Monitoring of Puccinia graminis subsp. graminicola and Puccinia coronata f. sp. lolii was carried out in Plant breeding station called Větrov. The pathogens were estimated on turf grass (Lolium perenne L., Deschampsia caespitosa (L.) P. B.) from 2009 to 2014. Puccinia graminis subsp. graminicola was detected in the increased level in 2009 and 2012. The highest amount of mixed infections was determined in 2014 because of the warmest winter from all monitored years and low precipitations. Significant differences were found out in the resistance of similar plant materials grown in different fields. Significant effect of weather conditions and supposed effect of different infectious pressure on various fields were reflected in these facts. At evaluated grasses, the highest (P < 0.05) occurence of Puccinia graminis subsp. graminicola. Lolium perenne L. was observed and the infection of Puccinia graminis subsp. graminicola (P < 0.05) was determined higher than in Deschampsia caespitosa (L.) P. B.

SUMMARYFive selected clones of Lolium perenne were selfed and the ten possible diallel crosses, without reciprocals, made. The progenies were grown in a split-plot design in which whole plots comprised the four nitrogen rates (0, 225, 450 and 675 kg/ha of N) and sub-plots the fifteen progenies, square planted at 0·25 m.The percentage of the applied nitrogen recovered, and the utilization of the nitrogen by the plant, were measured. Data were collected from four harvests in each of two consecutive years. The diallel was analysed by Griffing's (1956) Method II, Model II.There were significant effects for nitrogen rates, progenies and their interaction for both ‘recovery’ and ‘utilization’, but years were significantly different for ‘recovery’ only. The effect of applied nitrogen was mainly linear and it was the linear effect of applied nitrogen which interacted most with the progeny effects.Significant g.c.a. and s.c.a. effects were found but they varied between nitrogen rates and years. For ‘utilization’ the interaction nitrogen rates x g.c.a. was significant on two year means but there was no significance for the nitrogen interaction with s.c.a. The g.c.a. values obtained for both parameters did reveal some trends between the five parents.The presence of significant additive and non-additive genetic variation is discussed in relation to a plant breeding programme.

SUMMARYResidual nitrogen from white clover/ryegrass swards and ryegrass monocultures was quantified in terms of the barley yield obtained after ploughing the swards. Clover/ryegrass swards based on small and medium-leaved cultivars of white clover and ryegrass monocultures were grazed continuously by sheep for 3 years (1984–87) at the Welsh Plant Breeding Station, Aberystwyth, ploughed in the following spring (1988) and then sown with the spring barley cultivar Doublet. Yield of barley obtained after clover/ryegrass mixtures was 50% greater than barley harvested after ryegrass monocultures. Barley yield was 1·6 t/ha more following the white clover cultivars Gwenda and SI84 with ryegrass than following ryegrass monocultures.

Stem rust, caused by Puccinia graminis, and crown rust, caused by P. coronata, are common rust diseases on cool-season grasses (Karakkat et al. 2018), for which long-distance spore dispersal was recorded in northern US (Harder and Haber 1992). During the summers of 2019 and 2020, severe infection of stem rust and crown rust was observed on > 60% of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) germplasm plants in a breeding nursery located at the University of Georgia, Griffin GA. Rust-infected leaves first presented uredinia pustules, then black telia towards the end of the season. The uredinia pustules of stem rust and crown rust were brick-red and, yellow and arranged along the host veins, respectively. The urediniospores were one-celled, round to ovoid and measured from 20.75±2.44 μm (crown rust) to 27±3.60 μm long (stem rust). The teliospores were two-celled and measured from 45.75±10.14 μm (stem rust) to 51.60±4.0 μm long (crown rust) (Leonard et al. 2005; Cummins 1971). Urediniospores of both rusts were collected from infected plants in the field in April of 2020 using a Piston vacuum pump (Welch by Gardner Denver Ltd.) and stored at -80 °C in 1.5 ml Eppendorf tubes. Genomic DNA was extracted by grinding the urediniospores in liquid nitrogen using mortar and pestle, followed by the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide method (Doyle and Doyle 1987). The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the ribosomal DNA was amplified using the ITS5-ITS4 primers (White et al. 1990). BLASTn and phylogenetic analyses revealed that the sequence of stem rust (GenBank acc. no. MW430963) and crown rust (GenBank acc. no. MW431324) pathogens had >99% similarity with P. graminis (GenBank acc. no. HQ317538) and P. coronata var. avenae f. sp. avenae (clade V; Liu and Hambleton 2013) (GenBank acc. no. EU014044), respectively. Pathogenicity tests were conducted on the tall fescue cultivar ‘Bandit’. For each rust, 12 pots (10 cm × 10 cm) were planted, each containing 13 seeds in a Sungro professional growing mix soil (Sun Gro Horticulture Distribution Inc.). The plant materials were kept in the greenhouse at 20°C/ 25°C (night/day),15-hrs of light, and watered twice a week for 4-weeks. Urediniospores were recovered from -80°C and allowed to acclimate at room temperature for 1 h. For each rust, 20 ml of suspension containing 1×105 urediniospores ml−1 and 5 μl of Tween-twenty (Agdia Inc. Elkhart, IN) were used to inoculate 6 pots; while 6 control pots were sprayed with sterile water. After inoculation, plants were allowed to dry for 1 h and then transferred to a dark chamber at 20°C and 90% of humidity for 12-15 h. At 10-days post inoculation, all inoculated plants developed rust symptoms identical to those observed in the field, whereas control plants had no symptoms. Stem and crown rust pathogens were re-isolated from the artificially inoculated tall fescue plants. Based on form, size, color and numbers of cells forming the spores, a 1947 Festuca elatior specimen from Georgia mentioning Puccinia coronata (Hanlin 1966), held at the Julian H. Miller Mycological Herbarium (Catalog No. GAM00013162), was discarded as an earlier record of P. coronata var. avenae and could have been misdiagnosed. Due to the fragile integrity of the original infected plant sample as well as the incipient infection, DNA identification was unsuccessful. To our knowledge, this is the first morphological, genetic and taxonomic report of P. graminis and P. coronata var. avenae f. sp. avenae on tall fescue in Georgia, USA

Abstract The analysis of seed health and germination capacity of 7 varieties of Lolium perenne, originated from two breeding station and two seed company localized in different places of Poland, harvested in 2006, 2007 and 2008 were performed. Results of mentioned analysis indicated that seeds were contaminated by numerous species of fungi. The most numerous group of fungi were saprophytes or weak parasites such as: Alternaria alternata, Epicoccum nigrum, Septonema chaetospira and Penicillium spp. Pathogenic species were represented by species of Drechslera, Fusarium, Phoma, Curvularia lunata and Bipolaris sorokiniana. Seed germination capacity was influenced by contamination of fungi. It was found that seed more often contaminated by fungi germinated much poorer then seed with lower infection.

A tenyészedényes kísérletünket a DE AGTC MÉK Agrokémiai és Talajtani Intézet tenyészházában állítottuk be 2010. május 27-én. A kísérletben Debrecen-Látókép környékéről származó mészlepedékes csernozjom vályogtalajt alkalmaztunk, amely az alábbi jellemzőkkel rendelkezett: KA: 37,5; leiszapolható rész: 51%; pH(KCl): 5,5; pH(H2O): 6,6; Hu%: 2,8; AL-P2O5: 140 mg·kg-1; AL-K2O: 316,3 mg·kg-1. Az adatok alapján a kísérleti talaj gyengén savanyú, vályog kötöttségű, közepes nitrogén- és foszfor-, valamint jó kálium-ellátottsággal rendelkezett. A kísérletben kontroll-, műtrágya-, valamint szalmakezelést alkalmaztunk, melyeket bizonyos kombinációkban három különböző baktériumkészítménnyel (Bactofil A, EM-1, Microbion UNC) egészítettünk ki. A kísérletet három ismétlésben véletlenblokk elrendezésben állítottuk be. A tesztnövény angolperje (Lolium perenneL.) volt. A kísérlet kezdetétől számított 8. héten a talaj-, valamint a növényminták begyűjtésére került sor. Meghatároztuk a növényminták száraztömegét, a növény foszfor- és káliumtartalmát, valamint a talajminták nitrát-, valamint AL-oldható foszfor- és káliumtartalmát. Eredményeink alapján főbb megállapításaink a következők: – Az angolperje száraztömegét a műtrágyakezelés szignifikánsan növelte. A hatás a tápelem-ellátottság javulásával magyarázható. – A növény foszforkoncentrációja a műtrágyázás következtében csökkent, amelyet a hígulási effektussal magyarázhatunk. – A növény káliumkoncentrációját a műtrágya-, valamint a műtrágya+baktériumtrágya kezelések szignifikánsan serkentették. – A talaj nitráttartalma szignifikánsan növekedett a műtrágyakezelés kivételével minden kezelésben. – A talaj AL-P2O5-tartalma az NPK-műtrágyázás és az EM-1 kezelés következtében statisztikailag igazolható mértékben megnövekedett, míg az AL-K2O-tartalom kizárólag a szalmakezelés hatására nőtt. A baktériumkészítmények önmagukban alkalmazva általában nem eredményeztek jelentős változást a vizsgált paraméterekben, azonban a készítmények szerves/ásványi anyagokkal kombinált adagolása esetében különböző mértékben befolyásolták a vizsgált mutatókat.

It Is claimed that the use of the correct enzyme system as an additive on grass silage will satisfactorily control the fermentation and reduce the cell-wall fibre content, thus preserving the nutrients In the silage and aiding their utilisation by the animal (Henderson and McDonald, 1977; Huhtanen et al, 1985; Raurama et al, 1987; Chamberlain and Robertson, 1989; Gordon, 1989;).The aim of the present experiment was to assess the effect of biological additives, enzymes or a combination of enzymes with an Inoculum of lactic acid bacteria, on the composition of silage and on its nutritive value when offered to store lambs as the sole constituent of their diet.On 1st June 1988, first cut perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L) at pre-ear emergence was ensiled direct cut untreated (U), treated with a commercial enzyme (E) or with a commercial inoculum of lactic acid bacteria with enzymes (I) in 6t capacity bunker silos. The grass was cut with a mower and lifted with a New Holland precision chop forage harvester. The additives were pumped onto the grass using a dribble bar sited over the pick-up drum.
