Purpose This paper aims to analyze the modern problems and the main trends of development of the health-improving tourism sector in the southern part of Russia and to identify significant factors in overcoming the complex challenges related to specific socio-economic conditions in the study area. Design/methodology/approach The material that served as the basis of the study comprises statistical data from the Southern Federal District and its subjects, as well as data about the development of tourism infrastructure on the official websites of governments, Ministry of Tourism and the population of the Southern Federal District. This information was systematized from a number of perspectives, including identification of the chronology of health-improving tourism infrastructure development in the chosen territory, as well as the advantages and disadvantages in this area. Based on the results of the study, the authors also developed some recommendations to overcome existing inactive trends in the field of health tourism. Findings This paper sheds light on the understanding of the challenges and changes that took place in the resort agglomerations of the south of Russia in terms of current issues and those that must be addressed in the coming years. It was concluded that health tourism in the south of Russia has old traditions based on the natural resource potential of territories that are included in the composition of the Southern Federal District. At the same time, the authors came to the conclusion that, unfortunately, not resort agglomerations are fully utilized. Furthermore, some historic resorts were not well maintained by local authorities and have suffered more recently because of lack of investment. At present, the financial results of health resorts and others related to health-improving tourism are precarious as most operations are unprofitable, and so complex decisions are needed to address the underlying problem of resource optimization because of the important social and economic role of the cities in this region. They have special natural and resource potential and preserve traditions related to health-improving tourism. Research limitations/implications The paper provides a conceptual analysis based on limited empirical data combined with some directions for further research. Originality/value The paper attempts to reveal the impact of social, economic and geopolitical factors, both negative and positive, on the development of the health-improving tourism segment, restructuring of the Russian tourism market and the emergence of promising opportunities and new directions for development. The findings also provide insights for practitioners and researchers, and the tourism industry can draw on this analysis to guide the development of strategy, increase investment attractiveness, make more effective use of the natural resource potential and maintain pressure on government partners to provide support to tourism.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to contribute the advancement of knowledge on food heritage and indigenous entrepreneurship in a non-Western country, specifically in the Persian gardens as the touristic destination for increasing the tourism and food businesses in Iran.Design/methodology/approachThe methodological approach adopted is based on qualitative and quantitative approaches to compare two representative gardens named as Bagh-Chehel-Sotoun and Bagh-Fin, as famous examples of a Persian garden in Iran. The methods supported the research to explain the lack of strategies for improving virtuous cycles in Persian gardens despite their potentials as the main places to attract many tourists.FindingsRegarding local food and the quality of servicing, most of the visitors and tourists (85–90%) had interest to test local and traditional foods around both gardens, but they had no sufficient awareness of Iranian traditional foods. According to the tourists’ interests, the authors concluded the lack of servicing and facilities to present and introduce local and traditional food for tourists.Research limitations/implicationsDespite the limitation of local food services and lack of awareness of tourists about local foods, the implication of the study offers possible avenues to promote local food business.Practical implicationsThe results could be useful for cultural heritage and tourism organizations and for investors in the economic sector due to more exploitation of the tourism industry.Originality/valueThe paper is the first work evaluating the Persian garden with a new perspective of local foods in Iran.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to determine the volume and quality of food waste in Finnish households and discuss drivers for waste being produced. Design/methodology/approach – In total, 380 households weighed all solid food waste and liquid milk waste daily each time they disposed food during a two-week period. The authors concentrated only on avoidable food waste, i.e. all wasted food and raw material that could have been consumed, had they been stored or prepared differently. Other biowaste, such as vegetable peelings, coffee grounds, or bones, was not measured. Findings – The amount of food waste in households ranged from 0 to 160 kg/year. The average annual food waste was 23 kg per capita, 63 kg per household, and in total about 120 million kg/year. When comparing purchased food amount with avoidable food waste, the average waste was about 4-5 per cent. The main discarded foodstuffs were vegetables, home-cooked food and milk products. The principal reasons for disposing of foodstuffs were spoilage: e.g. mould, expiry of best before or use by date, plate leftovers, and preparing more food than needed. When examining waste per person, singles generally produced most waste. Practical implications – Knowledge about food waste will help development of new practices to decrease waste. Originality/value – The study estimated amounts of food waste in households using diaries and weighing. Such studies have often been based on statistics or interviews rather than exact weighing of waste.

Purpose Hostels’ competitiveness relies heavily on unique and genuine service and, thus, counts on employees actively creating a social, welcoming environment and, at the same time, caring about – and being loyal to – their hostel. This paper aims to investigate whether retaining employees who care about their hostel and refrain from destructive behaviours implies that these workers need to have a better quality of working life, as well as whether work engagement mediates this relationship. Design/methodology/approach A survey was conducted with 98 employees from 40 hostels in Lisbon. An analysis of the survey data was performed to test the research hypotheses. The model was estimated by means of partial least squares structural equation modelling. Findings The results reveal that quality of working life has a strong negative impact on employees’ exit behaviours and a positive effect on their loyalty. In addition, work engagement was found to mediate fully the relationship between quality of working life and both employee voice and neglect, as well as partially mediating exit intentions. Originality/value This study extended prior research in two ways. First, most theoretical and empirical studies in the hospitality and tourism industry have focused on hotels, so this research targeted a new context (i.e. hostels). Second, this study offers a clear indication of the relationship between employees’ quality of working life, work engagement and behaviours, thus offering valuable insights for management and hostel staff.

With 450 questionnaires, the authors used SPSS software to analyze and found that the researched factors all had a positive impact on the development of community tourism services in Ha Giang province. In particular, the degree of influence on the development of CBT services in Ha Giang province in the order of importance is as follows: The level of organization and management of the tourism industry (QL), The participation of the community in the development of community tourism (TG), Tourism Resources (TN), Infrastructure Development (HT), Human Resource Training Development (NL). This result is the basis for us to choose appropriate solutions to improve the quality of community tourism services in Ha Giang province in the future.


Subject Infrastructure politics. Significance In its efforts to improve Ecuador’s infrastructure, President Lenin Moreno’s government has turned to the private sector and international organisations. Infrastructure development is a key political challenge for Moreno, particularly given the substantial improvements made in this area by his predecessor and ally-turned-rival, Rafael Correa. The government is also grappling with corruption networks and embarking on a long-term programme of fiscal consolidation -- two factors that look certain to complicate matters further for Moreno. Impacts Infrastructure will be a key topic in next year’s regional elections, especially projects relating to basic services. Private investment and public-private partnerships will help the government limit the rise of public overseas debt. The opening of Quito’s new metro will put pressure on Guayaquil’s local government to pursue major new developments.

Purpose Winescape is the space where wine experiences occur, consisting of both tangible and intangible elements, and its understanding is very important for both the wine and the tourism industry. The purpose of this study is to define the attributes of winescape as seen from the perspective of organized travel. Design/methodology/approach The study uses the netnography approach by analyzing online user-generated content. A total of 118 TripAdvisor reviews for a wine tour company in Piemont, Italy, were coded using NVIVO12 software. Findings Six major elements of winescape were identified: tour guiding, core wine product, tour planning and logistics, complementary activities, food and dining and nature and scenery prominent. When compared to previous research, the findings show that the type of travel (organized versus independent travel) has a significant impact on the perceived winescape. Research limitations/implications As the study refers to a particular type of destination (Piedmont, Italy), and a specific product (private or small group tours), findings may not fully apply to wine regions and market segments of a different kind. Practical implications The proposed winescape model can be used by both practitioners (for enhancing the quality of their products) and researchers (for comparative studies or as a basis for customer satisfaction models specifically tailored to wine tours). Originality/value Organized wine tours as a specific aspect of wine tourism have been neglected in research so far. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to focus on winescape as seen through the lens of organized wine tourists, and the resulting model differs significantly from the existing ones.

Sukuk Negara is one of the sharia-based financing instruments issued by the government to meet the budget deficit. This study aims to identify priority issues in the development of Sukuk Negara to enhance the role of Sukuk Negara in supporting government infrastructure financing. From the results of data management using the Analytic Network Process (ANP) method, it is known that several priority problems include the issuance of Sukuk Negara financing limited to central government projects, the lack of quality and quantity of Islamic finance human resources compared to conventional finance, and the low interest in public investment in Islamic financial instruments. The priority of the solution is the need to make regulations that allow Sukuk Negara to finance PPP project financing schemes, increase innovation and quality of sukuk products so that they are able to achieve the set targets, and foster public investment interest. Thus, the strategy in supporting the government's infrastructure development is to increase the proportion of SBSN issuance, increase socialization and communication to the public, and diversify underlying assets.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore reasons for household preparation losses. Design/methodology/approach Observations of preparation behaviors and semi-structured interviews of nine people were conducted in their kitchens. The data were analyzed through a qualitative data analysis method. Findings Three types of preparation losses were identified, i.e. possibly avoidable food waste, excessive removals and unintentional losses. Possibly avoidable food waste and excessive removals were generated owing to people’s perception that is in the gray area between edible and inedible, their preferences, lower quality of food, convenience in preparation, lack of preparation skill and knowledge, and lack of concern about preparation losses. Unintentional losses were tiny pieces of food that were left on cooking tools. Research limitations/implications As this study’s participants were nine women living in Japan, further research is needed in order to achieve saturation. Originality/value Few studies have discussed reasons for preparation losses, and extant studies were based on a diary method and questionnaires. This present study uncovers several new reasons for preparation losses based on interviews and observations of consumer preparation behaviors. These new details would be helpful for campaigns or programs that aim to reduce food losses.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to reflect on how Portugal has dealt with economic crisis with reference to the tourism industry and from the perspective of a global distribution systems (GDS) operator. Design/methodology/approach – The article is based on information drawn from official information sources and relevant data from Travelport. Findings – In recent years, Portugal has developed a positive image in its source markets as a result of a refined strategy and because of the intrinsic quality of its offer and price competitiveness, thus making it an attractive destination. Now the challenge is to maintain the pace and actions in support of Portugal’s image, thereby ensuring its sustainability, with particular attention to security and the maintenance and cleanliness of public spaces. Originality/value – This article presents the perspective of a GDS operator with respect to the impacts of the Portuguese economic crisis on tourism and the responses made to address these challenges, thereby highlighting the resilience of tour operators.
