Abstract. Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy are personality traits understood to be dispositions toward amoral and antisocial behavior. Recent research has suggested that sadism should also be added to this set of traits. In the present study, we tested a hypothesis proposing that these four traits are expressions of one superordinate construct: The Dark Tetrad. Exploration of the latent space of four “dark” traits suggested that the singular second-order factor which represents the Dark Tetrad can be extracted. Analysis has shown that Dark Tetrad traits can be located in the space of basic personality traits, especially on the negative pole of the Honesty-Humility, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Emotionality dimensions. We conclude that sadism behaves in a similar manner as the other dark traits, but it cannot be reduced to them. The results support the concept of “Dark Tetrad.”

The author has found a perfect resemblance to exist between the appearances presented by pyroxylic spirit (Bihydrate of Methyline of Dumas and Peligot) under voltaic agency, and those which he had previously observed in regard to alcohol; a coincidence which was to be expected, from the interesting analogy existing between these two liquids in other respects. The pyroxylic spirit, after three distillations from quicklime, had a specific gravity of 801 at 62° F., and boiled in contact with mercury at 140° F., under a pressure of 29.5 inches. The leading facts observed were the following:—Minute quantities of acid, alkaline, and saline bodies, when dissolved with rectified pyroxylic spirit, favoured the voltaic action, by increasing the conducting power of the liquid. When it held in solution of pure potash, and was submitted to the agency of thirty-six pairs of four-inch plates in a tube with parallel platinum foil poles, hydrogen was given off from the negative pole, while no gas proceeded from the positive pole. A ten thousandth part of potash had a marked effect in promoting this action.

Introduction. Button battery ingestion is considered an emergency situation in pediatric patients that needs to be managed promptly; otherwise, it may lead to serious and potentially lethal complications, especially when it is impacted in the esophagus. Less attention has been given in cases where the battery passes into the stomach, with guidelines for emergency intervention being based on the presence of symptoms. Case Report. We present a case of an 18-month-old male patient who presented to our emergency department after button battery ingestion. He did not have any symptoms and no pathological findings were encountered during clinical examination. X-ray investigation revealed the presence of the battery in the stomach. The patient was admitted for observation and two hours later he had two episodes of vomiting. He underwent urgent endoscopic removal of the battery where multiple acute gastric mucosal erosion in place of direct contact of the battery’s negative pole with the mucosa of the gastric antrum was found. Conclusion. In specific cases the urgent endoscopic intervention for removal of an ingested button battery that is located in the stomach even in asymptomatic patients should be suggested.

This article claims that the universe is composed of very fine particles, which are billions of times smaller than electrons. These particles consist of one positive pole and one negative pole similar to protons and electrons (in terms of electrical charge), respectively. They are point electric charges, which their movements and bending of their chain in space create magnetic fields and electromagnetic waves. These particles possess mass that verges on zero, due to their minute size. Then, by examining several physical phenomena, the presence of them will be proved.

Previous measurements of the lateral electric fields near skin wounds in guinea pigs have detected DC fields between 100–200 mV/mm near the edge of the wound. We have studied the translocation response of motile primary human keratinocytes migrating on a collagen substrate while exposed to similar physiological DC electric fields. We find that keratinocytes migrate randomly on collagen in fields of 5 mV/mm or less, but in larger fields they migrate towards the negative pole of the field, exhibiting galvanotaxis. Since these cells have an average cell length of 50 microns, this implies that they are able to detect a voltage gradient as low as 0.5 mV along their length. This cath-odally-directed movement exhibits increased directedness with increasing field strengths between 10 and 100 mV/mm. We observe a maximally directed response at 100 mV/mm with half of the cells responding to the field within 14 minutes. The average speed of migration tended to be greater in fields above 50 mV/mm than in smaller fields. We conclude that human keratinocytes migrate towards the negative pole in DC electric fields that are of the same magnitude as measured in vivo near wounds in mammalian skin.

THE ANTITHESES IN THE “DREAMS” OF MARIAM, THE LITTLE ARAB (1846–1878) Antitheses as a thought figure are characteristic for mystical discourse. First, the panorama of aspects linked to the antithesis and the Catholic mystical discourse are presented. Then, the analyses of the antitheses drawn from the mystical discourse of the “little Arab” are crried out on the examples of the image of the cloud and the image of a cloud and a tree. In the first case, this figure is characterized by dissymmetric predicates (intensified and varied on the negative pole) performing the prophetic and warning function. In the second case, the antitheses – performing the educational function and offering moral and spiritual teaching – are very varied and are connected by logical links between the different elements of the images.

In the presence of plant roots, zoospores of Phytophthora megasperma var. sojae reacted in general as do other fungal zoospores: they were attracted to, and trapped in the immediate vicinity of the root surface, on which they encysted rapidly. Encysted zoospores formed a continuous sheath around the root, thickest just behind the root tip. Cyst germination was stimulated. Germ tubes were always initiated from the side of cysts closest to the root and grew towards it. In addition, a new feature was observed, suppression of repeated emergence of zoospores. Zoospore accumulation was nonspecific with respect to host and non-host, resistance, and susceptibility.Tests with exudates and extracts from roots of resistant and susceptible soybean varieties and a non-host, pea, confirmed the chemical nature of the stimulus inducing these responses. Zoospores observed in an electric field were not attracted towards either pole, but they were trapped and encysted rapidly around the negative pole. Cyst germination was not stimulated. Nevertheless, since encystment was more pronounced on root exudate agar mounted on the negative pole, electric charges on roots may also contribute to inducing early encystment of zoospores there. In an investigation of ions on zoospore responses, with ionic resins, all phases of zoospore response to roots, with the exception of attraction, occurred in the presence of hydrogen resin particles.

I was led into the following train of investigation from observing, that, when minute quantities of certain substances were dissolved in alcohol, and the liquid was acted on by a moderate voltaic power, evident signs of decomposition were exhibited by the evolution of elastic fluid at the negative pole. In investigating the nature of the changes produced, I was farther led to examine the action of voltaic electricity on a variety of alcoholic solutions, and also the agency of more powerful galvanic batteries on pure alcohol and on ether; and, ultimately, I was conducted into a field, into which I should have hesitated voluntarily to enter, namely, the voltaic decomposition of aqueous solutions, which has recently been investigated with so much success by a distinguished cultivator of science. In the following paper, it will be my object to give some account of the experiments which I have made on these different subjects, and of the results and views to which I have been led.

In March, 1881, I sent to the Royal Society a preliminary notice of some results I had obtained when working on the molecular discharge in high vacua. When the spark from a good induction coil traverses a tube having a flat aluminium pole at each end, the appearance changes according to the degree of exhaustion. Supposing atmospheric air to be the gas under exhaustion, at a pressure of about 7 millims. a narrow black space is seen to separate the luminous glow and the aluminium pole connected with the negative pole of the induction coil. As the exhaustion proceeds this dark space increases in thickness, until, at a pressure of about 0.02 millim. (between 20 and 30M.), the dark space has swollen out till it nearly fills the tube. The luminous cloud showing the presence of residual gas has almost disappeared, and the molecular discharge from the negative pole begins to excite phosphorescence on the glass where it strikes the side. There is great difference in the degree of exhaustion at which various substances begin to phosphoresce. Some refuse to glow until the exhaustion is so great that the vacuum is nearly non-conducting, whilst others begin to become luminous when the gauge is 5 or 10 millims. below the barometric level. The majority of bodies, however, do not phosphoresce till they are well within the negative dark space. This phosphorogenic phenomenon is at its maximum at about 1M., and, unless otherwise stated, the experiments now about to be described were all tried at this high degree of exhaustion. Under the influence of this discharge, which I have ventured to call radiant matter, a large number of substances emit phosphorescent light, some faintly and others with great intensity. On examining the emitted light in the spectroscope most bodies give a faint continuous spectrum, with a more or less decided concentration in one part of the spectrum, the superficial colour of the phosphorescing substance being governed by this preponderating emission in one or other part of the spectrum.
