laboratory test results are satisfactory.

Purpose To fabricate high performance parts, this paper aims to systematically study the pores characteristics and their formation mechanisms in selective laser melting (SLM) AlSi10Mg. Design/methodology/approach Cubes of 10 × 10 × 5 mm were manufactured in different laser power, scan speed and scan space. Optical microscope (OM) and scanning electron microscopes (SEM) were used to observe morphology of pores. Findings Round or irregular pores were found in SLMed AlSi10Mg parts. All the round pores have smooth inner walls and locate in the melt pool. The formation mechanisms of the round pores are contributed to the evaporation of elements in the melt pool, H2O, high laser energy input and hollow powder. Irregular pores have rough inner walls. Big scan space, unevenness of the upper surface, large layer thickness, spatter and oxide are the main reasons of generating irregular pores which outside the melt pool. Instability of keyhole leads to the irregular pores locate in the bottom of keyhole mode melt pool. Originality/value Relationship between pores and melt pool were studied systematically for the first time. Researches of pores characteristics and their formation mechanisms in SLMed AlSi10Mg would be a valuable reference for researchers to obtain an important insight into and control the defect in SLMed Al alloy.
