MODIFICATION OF RBD PALM KERNEL AND RBD PALM STEARIN OIL WITH ZDDP ADDITIVE ADDITION

Vegetable oils have gained worldwide concern due to environmental issues since it is biodegradable, renewable and environmental-friendly. However, the limitations of vegetable oils such as having low oxidation stability and poor low temperature properties need to be solved. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the tribological behavior of refined, bleached and deodorized (RBD) palm kernel and RBD palm stearin by using a modified pin-on-disc tester. The influence of an anti-wear/extreme pressure (AW/EP) additive on the anti-friction and anti-wear characteristics was also evaluated. The experiment was carried out by varying zinc-dialkyl-dithiophosphate (ZDDP) additive concentration of 1wt%, 3wt% and 5wt%; load of 1kg, sliding speed of 2.5 m/s, test duration of 60 minutes and at room temperature. The findings have revealed that without an additive, RBD palm kernel and RBD palm stearin have high friction coefficient and wear as compared with synthetic oils. The addition of additives helps in the improvement of tribological performance of tested vegetable oils. It can be concluded that vegetable oils have a great potential to be used as a petroleum-based substitute.

This study investigates the effect of normal load on the frictional properties of palm kernel activated carbon-epoxy (PKAC-E) composite. The PKAC-E composite specimen was fabricated by hot compression molding method. The dry sliding test was performed by using a pin-on-disc tribometer at various normal loads, range from 5 – 100N. The sliding speed and distance were constant. All tests were performed at room temperature. It was found that the coefficient of friction decreases with normal load, though at 60N, friction coefficient increases slightly and remains almost invariant at about 0.04 with normal load. The main conclusion of this study is that PKAC-E composite has a potential for tribological material application but only limited at low normal load under unlubricated conditions.

Vegetable oils constitute a potential base stock for bio-lubricants, which has good biodegradability, high flash point, high viscosity index and excellent boundary lubrication properties. They also possess some limitations like low thermal and oxidation stability, poor low temperature properties and narrow range of viscosities. These limitations can be altered by modifying the vegetable oils chemically or by providing additives into the oils. This research work focused on the chemical modification of pure rice bran oil by epoxidation process using 30% hydrogen peroxide and glacial acetic acid. The epoxidized rice bran oil was then subjected to ring opening process using butanoic acid. The epoxidation process was optimized with four factors (Temperature, Time, Weight % of Catalyst, Hydrogen Peroxide molar ratio), each factors having four levels. The lubricant properties of pure rice bran oil (RBO), epoxidized rice bran oil (ERBO) and ring opened rice bran oil (RRBO) were studied. It was noted that the lubricant properties of ERBO and RRBO were better compared to pure RBO.

The friction and wear tests on AISI 1040 are carried out under raw, modified versions of two nonedible vegetable oils Pongam (Pongamia pinnata) and Jatropha (Jatropha curcas) and also commercially available mineral oil using a pin-on-disc tribometer for various sliding distances and loads. A significant drop in friction and wear for AISI 1040 is observed under Pongam and Jatropha raw oil compared to mineral oil, for the complete tested sliding distance and load, increasing the potential of vegetable oil for tribological applications. Stribeck curves are also drawn to understand the regimes of lubrication. Both the vegetable oils showed a clear reduction in the boundary lubrication regimes, leading to an early start of full film lubrication.
