Leadership styles’ influence on the quality of nursing care

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate managers’ leadership styles, from the perspective of registered nurses, and its effects on the quality of nursing care in both the private and public healthcare sectors. An additional aim is to assess the relationship between leadership styles and particular organisational outcomes. Design/methodology/approach The sample for this quantitative research study was comprised of 400 respondents, among which 50 were nurse managers, 150 were staff nurses and the remaining respondents were patients. Two questionnaires were used in this study: the multi-factor leadership questionnaire (MLQ) 5X short and a patient satisfaction with nursing care quality questionnaire (PSNCQQ). Findings A positive correlation was found between the transformational leadership style with leadership outcomes and the quality of nursing care (r=0.811**, 0.759**, 0.789** and 0.877** for extra effort, job satisfaction, leader effectiveness and quality, respectively). Practical implications Although the sample study was extensive, a possible limitation is that the research utilised convenient sample who are working in the private and public healthcare sectors thus limiting the generalisability of the study. Originality/value This study was proposed as a baseline for upcoming studies in areas of education, nursing practice, research and quality. Moreover, this study was expected to be imperative to the hospital’s management, in order to improve the current level of leadership, education models and advancement programs for the healthcare sector’s senior staff.

Abstract Introduction. The aim of the surveillance over infections is to define the critical points, lacks in knowledge of staff skills, as well as lack of equipment. It is aimed at preventing the same mistakes from being conducted all over again, instead of making those guilty suffer from consequences of their mistakes. Aim. The authors aimed at assessing the quality of nursing care procedures in terms of preventing post-operative wound infections. Materials and methods. The research was conducted in medical treatment, surgical and intensive care ward. A self-constructed questionnaire “Nursing care quality and prophylaxis of hospital-acquired infections” was used for the study. It was validated using the peer judges method. Results and conclusions. The highest nursing care coefficient was noted in county hospitals ( x̅ = 94.5%), while the lowest was noted in clinical hospitals ( x̅ = 91.3%). It was concluded that there is a deficit in adherence to procedures related to post-operative wound treatment.

Abstract Background : A coronary heart disease (CHD) is one of the causes of frequent elderly hospitalizations that are associated with psychological complications such as "hospital anxiety and depression". Furthermore, there needs to be a paradigm shift beyond routine programs toward innovative approaches such as clinical governance (CG) to improve the quality of care. This study aimed to investigate the association between Nursing Care Quality integrated with CG to Hospital Anxiety and Depression among Elderly Patients. Methods : In this descriptive correlational study, 250 elderly patients with CHD admitted to a large teaching hospital in Tehran, Iran as “Aging Friendly Hospital” selected by consecutive sampling method. The data collection instruments included the Quality Patient Care Scale (QUALPAC) and The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Data were collected by face to face interviews. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics such as independent t-test, ANOVA and correlation coefficients in SPSS v.16 software . Results : Overall, 91.6 % of the subjects perceived the quality of nursing care integrated with CG desirable. The mean score of HADS in the subscales of anxiety and depression were (1.52 ± 1.14 and 2.18 ± 1.51) respectively which indicates hospital anxiety and depression were less than the average level. There was a negative significant correlation between the subjects’ hospital anxiety and quality nursing care (P< 0.01). Conclusion : The findings showed there is an association between perceived quality of nursing care and hospital anxiety among elderly patients. It is recommended that Managers of healthcare services should take into account CG seriously to paradigm shift beyond routinely care program toward innovative approaches of health policy.

Quality of service is a service that suits your needs, affordable, effective, efficient, and no risk to save on expenses. This study aimed to analyze the description of BPJS patient satisfaction with the quality of nursing service at inpatient ward of hospital in Jember. This was a cross sectional study. The subjects of this study were BPJS patients at inpatient ward at hospital in Jember. There were 120 respondents choosed by purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Patient Satisfaction with Nursing Care Quality Questionnaire (PNSCQQ). This study showed that the patient satisfaction is not optimal. Indicators of general perception of patients in each statement showed that 80 patients (63.5%) said the overall quality of health service received was good. The overall quality of nursing service was also said to be good by 80 patients (63.5%). As many as 90 patients (71.5%) agreed that they wanted to recommend one of the hospital in Jember to family and friends who needed help in terms of health service. This research showed that it is important to improve the quality of nursing service to increase patient satisfaction. Nurses need to improve nursing care. This research can be used as a reference and illustration for hospital management, and nurses are expected to implement and improve quality nursing service in order to achieve better health service so patient satisfaction will be increase.

This study was done with the purpose of clarifying the concept of patient perceived quality of nursing care in hemodialysis. In this meta-synthesis study, qualitative studies was searched in the four interntional databases from January 1st, 2000 to December 30th, 2019. The keywords used were: nursing care quality, and hemodialysis. Studies which had been done with the purpose of understanding the patient perceived quality of nursing care concept aomg hemodialysis patients were included. Two researchers were evaluate the quality of included studies separately using JBI tool, required information were extracted using the designed table. The main themes in the structure dimension include Sufficient Human resource, quality of equipment, financial support from patient and quality of the patient care environment. Process dimension consisted of continuous monitoring of the syndromes, effective patient education, efficient care, effective therapeutic relationship, and patient’s empowerment and participation in the process, and in the outcome dimension included high dialysis adequecy, patient burnout reduction, and increased patient satisfaction from services. The results of the study indicated a comprehensive, deep and interactive dimensions about the concept of nursing quality of care.

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the factors affecting the quality of nursing care as perceived by mothers of hospitalized children and provide basic data for the development of nursing care quality improvement programs.Methods: The participants consisted of 167 mothers, each of whom had a child hospitalized at a specific children's hospital. Data were collected from June 22 to August 8, 2019.Results: The factors that affected how mothers perceived the quality of nursing care were the communication ability of nurses (β=.44, p<.001) and the mother-nurse partnership (β=.33, p=.001). The total explanatory power of these factors was 54.1%.Conclusion: To improve the quality of pediatric nursing care, it is necessary to improve the communication abilities of nurses and to promote partnership between nurses and the mothers of hospitalized children.

Background: It is stated that high ethical sensitivity positively affects the quality of nursing care. However, the relationship between nursing care quality and ethical sensitivity has not been clearly demonstrated in researches. Aim: This study was carried out to determine the relationship between surgical nurses’ care behaviors and their ethical sensitivity. Method: The sample of this cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational study consists of 308 nurses who worked at the surgical departments in four Turkish hospitals. The data were collected using the “Nurse Description Form” developed by the researcher, “Caring Behaviours Inventory-24” and “Ethical Sensitivity Questionnaire.” Data were evaluated by the Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis one-way analysis of variance and Spearman correlation analysis. Ethical considerations: The study was approved by the ethics committee. Verbal and written consent was received from the nurses. Results: It was found in the study that nurses’ Caring Behaviours Inventory-24 total score median was 5.25 (4.83–5.58), nurses’ perception level of caring quality was high, median of Ethical Sensitivity Questionnaire total score was 89.00 (75.00–101.00) and nurses’ ethical sensitivity was moderate. A negative significant relation was found between nurses’ Caring Behaviours Inventory-24 total score and Ethical Sensitivity Questionnaire total score (r = -0.162; p = 0.009). A negative relation was also detected between nurses’ working period at the current clinic and providing benefit (r = -0.147; p = 0.012), holistic approach (r = -0.139; p = 0.018) and orientation (r = -0.175; p = 0.003) scores of Ethical Sensitivity Questionnaire sub-scales. Conclusion: Nurses’ perception levels of caring quality were high and their ethical sensitivity levels were moderate. It was found out that nurses’ ethical sensitivity increased together with their perception of caring quality, and as their working period at the current clinic increased, the ethical sensitivity also increased in terms of the sub-scales of providing benefit, holistic approach, and orientation. The factors that adversely affect the quality of nursing care and ethical sensitivity should be examined and attempts should be made to improve the working environment.

Background: Patients’ handover with SBAR method is one of the indicators in the patient safety target, yet at Dirgahayu Hospital data shows that to achieve effective communication: SBAR in the medical surgery ward for the January to September 2018 period is only 80% - 90% and there are some incident findings including KTD 8 events, KNC 3 events, KPC 3 events. Objective: To find out the Effectiveness of Handover with SBAR Method to the Nursing Care Quality. Method: This study used a descriptive analytic design with cross sectional approach, which was conducted in December 2018 and the number of samples was 92 people selected by using the proportionate random sampling technique. Variable measurements were performed using questionnaires and observation sheets. Results: the effectiveness of handover with SBAR method to the quality of nursing care at Dirgahayu Samarinda Hospital is at ρ-value = 0.001. Conclusion: Patients’ handover with SBAR method greatly influences the safety of patients in hospitals, so that it can improve the quality of nursing care.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to explore the moderating effects of gender and income on the relationship between leadership style and quality of work life (QWL). This study provides meaningful implications for the hospitality industry in terms of gender and income between leadership and QWL. Design/methodology/approach Data are collected from five-star hotel employees (n = 443) in Turkey. The hypotheses are tested using hierarchical linear regression. The independent and dependent variables used to test the hypotheses involving the dependent variable of QWL are centered prior to the empirical analysis to avoid potential multicollinearity. Findings Transformational and transactional leadership styles were significant predictors of QWL, controlling for the demographic variables (i.e. age, employment statistics and education level), but gender and income were not significant antecedents of QWL. When it comes to the interaction effect of leadership styles and gender, gender showed a statistically significant moderating effect between transformational leadership and QWL, but not between transactional leadership and QWL. Income had a statistically significant moderating effect between both leadership styles and QWL. Practical implications The findings of the study potentially affect hotel management by identifying the moderating effect of gender and income of the employees and demonstrating how quality of life of the employees can be improved by leadership styles of managers. Originality/value Previous literature has addressed the issue of leadership and its outcomes. However, there has been limited research on examining the relationship among gender, income, leadership style and QWL in the case of hospitality management.

Objective: adapt and validate the instrument Children Care Quality at Hospital (CCQH) to assess the quality of nursing care of hospitalized children for the Portuguese language of Portugal. Materials and Methods: content, language, and conceptual validity methodological study, with translation, feedback, and reflection. A non-probabilistic simple was used of 252 children between 7 and 11 years of age, hospitalized due to acute disease in nine services of six Portuguese hospitals. The reliability and validity of the results were determined to measure the psychometric properties of the instrument. Construct validity was calculated through exploratory factor analysis of main components with Varimax rotation and the internal consistency by determining the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Results: the internal consistency has adequate psychometric characteristics suitable for the Portuguese population (Cronbach’s alpha values between 0.66 and 0.82). The instrument maintained 49 items grouped into three categories: characteristics, activities, and environment. The psychometric characteristics of the CCQH, adapted and validated for Portuguese, guarantees its reliability and validity to measure satisfaction with the quality of nursing care from the perspective of school-aged children. Conclusions: the instrument could be used to assess children’s satisfaction with the quality of nursing care during their hospitalization.

ObjectiveThe effect of nursing management styles on patient outcomes and the quality of nursing care (QNC) has recently become a topic of discussion. This review was conducted to examine the effects of leadership styles or behaviors on QNC and on patient outcomes.Methods13 research studies published between 1 January 2010 and 31 May 2016 which conformed to the inclusion criteria were reviewed.ResultsThe effects of nursing leaders' leadership styles or behaviors were examined in studies on patient mortality, QNC from the perspective of nurses, patient satisfaction, unwanted/adverse events, health-care-associated infections, pressure ulcers, falls, unwanted weight loss, hospital readmissions, mismanagement of feeding tubes, and inadequacies in daily nursing care.ConclusionsRelationship-focused leadership behaviors directly or indirectly improved patient outcomes and raised the QNC compared with task-focused leadership behaviors.
