Culture‐free genotyping of Neisseria gonorrhoeae from urogenital samples in a high‐density urban area in the North of Italy

Ciprofloxacin-resistant gonococci have been isolated from patients in the United Kingdom since 1993. Until recently, evidence has suggested that the majority of infections are not endemic but have been acquired abroad. In October 1999, increasing numbers of ciprofloxacin resistant isolates of the non-requiring auxotype were reported in Oldham and Rochdale (Northwest England). These and similar isolates from elsewhere in England and Wales were genetically characterized using a simplified opa-typing method (a non-radioactive PCR–RFLP method targeting the opa family of genes). Of 73 isolates studied, 24 had unique opa-types (10 from infections acquired abroad), whilst the remaining 49 were indistinguishable (none were known to be acquired abroad). This cluster included 31 isolates from Oldham and Rochdale, 16 from elsewhere in the north of England, and 2 from Southern England and South Wales with known epidemiological links to cases from Manchester and Rochdale respectively. This study illustrates the potential for spread of an antibiotic resistant clone of N. gonorrhoeae both locally and nationally and demonstrates that endemic acquisition of ciprofloxacin-resistant gonococci is now a significant problem in the United Kingdom.

Atmospheric carbonyls (aldehyde and ketone compounds) can be precursors for ozone and PM2.5, and they play an essential role in atmospheric chemistry. Linfen is a basin between mountains on the east and west, and there are many coking plants on the north and south sides of its urban area. The special topography and unfortunate industrial layout have frequently contributed to serious air pollution in Linfen. In order to investigate the pollution characteristics of atmospheric carbonyls in winter in urban Linfen, the carbonyl compounds were collected from the Municipal Committee site (MC) and the Yaowangtai site (YWT) from 16 to 25 January 2019, and their concentrations were analyzed by a high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detector (HPLC-UV). The results show that formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acetone were the most abundant compounds, accounting for more than 70% of the total mass concentration of carbonyls in urban Linfen. Levels of these three carbonyls increased during the morning and evening traffic rush hours. The mass concentration of formaldehyde at both sites reached peak values at around noon (10:00–14:00). In addition, the mass concentrations of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acetone were positively correlated with CO mass concentrations, whereas only formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were positively correlated with temperature. Therefore, atmospheric formaldehyde in urban Linfen’s winter mainly came from vehicle exhaust emissions and the secondary generation of photochemical reactions. Most of the acetaldehyde came from vehicle exhaust emissions, and photochemical reactions also partially contributed to it. For acetone, vehicle exhaust emissions were the main source. In addition, coking industry emissions from Northern Linfen′s Hongtong County may also have contributed to the atmospheric carbonyls in the urban area of Linfen. For the first time, this study found that formaldehyde showed different behavior to acetaldehyde and acetone; that is, the nighttime decrease in formaldehyde mass concentration was greater than that of acetaldehyde and acetone.

Pharyngeal testing for Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonorrhoea) in heterosexual men is not currently recommended in UK guidelines; however, it was being undertaken in a service in the North East of England for those presenting with urethral infection or as contacts of gonorrhoea. This service evaluation was performed to see if this practice should continue, or cease in line with national recommendations. The results revealed that 10% of contacts were positive in the pharynx only. Had this test not been performed, it would have left these patients without any treatment, as the current guidelines now discourage epidemiological treatment of contacts. Twenty-seven per cent of all heterosexual men diagnosed with urethral infection also had oropharyngeal gonorrhoea, with implications for persistent infection, had testing not been performed followed by a test of cure.

Maps showing the distribution of soil drainage classes on Burnaby Mountain in the Greater Vancouver urban area during 1974 and 1978, and systematic profile investigations during the intervening years, have revealed distinct changes. Construction of Simon Fraser University has diverted the heavy precipitation associated particularly with the plateau top of the mountain, off the north-facing slopes and onto the south-facing slopes. Hence, there has been an extension of well-drained soils onto north-facing footslopes and soils with more restricted drainage onto south-facing footslopes.

The North American species of the non-native flora of the Kyiv urban area (Ukraine): a checklist and analysisThis paper presents an annotated checklist of the North American species established in the flora of the Kyiv urban area (KUA). For each taxon, the following data are provided: distribution in the area, degree of naturalization, period of immigration, mode of immigration and ecological characteristics. The group of the North American neophytes consists of 114 species belonging to 71 genera and 36 families and 23 cultivated species and of problematic taxonomic status. Among them prevail ergasiophytes (26%), ergasiophygophytes (22%) and ephemerophytes (19%). The majority of neophytes (47%) have spread over all types of ecotopes. Among them 12 species are invasive alien plants in the KUA.

Those familiar with the history of navigation aids may, with good reason, be reluctant to look upon any new aid as a panacea, but there appears to be no doubt that doppler will effect a revolutionary improvement in air navigation as we know it today. We have, for the first time, an aid self-contained in the aeroplane, independent of propagation conditions or weather, capable of giving position information anywhere over the globe with an accuracy certainly adequate to join the approach facilities at the destination aerodrome. Some of us not actively engaged in flying the world's routes tend to be influenced in our outlook by the navigation problems and facilities in high-density areas like western Europe, the United States or even the North Atlantic, and we are inclined to forget that this is only a very small part of the world route structure. The intensity of aviation activity in these high-density areas warrants the establishment of a network of radio beacons, ranges, VOR's and space pattern systems like Loran and Decca to bring order into the traffic flow, besides assisting the navigation of individual aeroplanes. When, however, we consider the immense distances flown by aircraft through Africa and India to the Far East and Australia, to South America and across the Pacific, to say nothing of Communist Asia, we begin to realize what a real dearth of navigation facilities there is over the globe.
