Worldwide, an increasing number of cities and regions are confronted with conflict and tension. These conflicts have an impact on shaping and planning the built-environment, as well as the future development of the area. This article focuses on Gaza City and its development process throughout its political conflicts, with an emphasis on the last two decades (2000-2018). The main objective is to comprehend the urban development in the case of conflict through analyzing the development of Gaza City, as well as questioning the determinants of urban development. This information is obtained through aerial maps, thermal maps and GIS map analysis. The findings reveal a general shortage of housing units and lack of safe housing locations, as most areas in Gaza City are under threat of war, as well as high prices of land due to the unavailability of unconstructed lands and high costs of construction materials. This study argues that urban development in Gaza City was not led by planning through local authorities, rather it was shaped by conflict. This article concludes with recommendations that could be beneficial in developing lasting solutions to urban development in Gaza City

Like in many other provinces, during the Habsburg period, the main point of orientation for Galicia was Vienna. This also applies to architecture and urban development. Galicia’s technical elite applied the theoretical and practical experience it gathered in Vienna to the towns and cities of this northeastern Crown land. Ignacy Drexler, born in 1878 in the Austro-Hungarian Lemberg, was a representative of a new generation of engineers and architects who did not necessarily have to spend time in the imperial capital to earn their spurs. Increasingly, besides the more or less obligatory stay in Vienna, other European countries became points of reference. Drexler did not live to see the realization of important aspects of his comprehensive plan for the city, but his ideas and the data he compiled were indispensable for the future development of his hometown. They shape urban planning in Lviv to this day.

Vibratory bowl feeders (VBF) are the most frequently used systems for automated sorting and feeding of bulk material. To improve the current manual development process, methods for simulation of VBF are researched. The presented paper introduces a physics simulation based sensitivity analysis of the behavior of transported parts related to the topology of the VBF. These results provide a basis for the future development of an algorithm for the automated generation of orienting devices.

Crowdsourcing is an important form for enterprises to realize open innovation, which can gather the wisdom of the public and gather talents from various fields to participate in technological innovation and value creation. This paper systematically reviews the emergence and development of crowdsourcing in China, analyzes the causes and characteristics of the four stages of crowdsourcing development with the clue of major events in the development process of crowdsourcing; takes the operation process of crowdsourcing as the breakthrough point, discusses the bidirectional driving optimization path for the benign rolling development of crowdsourcing mode under the background of “mass entrepreneurship and innovation”; and prospects. Finally, the future development direction of crowdsourcing mode is pointed out.

Activity in the mining industry is based on the profitability principle similar to other business sectors. In the case of stone pits, gravel and sand quarries, it presents a very complex task, mainly due to the fact that the economy of localities is influenced greatly by natural conditions, which cannot be changed. The presented contribution deals with the problem of how mining companies, realizing the surface extraction of construction materials, could be profitable in the future. The main research method of this contribution presents regression and correlation analyses with the goal of determining parameters with a decisive influence on the future economic development of the locality. A complex system of stone pit, gravel and sand quarries demanded discriminant analysis to evaluate individual localities with the goal of dividing them into profitable and not profitable localities. The results of the contribution divide localities of quarry mining among profitable or not profitable, serving for predicting the future development of the company, based on discriminant analysis. The results of maximally possible measures respect assumptions, enabling the correct application of such multivariate statistical methods. A further orientation of the research in an area of model creation for predicting the future development of the company is possible in the application of logistic regression and neuron nets.

Looking back over the steps undertaken before the Ghana Library Services were established, it seems very important that so much preliminary work was embarked on. First a country-wide survey was made, and a detailed plan worked out of the future development, taking into account the educational system, the general standard of literacy and the rate of its increase, the languages in common use, population distribution, the transport and communication systems, the demand - as opposed to the need - for books, the pattern of local authorities and their view on the principles of library provision and - very importantly - who would ultimately be responsible for the financial needs of the library system, the purpose of the library provision and what it hoped to achieve, the resources needed for the Services and draft estimates for the first five years.

Developments of products and technologies always follow certain objective law and the same objective law can be applied in different technical fields. the innovation processes of any products follow a law, the development of all technical innovation is toward maximum function. By applying some technical evolution paths, this paper analyses the technical development process of Converter Tilting Machines and forecasts the future development. The evolutionary paths of converter tilting mechanism has been analyzed by using TRIZ Theory, and, the development of Converter Tilting Machine has been forecasted. According to the path toward flexibility, we can forecast that Converter Tilting Machine can be driven by Filed force.

While traditional forms of urban planning are oriented towards the future, the recent turn towards experimental and challenge-led urban developments is characterized by an overarching presentism. We explore in this article how an experimental approach to urban planning can consider the long-term through setting-up ‘conversations with a future situation.’ In doing so, we draw on a unique experiment: Råängen, a piece of farmland in Lund (Sweden) owned by the Cathedral. The plot is part of Brunnshög, a large urban development program envisioned to accommodate homes, workspaces, and world-class research centers in the coming decades. We trace how Lund Cathedral became an unusual developer involved in ‘planning for thousand years,’ deployed a set of art commissions to allow reflections about values, belief, time, faith, and became committed to play a central role in the development process. The art interventions staged conversations with involved actors as well as publics geographically and temporally far away. The Råängen case illustrates how long-term futures can be fruitfully brought to the present through multiple means of imagination. A key insight for urban planning is how techniques of financial discounting and municipal zoning plans could be complemented with trust in reflective conversations in which questions are prioritized over answers.

The advancement in Information and Communication Technology (!CT), particularly in relation to Geographical Information System (GIS), Computer Aided Design (CAD), Database Management System (DBMS), and Facility Management System (FMS), has provided the opportunity for urban government to adopt innovative and effective technologies to aid and improve the management and decision-making in urban development process. Among the obstacles that hamper effective management and decision-making in urban development process are the absence of integration between the works of the professionals involve in such process and the unavailability of immediate and reliable data to form the basis for sound decision-making. Thus, this paper proposes that a city-wide spatial information system to be developed comprising two major elements: a common platform for integrating the works of the various built environment professionals and a city-wide built environment database. While the common platform will help to streamline the works of the professionals, the database will assists urban government in making sound and informed decision in relation to planning, management, maintenance, and monitoring of the urban built environment. This paper highlights the efforts of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in developing its spatial information system. The system is designed to provide information on the IIUM property that covers buildings, infrastructure, facilities, and space to decision makers and managers to help them in making sound decision and in implementing effective property management scheme.
