Comparison of flexural capacity of different hollow slab beams with/without pavement layer reinforced by steel plates

PurposeReinforcement of reinforced concrete (RC) beams in-service have always been an important research field, anchoring steel plate in the bottom of the beams is a kind of common reinforcement methods. In actual engineering, the contribution of pavement layer to the bearing capacity of RC beams is often ignored, which underestimates the bearing capacity and stiffness of RC beams to a certain extent. The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of pavement layer on the RC beams before and after reinforcement.Design/methodology/approachFirst, static load experiments are carried out on three in-service RC hollow slab beams, meanwhile, nonlinear finite element models are built to study the bearing capacity of them. The nonlinear material and shear slip effect of studs are considered in the models. Second, the finite element models are verified, and the numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results. Last, the finite element models are adopted to carry out the research on the influence of different steel plate thicknesses on the flexural bearing capacity and ductility.FindingsThe experimental results showed that pavement layers increase the flexural capacity of hollow slab beams by 16.7%, and contribute to increasing stiffness. Ductility ratio of SPRCB3 and PRCB2 was 30% and 24% lower than that of RCB1, respectively. The results showed that when the steel plate thickness was 1 mm–6 mm, the bearing capacity of the hollow slab beam increased gradually from 2158.0 kN.m to 2656.6 kN.m. As the steel plate thickness continuously increased to 8 mm, the ultimate bearing capacity increased to 2681.0 kN.m. The increased thickness did not cause difference to the bearing capacity, because of concrete crushing at the upper edge.Originality/valueIn this paper, based on the experimental study, the bearing capacity of hollow beam strengthened by steel plate with different thickness is extrapolated by finite element simulation, and its influence on ductility is discussed. This method not only guarantees the accuracy of the bearing capacity evaluation, but also does not require a large number of samples, and has certain economy. The research results provide a basis for the reinforcement design of similar bridges.

But when the steel plate thickness reaches a certain level, bearing capacity is no longer influenced. The displacement ductility coefficient decreases with the increase of steel plate thickness.Originality/valueBased on experimental study, this paper makes an extrapolation analysis of the bearing capacity of hollow slab beams reinforced with steel plates of different thicknesses through finite element simulation and discusses the influence on ductility. This method not only ensures the accuracy of bearing capacity evaluation but also does not need many samples, which is economical to a certain extent. The research results provide a basis for the reinforcement design of similar bridges.

The objective of the present study is to investigate the possibility to recover the ultimate strength of a rectangular steel plate with a manhole shape opening subjected to a uniaxial compressive load and non-uniform corrosion degradation reinforced by additional stiffeners. Finite element analyses have been carried out to verify the possible design solutions. A total of four finite element models are generated, including 63 sub-structured models. The non-uniform corrosion has been generated by the Monte Carlo simulation. The reinforcement process covers three scenarios that include mounting of two longitudinal stiffeners, two longitudinal and two transverse stiffeners and the flange on the opening. The positioning of the stiffeners has also been studied. A total of 10 cases has been selected and tested for the numerical experiment. Three different assessments have been performed to evaluate the ultimate strength, weight and cost. Two additional studies on the effect of the plate thickness and slenderness have been also carried out.

In order to study the flexural capacity of the seismic damaged RC beams after reinforcement, the bearing capacity and ductility are comprehensively evaluated, which is based on the results of three points of division loading test on 8 models which are divided into 4 groups. Experimental results show that compared with the direct pasting CFRP, the ultimate bearing capacity of RC beam strengthened by composite CFRP sheets is much higher, the average is 20.7%. Cracking load and ductility are also improved higher. The reinforcement effect of CFRP sheets is used very well. The research results provide advice and reference for the next seismic damaged RC beams in the reinforcement engineering.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the results of experimental and theoretical studies on the flexural capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened using externally bonded bi-directional glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites and different end anchorage systems. Design/methodology/approach A series of nine RC beams with a length of 1,600 mm and a cross-section of 200 mm depth and 100 mm width were prepared and externally strengthened in flexure with bi-directional GFRP composites. These strengthened beams were anchored with three different end anchorage systems namely closed GFRP wraps, GFRP U-wraps and mechanical anchors. All these beams were tested with four-point bending system up to failure. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical results obtained using the relevant design guidelines. Findings The experimental results demonstrate a significant increase in the flexural performance of the GFRP strengthened beams with regard to the ultimate load carrying capacity and stiffness. The results also show that GFRP strengthened beams without end anchorages experienced intermediate concrete debonding failure at the GFRP plate end, whereas all the GFRP strengthened beams with different end anchorage systems failed in rupture of GFRP with concrete crushing. The theoretical results revealed no significant difference among the relevant design guidelines with regard to the predicted ultimate moment capacities of the bi-directional GFRP strengthened RC beams. However, the results show that ACI Committee 440 Report (2008) design recommendation provides reasonably acceptable predictions for the ultimate moment capacities of the tested beams strengthened externally with bi-directional GFRP reinforcement followed by FIB Bulletin 14 (2001) and eventually by JSCE (1997). Originality/value The research work presented in this manuscript is authentic and could contribute to the understanding of the overall behaviour of RC beams strengthened with FRP and different end anchorage systems under flexural loading.

Purpose This paper aims to present nonlinear numerical simulations using the versatile finite element (FE) analysis tool ANSYS and theoretical analysis based on code provisions to assess the load-carrying capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) beams under two-point monotonic static loadings. Design/methodology/approach Four quarter-size FE models with load and geometry symmetry conditions were constructed, the load-bearing capacity and associated mid-span deflections at critical points are verified against the full-scale experimental RC beams available in the literature. These developed FE models incorporated the tension stiffening effects and bond–slip behaviour. Theoretical analyses based on Indian standard code IS: 456–2000 and ACI 318–19 were also carried to verify the experimental and numerical predicted moments at critical loading points. Findings The load-deflection curves predicted through FE models exhibit closer corroboration with the experimental curves throughout the loading history. The contour plots for deflections, concrete principal stresses, reinforcement yield stresses are satisfactorily predicted by the FE models, which reveal the complete information of nonlinear behaviour of RC beams. The developed model well captured the initial and progressive crack patterns at each load increments. Practical implications The FE modelling is an efficient, valid and economical tool that is an alternative to the expensive experimental program and can be used to explore, analyse and fully understand the nonlinear response of RC beams under static loadings. Originality/value The ultimate moment capacity evaluated based on ACI 318–19 code provision show a better correlation with the experimental data as compared to the IS: 456–2000 code provision. The ultimate loads and associated centre-span deflections predicted by RN-2, RN-3, RB-12 and RB-16 FE model show a discrepancy of 1.66 and –0.49%, –4.68 and –0.60%, –9.38 and –14.53% and –4.37 and 4.21%, respectively, against the experimental results, which reveals that the developed ANSYS FE models predict consistent results and achieved a reasonable agreement with the experimental data.

Purpose During severe earthquakes, the inelastic energy dissipation of eccentrically braced frame system depends on shear links performance. A finite element model can predict links behavior appropriately if the factors causing large discrepancies are recognized and modified. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach In order to achieve this, the present paper discusses the cyclic response of five types of shear links constructed of various steel grades that ranged from 100 to 485 MPa yield strength. Finite element models are verified by experimental results. As these links have substantial differences in strain hardening of steel materials, different amplitudes of material stress‒strain curve loops are used to specify the level of strain hardening in finite element models. Findings The solid and shell elements in ABAQUS element factory can predict local buckling perfectly, and the computation cost of the former is significantly more than the latter. However, one of the solid elements can predict plastic deformation accurately if no local buckling emerges. The axial constraint of test setup equipment can cause excessive plastic deformation in comparison to the link plastic rotation capacity. Furthermore, some shear links with middle stiffeners can reach inaccurate high plastic rotations due to lack of defining fracture criteria in finite element models. Originality/value In this study, some resources of discrepancies between experimental results and finite element models are mentioned to ensure the reliable use of finite element models.

Nonlinear numerical analysis for the force performance of frame middle joint is processed in this paper with the finite element software of ABAQUS. Compared with experimental results, numerical analysis results are found to be reasonable. Then the influence of factors such as shaped steel ratio and axial-load ratio are contrastively analyzed. The results show that shaped steel ratio has a greater influence on the bearing capacity and hysteretic performance of the structure, but the axial-load ratio has less influence.

Purpose The resistance of steel plate shear walls (SPSW) under explosive loads is evaluated using nonlinear FE analysis and surrogate methods. This study uses the conventional weapons effect program (CONWEP) model for the explosive load and the Johnson-Cook model for the steel plate. Based on the Taguchi method, 25 samples out of 100 samples are selected for a parametric study where we predict the damaged zones and the maximum deflection of SPSWs under explosive loads. Then, this study uses a multiple linear regression (MLR), multiple Ln equation regression (MLnER), gene expression programming (GEP), adaptive network-based fuzzy inference (ANFIS) and an ensemble model to predict the maximum detection of SPSWs. Several statistical parameters and error terms are used to evaluate the accuracy of the different surrogate models. The results show that the cross-section in the y-direction and the plate thickness have the most significant effects on the maximum deflection of SPSWs. The results also show that the maximum deflection is related to the scaled distance, i.e. for a value of 0.383. The ensemble model performs better than all other models for predicting the maximum deflection of SPSWs under explosive loads. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the determination of critical stress intensity factor (KC) both by experimental method and three-dimensional (3D) finite element simulations. Design/methodology/approach CT specimens of different compositions of Al6061-TiC composites (3wt%, 5wt% and 7wt% TiC) with variable crack length to width (a/W=0.3-0.6) ratios are machined from as-cast composite block. After fatigue pre-cracking the specimens to a required crack length, experimental load vs crack mouth opening displacement data are plotted to calculate the KC value. Elastic 3D finite element simulations have been conducted for CT specimens of various compositions and a/W ratios to compute KC. The experimental results indicate that the magnitude of KC depends on a/W ratios, and significantly decreases with increase in a/W ratios of the specimen. Findings From 3D finite element simulation, the KC results at the centre of CT specimens for various Al6061-TiC composites and a/W ratios show satisfactory agreement with experimental results compared to the surface.
