This article is a response to the state of the art in monitoring the cooling capacity of quenching oils in industrial practice. Very often, a hardening shop requires a report with data on the cooling process for a particular quenching oil. However, the interpretation of the data can be rather difficult. The main goal of our work was to compare various criteria used for evaluating quenching oils. Those of which prove essential for operation in tempering plants would then be introduced into practice. Furthermore, the article describes monitoring the changes in the properties of a quenching oil used in a hardening shop, the effects of quenching oil temperature on its cooling capacity and the impact of the water content on certain cooling parameters of selected oils. Cooling curves were measured (including cooling rates and the time to reach relevant temperatures) according to ISO 9950. The hardening power of the oil and the area below the cooling rate curve as a function of temperature (amount of heat removed in the nose region of the Continuous cooling transformation - CCT curve) were calculated. V-values based on the work of Tamura, reflecting the steel type and its CCT curve, were calculated as well. All the data were compared against the hardness and microstructure on a section through a cylinder made of EN C35 steel cooled in the particular oil. Based on the results, criteria are recommended for assessing the suitability of a quenching oil for a specific steel grade and product size. The quenching oils used in the experiment were Houghto Quench C120, Paramo TK 22, Paramo TK 46, CS Noro MO 46 and Durixol W72.

By analyzing the cooling curves and the resulting melting point diagrams of the chloromethylsilane- pyridazine and pyrazine systems the existence of the incongruently melting addition compounds CH3SiCl3 • Pyridazine, (CH3)2SiCl2 • (Pyridazine)2, (CH3)3SiCl • (Pyridazine)2, CH3SiCl3 • (Pyrazine)2, (CH3)2SiCl2 • (Pyrazine)2 , (CH3)3SiCl • (Pyrazine)2 was proved. By electro-optical measurements of the turbidity point it was proved that the system (CH3)3SiCl- Pyridazine exhibits a miscibility gap which intersects the liquidus curve of the amine. Based on certain approximations it was possible to fit thermodynamic functions to the experimental results to obtain the excess data of mixing of the corresponding systems. These data allow for a more profound understanding of the Lewis-acid base behaviour of the silanes and amines.Chloromethylsilanes, Pyridazine, Pyrazine, Phase Diagrams, Addition Compounds, Thermodynamic Excess Functions

An algorithm is proposed for constructing curves of thermal cooling and ordering kinetics with a monotonic decrease in temperature for alloys to stoichiometric composition. Modeling is carried out by the Monte Carlo method in the model of a rigid crystal lattice and pair interatomic interactions. The application of the algorithm is illustrated by the example to a square lattice, taking into account interatomic interactions in the first two coordination spheres for alloys with the composition AB, A3B, and A3B5. The proposed model makes it possible to calculate individual sections of the phase diagrams to the state for binary alloys.

The method of quenching in tin melt was tested for low-weight parts with a large specific surface, made of a number of steels with a high temperature of the onset of martensitic transformation. The advantages of this method in comparison with traditional hardening technologies are established, as well as regularities in the change of cooling curves for various mass ratios of the part and the quencher are revealed. The practical possibility of adjusting the cooling rates in the process of hardening in various temperature ranges in order to optimize the phase ratio in steel while maintaining the possibility of preventing the occurrence of microcracks is shown.

Aluminium-reinforced composites play a vital role in the engineering industry because of their better strength and stiffness. The properties are directly related to the solidification phenomenon of the cast alloy. The design engineer should understand the importance of the solidification behavior of base alloy and its reinforcement. Composites’ solidification study is rare, and the reviews are limited. The solidification process is analyzed using the finite element method (FEM), and this would fetch a lot of information about the cooling rate of the composites and also helps to reduce the time in experimentation. This paper reports and plots the cooling curves of Al/SiCp composites using simulation software. Cylindrical-shaped composites were developed using the squeeze casting method, and the experimental cooling curves were plotted using a K-type thermocouple. Composites samples were prepared at the following squeeze pressures: 0, 30, 50, 70, 100, and 130 MPa; melt and die temperature was kept constant at 800 and 400°C, respectively. The experimental and FEA cooling curves were compared, and it was agreed that the increase in the squeeze pressure increases the cooling rate of the developed composite. Furthermore, the effect of temperature distribution from the inner region of the melt and die material which causes the radial and tangential stress of components has also been examined.
