The Effect of Feeding System on the Carcass Quality of Crossbred Lambs with Texel

The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of feeding system on the growth rate and carcass quality of crossbred Improved Jezersko-Solčava x Texel (JSRT) lambs and to evaluate the effect of sex on these traits. The trial was conducted in nature according to the traditional rearing systems. The trial included 44 crossbred lambs, which were born and reared until the slaughter in three different flocks. In the age of 10 days suckled lambs were offered with ad libitum corresponding diets according to the feeding system. All lambs were slaughtered in seven consecutive days by the same procedure. The effect of feeding system significantly affected daily gain from birth to slaughter, EUROP carcass conformation and shoulder width. Likewise, the effect of sex significantly affected daily gain from birth to slaughter and internal fatness of carcasses. According to carcass cuts the feeding system significantly affected only the proportion of neck and leg. Considering meat quality traits, feeding system had a significant effect on the pH 45 and CIE a* values. In this study, we could speculate that more than the feeding system the growth and the carcass traits as well as meat traits were affected by the amount of the supplement.

AbstractResponses in carcass composition and meat quality after seven generations of selection for components of lean growth rate were examined in a population of Large White pigs. There were four selection groups in the study, with divergent selection for lean growth rate on ad libitum (LGA) or restricted (LGS) feeding regimes, lean food conversion ratio (LFC) and daily food intake (DFI). In generations six and seven, two offspring from each of 10 sires, within each selection line, were to be allocated for half-carcass dissection and measurement of meat quality. There were 320 animals in the study, with 40 animals from each of the high and low selection lines and, within each selection line, two offspring per sire.Responses in carcass composition were similar in the three selection groups given food ad libitum, but rates of lean and fat growth rate differed between selection lines. Intramuscular fat content was reduced with selection for high LGA and high LFC but was increased with selection for low DFI (-1·7 and -3·2 v. 2·7 (s.e.d. 0·7) mg/g), which was unexpected given the higher carcass fat content of the low DFI line, relative to the high line (249 v. 190 (s.e.d. 7) g/kg). Muscle colour was darker, as measured by trained sensory panel assessment, in selection lines which reduced the rate of fat deposition to achieve a leaner carcass (high LFC and low DFI) but there was no response in muscle colour with selection for LGA (0·4 and 0·3 v. 0·0 (s.e.d. 0·1)). Responses in muscle shear force (5·3 v. 4·4 (s.e.d. 0·4) kg) and flavour liking (4·0 v. 4·3 (s.e.d. 0·12)) were limited to the LGA and LFC selection groups, respectively. There were no significant responses in muscle moisture content, muscle pH or myofibrillar fragmentation index, nor were there any responses in meat quality with selection on LGS. Therefore, decreasing the rate of fat deposition was associated with darker meat and increasing the rate of lean growth was associated with higher shear force. There were selection strategy specific responses in the fatty acid composition of intramuscular fat, which may have contributed to the responses in eating quality.In general, responses in meat quality were small, such that incorporation of meat quality traits in selection objectives, which are primarily focused on increasing the efficiency of lean meat production, may not be necessary. However, it would be pertinent to evaluate periodically genotypes of breeding companies for muscle quality traits.

There is great variation in lamb carcass quality due to there being many breeds and crosses involved in lamb production. Breed of lamb appears to influence the pattern of development of the important carcass components, and thus the carcass quality, when comparison is made at equal weights. Plane of nutrition may also affect the growth rate, carcass composition and eating quality of lambs of the same genotype. It was planned to study the effect of both breed and diet on growth performance, carcass and meat quality characteristics by feeding two different diets to the lambs of two different breeds similarly managed from birth to slaughter.

<p>The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of rearing system (confinement, C <em>vs </em>semi-confinement, SC) and sex (barrows <em>vs </em>females) on growth performance, carcass traits and meat quality of “Criollo negro de la costa ecuatoriana” pigs. A total of 32 pigs, 16 barrows and 16 gilts were used. The average daily gain (0.30 kg/day <em>vs </em>0.22 kg/day), slaughter weight (51.4 kg <em>vs </em>43.1 kg), morphometric parameters and weights for the most valuable meat cuts were higher in C pigs than in SC pigs, whereas hot and cold carcass yields were higher in SC pigs than in C pigs. The loin and sirloin percentages from C pigs were lower and higher compared with those SC pigs, respectively. Carcass of C pigs showed higher percentage of fat and lower percentage of lean and bone that SC pigs. The rearing system had scarce effects on meat quality traits and mineral composition. Meat from C pigs showed lower scores for color, brightness, and unctuousness, and higher for metallist taste, juiciness and persistence of flavor than SC pigs. Few sensory attributes of cooking chops were affected by sex. Metallist taste was higher in barrows, while brightness and lard flavor were higher in females. It can be concluded that the rearing system had a significant effect on most of the productive and carcass traits, whereas its effect was limited on the meat traits. Sex had little influence on most of the traits studied.</p>

Twenty-one Friesian steers were grown to a final fasted liveweight of 469 kg. Seven of the steers grazed irrigated ryegrass-white clover pastures, seven steers were fed on a high energy ration ad libitum, and seven were given a ration of the same composition as the second group but at a restricted amount such that the growth rate was similar to that of the grazing steers. There were no significant differences in carcass weight between the three groups. The dressing percentage of the grain ad libitum group was 58%, the restricted grain group 57% and the pasture group 55%. The dressing percentage was significantly lower (P < 0.05) in the pasture group. The grain ad libitum group had 51.5% more (P < 0.05) oaental fat than the pasture group, and the restricted group 28.9% more (P < 0.05) than the pasture group. In dissections of the 9th, 10th and 11th ribs the grain ad lib. group had 35.4% fat, the restricted grain group 32.8% and the pasture group 26.5%, the proportion of fat being significantly (P < 0.05) lower in the pasture group than in the grain ad lib. group. No significant differences were found in either tenderness, juiciness or flavour between the three groups.

Abstract. Within the scope of a growth study fattening, carcass and meat quality traits of MHS gene carriers (Nn) and homozygous negative (NN) castrated male pigs (n=96) kept under two different feeding systems were investigated. The experimental group was intensively fed during the whole fattening period (age 10 to 26 weeks). According to feeding recommendations for barrows, the control group was also fed intensively from 10th to 17th week (growth phase) while feed was restricted from 18th to 26th week (finishing phase). As expected, feeding system affected fattening performance significantly. Intensively fed pigs showed a higher daily feed intake in the finishing phase and in the complete fattening period while no differences could be found in the growth phase. Daily gain was higher in the intensive group than in control during the finishing phase and complete fattening period (Δ = 285 g and Δ = 125 g, resp). Feed conversion ratio was superior in restricted feeding: intensively fed pigs took 230 g more feed/kg live weight. NN pigs had a higher feed intake and higher daily gain than Nn genotypes. Carcass quality was also influenced by feeding system: pigs of the experimental group which were on average 14.4 kg heavier than those of the control group had clearly more backfat and percentage of lean was significantly lower. A significant effect of MHS genotype on leanness was not observed. Within intensive feeding system Nn pigs tended to be leaner than NN pigs. In meat quality significant differences between feeding groups were found only for electrical conductivity and for intramuscular fat. For both traits higher values were measured in the experimental group. But meat quality was clearly affected by MHS genotype: in gene carriers significantly lower pH1 values and higher conductivity after 24 h were found in loin and ham. In tendency, intensively fed NN genotypes had a higher intramuscular fat content than intensively fed Nn pigs.

This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of selection criteria for post-weaning daily gain (PWDG) and early sexual heifer precocity (PP14) on the performance, carcass traits and meat quality of Nellore bulls. In year one, 50 animals were selected according to their expected progeny differences (EPDs) for PWDG and grouped as high (HG) or low (LG) groups. In year two, 50 animals were selected according to EPD for PP14 and also grouped as high (HP) or low (LP). After slaughter, samples of the longissimus muscle area (LMA) were used to evaluate meat quality. Most of performance traits were not affected by the selection criteria. However, the HG group had higher dressing percentage (p = 0.028), LMA (p = 0.02) and fat trim in the forequarter (p = 0.04) compared to the LG group. The HP group tended to have greater dry matter intake (p = 0.08), LMA (p = 0.05), rump fat (p = 0.04), heavier striploins (p = 0.07), tenderloins (p = 0.09) and briskets (p = 0.08) compared with LP group. In conclusion, the selection based on divergent groups PWDG or PP14 has a small impact on performance, carcass and meat quality traits.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of immunocastration on the performance, testosterone concentration, carcass traits and meat quality of feedlot-finished Nellore cattle. Fifty-eight males (430 ± 36 kg bodyweight; 24 months old) were separated into three groups in a randomised complete design: surgically castration (n = 15), immunocastrated (anti-gonadotropin-releasing hormone (Bopriva®) vaccine, n = 21) and non-castrated (n = 22). The animals were housed in individual pens and fed ad libitum for 90 days with a common diet comprising 70% concentrate and 30% roughage (corn silage). The non-castrated animals had a greater average daily gain, feed efficiency, hot carcass weight and carcass yield than the surgically castrated and immunocastrated animals (P &lt; 0.05). Surgically castrated cattle grew faster and more efficiently than those castrated immunologically (P &lt; 0.05). The surgically castrated and immunocastrated animals had higher colour values L*, a* and b* and cooking loss than non-castrated animals (P &lt; 0.05). In conclusion, immunocastration decreased cattle performance compared with surgically castrated or non-castrated animals. However, immunocastration resulted in better meat quality compared with non-castrated, making it an alternative to surgical castration with no negative effects on animal welfare.

SUMMARY1. Two experiments were conducted, one with pigs fed individually on a restricted scale of feeding, and one with pigs fed ad libitum in groups, to test Probioticum as a feed additive with and without nitrovin and zinc bacitracin.2. Growth rate, feed conversion, killing-out percentage and carcass quality were measured.3. No significant difference was shown in any of the characteristics measured between diets containing any of the additives, singly or in combination.

The aim of the study was to establish the relationship between a calpastatin gene (CAST) polymorphism, the ryanodine receptor gene (RYR1) polymorphism and carcass/meat quality traits in crossbred pigs. No significant differences in the analyzed pigs were found between genotypes CC and CT at the locus RYR1 and CD and DD at the locus CAST/MspI in terms of carcass and meat quality. However, a significant association of the CAST/ApaLI polymorphism with carcass quality and meat marbling were observed. The carcasses of AB pigs had significantly higher carcass percentage of lean meat, thinner backfat and thicker muscle, as well as lower meat marbling, as compared with the BB pigs. Furthermore, interactions CAST/MspI × RYR1 and CAST/ApaLI × RYR1 were found significant in relation to all the studied carcass traits. The results presented here imply that the CAST gene recognized with ApaLI may be considered as important in terms of the way it affects porcine carcass quality traits. Moreover, the research has revealed a relationship between CAST and RYR1 genotypes as regards formation of carcass traits in pigs. Follow-up studies, however, should be carried out on larger populations representing all possible CAST genotypes.;
