A survey on national culture and corporate financial decisions: current status and future research

PurposeThe extant literature provides substantial evidence that various facets of national culture play a significant role in corporate financial decision making. We systematically review the role of national culture on the various thematic domains of corporate financial decision making to outline what have been studies thus far and what needs to be studied.Design/methodology/approachKeywords such as national culture, organizational culture, power distance, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity, risk aversion and individualism for a search in the prominent academic literature databases are used. The studies related to the corporate financial decision making that is tied with these keywords are identified and selected for the systematic review.FindingsThe review of extant literature suggests strong evidence that national culture has a significant role in influencing corporate cash holding, corporate risk-taking, individual behaviour of the financial managers and initial public offering by the corporations. The review also indicates, although extant studies have examined the role of national culture in the key corporate financial decisions, evidence on the role of national culture in the firm's investment efficiency aspects is rather scarce. Also, what explains the role of national culture in corporate financial decision making has not been empirically exploited through causal mechanisms.Practical implicationsThe findings of the studies help advance our understanding of the current research status concerning the role played by the national culture in shaping corporate financial decisions and raise important future calls.Originality/valueTo best of our knowledge, no prior study has systematically reviewed the role of national culture in the thematic domains of corporate financial decision making.

As an individual investor, it is incredible to have a successful performance return without financial knowledge. An organization's performance must be measured and analysed based on an adequate financial management system. In today's multifaceted financial scenery Financial Literacy is crucial as it does not only impact financial decisions at the business level but is also important for the country's development. Financial literacy has the importance of the backbone of society. The study adds a new mechanism of financial literacy. The main objective of this study is to determine further insight into the role of financial literacy on an individual's behaviour and attitude towards financial decision making. For analysis, the moderator impact of financial literacy on decision-making data of 100 individual investors has been collected from different banking sectors of Pakistan. The result of this study shows that financial literacy has a significant impact on financial decision making. This study delivers knowledge that can contribute to guiding coming studies, making policies, directors and instructors in their teaching.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the status, trends and potential future research areas in the field of financial decision-making process in family firms. Design/methodology/approach The bibliometric indicators and methods are applied in order to describe the publication activity and to analyze the contents of the articles. The material examined are the journals included in the SCOPUS, SAGE and EBSCO database and the peer-reviewed article, which contain in their titles, keywords or abstracts with a combination of phrases “family firms,” “family business” or “family enterprise” with “financial decision” or one of the subcategories: capital structure, investment decision, capital budgeting, working capital management or dividend policy. The study covers the period from 2000 to 2016. Findings Although the interest in family business research is growing rapidly, the area of financial decision making is underestimated. Despite of the fact that the vast majority of the studies into financial decisions in family firms is are focused on the capital structure, they do not give clear answers to the question of how the family businesses behave in this scope and what their true financial logic is. Additionally, the area of the investment decisions and dividend policy is rather not better left uncovered. Research limitations/implications The analyses enable the identification of potential avenues for future research which could be vital to make an advancement in the consolidation of the discipline. Practical implications The analyses ought to have a potential meaning mainly for external institutions (especially financial institutions) in better understanding of the family businesses and their point of view. Originality/value This paper fulfills the need of a comprehensive review of financial decision making process in family firms. It provides a literature review and bibliography for the period between 2000 and 2016 for the use of both academicians and practitioners.

PurposeThis meta-analysis reviews and summarizes the results of 34 studies to investigate the relationship between overconfidence and financial decision-making.Design/methodology/approachA correlation meta-analysis was conducted with three moderators of the relationship between overconfidence and financial decision-making examined: the type of overconfidence construct, the type of overconfidence measuring method and the type of financial decision-making.FindingsIt was found that the effect of overconfidence on financial decision-making was significant, but the magnitude of this effect was low. Additionally, indirect measures of overconfidence showed to have stronger effect than direct measures, and the overconfidence was mostly related to investment, followed by trading and innovativeness.Originality/valueThis was the first attempt to meta-analytically integrate results concerning the relationship between overconfidence and financial decision-making. Although overconfidence is described as a keystone for understanding financial decision-making, it was shown that it has rather limited effect on individuals' financial decisions. The findings suggest that indirect measures increase the overall effect and may cause the overvaluation of overconfidence in literature. The results call for more rigorous and consistent conceptualization of overconfidence in behavioral research.

PurposeWomen empowerment becomes an important policy discussion in development economics and modernization theory. The empowerment of women can lead to an increase in the quality viz-a-viz the capacity of human resources accessible for economic development. The purpose of this study is to evidence the impact of social and economic dimensions on women empowerment through financial inclusion in rural India.Design/methodology/approachTo reveal the research objective, the study has utilized a primary survey of women respondents from the Gujarat state of India by a simple random sampling method and applied a logistic regression approach to identify the relationship between the need of a bank account (determinant of financial inclusion) as a dependent variable and social and economic dimensions of women empowerment such as earning status, participation in financial decision-making, recipient of social welfare schemes and perception towards the safety of saving as independent variables.FindingsThe results of this study show that earning status, participation in financial decision-making at household level and recipient of social welfare schemes by women have a significant impact on women empowerment through financial inclusion; however, safety of their savings is observed as an insignificant variable, yet the odd value is very high (2.437) in the present study.Originality/valueThe present study is the first of its kind to examine the social and economic status of women and its impact on their requirement of a formal bank account for the overall empowerment of women in rural India.

The study aimed to know the effects of analysis of financial statements on financial decisions, and the degree of benefit from them, and to identify what financial statements, what is its importance for the institutions within the framework of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 of ideas and trends, and to identify the contribution of financial statement analysis to financial decision-making. The study was based on the descriptive and analytical approach, and the study population consisted of all financial decision makers. The study was based on a simple random method (70) of financial decision makers. The study was based on the questionnaire and consisted of the following axes (financial statements in companies, financial decision-making, the effects of analysis of financial statements on financial decision-making). The study came out with a number of results, the most important of which are: There is approval by the respondents to all paragraphs of the first axis "financial statements in companies", with a relative weight of 82.8%. There is an agreement by the respondents on all paragraphs of the second axis "making financial decisions in companies", with a relative weight of 81.3%. There is strong approval by the respondents on all paragraphs of the third axis "the effects of analysis of financial statements on financial decision-making", with a relative weight of 86.4%. The financial statements are a key tool to know the financial position of the company, so they must be accurate and reliable before being published by management. The lack of credibility in the financial statements leads to mistrust in the company by investors, and does not give them the possibility to diagnose and make sound decisions. In light of the previous results, the study recommended the following: • Organizing several forums, conferences and forums to clarify the mechanism of preparing the financial statements and how to analyze them, and the need to raise awareness of financial decision makers about the importance of financial statements in the financial decision-making process.

This paper examines the gender differences in financial decision-making of university students who are young, single, childless individuals that have at least average financial literacy and very small or no income. This paper is based on the survey questionnaires developed by Grable and Lytton (2003), distributed and collected from 100 students (50 men and 50 women) by using convenience sampling technique. The study finds that men and women differ in their financial decision. Women are less risk taker than men in financial decision-making; it indicates that women prefer to safer investment.

Abstract Financial decision making self-efficacy (FDMSE) is a novel construct that may influence how older adults make financial decisions. Our previous research with a community sample of older adults demonstrated that cognitive functioning and suspected history of financial exploitation were both associated with low FDMSE. We sought to replicate these findings in two clinical samples of older adults: people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or probable Alzheimer’s disease (PAD) and current victims of scams or exploitation as determined by a financial coach. Samples were obtained from the Michigan Alzheimer’s Disease Center and a financial coaching intervention study. All participants completed a 4-item FDMSE measure. One-way ANOVAs, t-tests and chi-square tests were conducted to test for group differences with controls on demographics. There was a main effect of cognitive status on FDMSE, F(2,138) = 8.10, p < .001, which was driven by higher FDMSE in the healthy group (N = 63) than the MCI (N = 76) or PAD (N = 28) groups. Similarly, scam victims (N = 25) had significantly lower FDMSE than non-exploited (N = 25) peers, t(48)=2.33, p < 05. Cognitive impairment and current financial scams are both associated with low FDMSE levels. Low FDMSE may exacerbate cognitive and psychosocial vulnerabilities that contribute to risk for poor financial decisions among older adults. Future interventions to enhance FDMSE may help older adults make better decisions despite changes in thinking abilities or previous negative financial experiences.
