A fully-integrated self-startup circuit with ultra-low voltage for thermal energy harvesting is presented in this paper. The converter is composed of an enhanced swing LC oscillator and a charge pump with decreased equivalent input capacitance. The LC oscillator has ultra-low input voltage and high output voltage swing, and the charge pump has a fast charging speed and small equivalent input capacitance. This circuit is designed with 0.18[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]m standard CMOS process. The simulation results show that the output voltage is in the range of 0.14[Formula: see text]V and 2.97[Formula: see text]V when the input voltage is changed from 50[Formula: see text]mV to 150[Formula: see text]mV. The output voltage could reach 2.87[Formula: see text]V at the input voltage of 150[Formula: see text]mV and the load of 1[Formula: see text]M[Formula: see text]. The maximum efficiency is in the range of 10.0% and 14.8% when the input voltage is changed from 0.2[Formula: see text]V to 0.4[Formula: see text]V. The circuit is suitable for thermoelectric energy harvesting to start with ultra-low input voltage.

This chapter presents a state-of-the-art multi-objective/multi-constraint design automation approach applied to the design of an LC-Voltage Controlled Oscillator and an LC-Oscillator for a 130 nm technology node and leading to sets of design solutions showing figures-of-merit around -192 dBc/Hz and -186 dBc/Hz, respectively. The proposed approach, implemented in AIDA-C, guarantees accuracy by using commercial circuit simulators (HSPICE® and ELDO®) to evaluate the performance of the tentative circuit solutions, where the number of time-consuming circuit simulations is efficiently pruned by the optimization kernel. Three multi-objective optimization algorithms, the NSGA-II, the MOPSO, and the MOSA, are experimented with in the synthesis of the quoted oscillators and compared in terms of performance using statistical results obtained from multiple synthesis runs for each one of the oscillators. The performance of the optimized oscillators is then compared to other state-of-the-art results, showing the benefits of the presented multi-objective design approach.

In this paper, an offline bandwidth and frequency calibration method for an on–off LC oscillator-based ultra-wideband impulse radio (UWB-IR) transmitter is presented. Implemented in 0.18-[Formula: see text]m CMOS, the offline calibration circuits consume very little power. This allows the transmitter to consume an ultra-low average power of 319[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]W over 3–5[Formula: see text]GHz at 2[Formula: see text]Mbps. The calibration is critical to ensure the FCC spectral mask compliance despite the process–voltage–temperature (PVT) variations. The transmitter can deliver a large differential output swing of 1.8–3[Formula: see text]V to a 100-[Formula: see text] load with minimal power efficiency of 7% at different data rates (2–30[Formula: see text]Mbps). It is suitable for WPAN application with localization and positioning capabilities.
