Digital technologies are no longer the future but are the present of civil proceedings. That is why any research in this direction seems to be relevant. At the same time, some of the fundamental problems remain unattended by the scientific community. One of these problems is the problem of classification of digital technologies in civil proceedings. On the basis of instrumental and genetic approaches to the understanding of digital technologies, it is concluded that their most significant feature is the ability to mediate the interaction of participants in legal proceedings with information; their differentiating feature is the function performed by a particular technology in the interaction with information. On this basis, it is proposed to distinguish the following groups of digital technologies in civil proceedings: a) technologies of recording, storing and displaying (reproducing) information, b) technologies of transferring information, c) technologies of processing information. A brief description is given to each of the groups. Presented classification could serve as a basis for a more systematic discussion of the impact of digital technologies on the essence of civil proceedings. Particularly, it is pointed out that issues of recording, storing, reproducing and transferring information are traditionally more «technological» for civil process, while issues of information processing are more conceptual.

Processing (eg, cooking, grinding, drying) has changed the composition of food throughout the course of human history; however, awareness of process-formed compounds, and the potential need to mitigate exposure to those compounds, is a relatively recent phenomenon. In May 2015, the North American Branch of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI North America) Technical Committee on Food and Chemical Safety held a workshop on the risk-based process for mitigation of process-formed compounds. This workshop aimed to gain alignment from academia, government, and industry on a risk-based process for proactively assessing the need for and benefit of mitigation of process-formed compounds, including criteria to objectively assess the impact of mitigation as well as research needed to support this process. Workshop participants provided real-time feedback on a draft framework in the form of a decision tree developed by the ILSI North America Technical Committee on Food and Chemical Safety to a panel of experts, and they discussed the importance of communicating the value of such a process to the larger scientific community and, ultimately, the public. The outcome of the workshop was a decision tree that can be used by the scientific community and could form the basis of a global approach to assessing the risks associated with mitigation of process-formed compounds.

Parabens are widely used in different industries as preservatives and antimicrobial compounds. The evolution of analytical techniques allowed the detection of these compounds in different sources at µg/L and ng/L. Until today, parabens were already found in water sources, air, soil and even in human tissues. The impact of parabens in humans, animals and in ecosystems are a matter of discussion within the scientific community, but it is proven that parabens can act as endocrine disruptors, and some reports suggest that they are carcinogenic compounds. The presence of parabens in ecosystems is mainly related to wastewater discharges. This work gives an overview about the paraben problem, starting with their characteristics and applications. Moreover, the dangers related to their usage were addressed through the evaluation of toxicological studies over different species as well as of humans. Considering this, paraben detection in different water sources, wastewater treatment plants, humans and animals was analyzed based on literature results. A review of European legislation regarding parabens was also performed, presenting some considerations for the use of parabens.

Recent developments in remote imaging equipment carried on satellites have given the scientific community a vast amount of new information about the Sun and its atmosphere. Media coverage of the remarkable discoveries accompanied by impressive images of the Sun's atmosphere, and linkage to the loss of a television satellite over the United States, have focused public attention on the existence and effects of the Solar Wind. This paper sets out to illustrate the impact of the Solar Wind on radio aids to navigation, and to look at the possible effects on present and proposed systems.

The way that diversity, equity, and inclusion impact scientific careers varies for everyone, but it is evident that institutions providing an environment where being different or having differences creates a sense of being welcomed, supported, and valued are beneficial to the scientific community at large. In this commentary, three short stories from Texas-based microbiologists are used to depict (i) the importance of bringing the guiding principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion within their professional roles, (ii) the need to apply and translate those principles to support and enable successful scientific careers among peers and trainees, and (iii) the impact of effective science communication to increase the understanding of microbial environments among the community at large.

El impacto de la decisión es aún más profundo que si se tratase solo de una cuestión de dividendos, pues sin Ciencia no habrá Tecnología ni mucho menos Industria. Por ello, resulta difícil comprender cómo la actual gestión pretende insertar al país en un mundo que gira en base al conocimiento.ABSTRACTThe Argentine scientific community feels like Sisyphus these days, because the ingenuity would be condemned to push eternally to the top of the mountain, from where the stone returns irreparably to fall. The gods thought that there should be no more terrible punishment than useless labour, so the effort would fail to transfer to society. The impact of the decision is even more profound than if it were only a question of dividends, because without Science there will be no Technology, much less Industry. For this reason, it is difficult to understand how the present management intends to insert the country in a knowledge-based world.

Abstract Aging is the subject of various studies by the scientific community and monitoring by responsible institutions. The intensity of aging and the proportion of age groups among various communities differ due to different socio-economic conditions and characteristics. This article researches the impact of the war in Croatia 1991–1995 and postwar living conditions on the divergence of population aging in the ethnically heterogeneous Banija region. The first postwar census in 2001 recorded a population decline of 44.9% compared to the 1991 census. We analyze the effects of the war on changes in ethnic and age structure, as well as their interrelations. The quantitative and qualitative magnitude of these demographic changes in the inter-census period had a decisive influence on the correlation of age and ethnic structure. The article examines whether the relative share of Serbs or Croats in the total population of a settlement affects the average age of the settlement. The results confirmed that the Serbs are older than the Croats, and are in the phase of the most advanced demographic age. These changes raise the question of the demographic future and the biological viability of the Serbs, who were the majority in the region before the war.

In recent years, the scientific community has been urged to undertake research that can immediately have impact on development issues, including national policies, strategies, and people's livelihoods, among others. While this is a fair call from decision makers, it should also be realized that science by nature is about innovation, discovery and knowledge generation. In this context, there is need for a balance between long term scientific investigations and short term scientific applications. With regard to the former, researchers spend years investigating (or need data of sufficient record length) to provide sound and reliable solutions to a problem at hand while in the latter, it is possible to reach a solution with few selected analyses. In all cases, it is advisable that researchers, where possible should link their studies to topical development issues in their case studies. In this paper, we use a hydrometeorological project in the Notwane catchment, Botswana, to show the importance of linking research to development agenda for mutual benefit of researchers and policy makers. The results indicate that some key development issues are being addressed by the Project and the scope exists to improve the impact of the project.

There is a generalised consensus on the notable role that information systems and technologies (IS/IT) play in organisational performance. This evidence has been widely explored and recognised by both business practice and academia; as a result, the literature on information systems has acquired considerable relevance in the field of business administration due to its major role in the strategic process. In order to observe the impact of information systems research on the scientific community, we carried out a bibliometric study based on an analysis of the concurrences of the key words used in publications on the subject. This type of quantitative analysis can reveal the structure that supports a certain topic in a discipline and its evolution, as well as the most relevant related concepts. Specifically, six theoretical clusters were observed and defined: 1) data analytics, 2) electronic intra and inter-organisational exchanges, 3) dynamic capabilities, 4) geographical agglomerations, sustainability and tourism, 5) ERP, and 6) quality.

AbstractThe discovery by Seth C. Chandler (1891) that the motion of the pole (the reality of which had been established by K.F. Küstner and by the simultaneous latitude observations at Honolulu and Berlin by German astronomers) resulted from two components i.e. a free circular motion with a period of 427 days and a forced elliptical motion with a period of 365.25 days, raised considerable interest in the scientific community of astronomers and geophysicists.The celebrated Mécanique Céleste of Tisserand (1890) had been published just one year before at a time when doubts still persisted and arguments could be presented in favor of the fixed pole. Starting with Tisserand’s arguments, we describe in this paper the impact of the successive contributions by A. Greenhill, S. Newcomb, Th. Sloudsky, S. Hough, G. Herglotz, A. Love, J. Larmor and H. Poincaré to the solution of the problems raised by the Chandler period.The lines of reasoning taken by these eminent scientists were rigorously correct so that, after about one hundred years, contemporary researchers, who benefit from a far better knowledge of the inner structure of the Earth and are able to take advantage of modern computing power, do not contradict any of their conclusions and instead refine them with an accuracy which was not imaginable one century ago.
