A procedure for calculating the response of an array to a harmonic excitation applied at the upstream end is presented. The fluid forces on the array are modeled following the slender-body approximation and the cross-flow principle. An equivalent linear damping is used to replace the quadratic drag due to cross-flow separation. The equivalent linear damping is determined using an iterative procedure. Numerical and asymptotic solutions are derived, and the response of a typical long array is calculated. It is found that, when the separation drag is included, the array exhibits the behavior of an over-damped system, responding only to low-frequency excitations.

The interface of bolted joint commonly focuses on the research of non-linear damping and stiffness, which affect structural response. In the article, the non-linear damping model of bolted-joint interface is built, consisting of viscous damping and Coulomb friction. Energy balancing method is developed to identify the dry-friction parameter and viscous damping factor. The corresponding estimation equations are acquired when the input is harmonic excitation. Then, the vibration experiments with different bolted preloads are conducted, from which amplitudes in various input levels are used to work out the interface parameters. Also, the fitting curves of dry-friction parameters are also obtained. Finally, the results illustrate that the most interface of bolted joint in lower excitation levels occurs stick-slip motion, and the feasibility of the identification approach is demonstrated.

Fluidelastic instability (FEI) produces large amplitude self-excited vibrations close to the natural frequency of the structure. For fluidelastic instability caused by the damping controlled mechanism, there is a time delay between tube motion and the resulting fluid forces but magnitude and physical cause of this is unclear. This study measures the time delay between tube motion and the resulting fluid forces in a normal triangular tube array with a pitch ratio of 1.32 subject to air cross-flow. The instrumented cylinder was forced to oscillate in the lift direction at three excitation frequencies for a range of flow velocities. Unsteady surface pressures were monitored with a sample frequency of 2 kHz at the mid plane of the instrumented cylinder. The instantaneous fluid forces were obtained by integrating the surface pressure data. A time delay between the tube motion and resulting fluid forces was obtained. The nondimensionalized time delay was of the same order of magnitude assumed in the semi-empirical quasi-steady model (i.e., τ2 = 0.29 d/U). Although, further work is required to provide a parameterized model of the time delay which can be embedded in a model of damping controlled fluidelastic forces, the data already provides some insight into the physical mechanism responsible.

This paper presents test results of vibration forces in a normal triangular tube bundle subjected to air-water cross-flow. The dynamic lift and drag forces were measured with strain gage instrumented cylinders. The array has a pitch-to-diameter ratio of 1.5, and the tube diameter is 38 mm. A wide range of void fraction and fluid velocities were tested. The experiments revealed significant forces in both the drag and lift directions. Constant frequency and quasi-periodic fluid forces were found in addition to random excitation. These forces were analyzed and characterized to understand their origins. The forces were found to be dependent on the position of the cylinder within the bundle. The results are compared with those obtained with flexible cylinders in the same tube bundle and to those for a rotated triangular tube bundle. These comparisons reveal the influence of quasi-periodic forces on tube motions.


Low frequency passive towed array sonar is an essential component in a torpedo detection system for surface ships. Compact towed arrays are used for torpedo detection and they will be towed at higher towing speeds compared to conventional towed array sonars used for surveillance. Presence of non-acoustic noise in towed array sensors at higher towing speeds degrades torpedo detection capability at lower frequencies. High wavenumber mechanical vibrations are induced in the array by vortex shedding associated with hydrodynamic flow over the array body and cable scope. These vibrations are known to couple into the hydrophone array as nonacoustic noise sources and can impair acoustic detection performance, particularly in the forward end fire direction. Lengthy mechanical vibration isolation modules can isolate vibration induced noise in towed arrays, but this is not recommended in a towed array which is towed at high speeds as it will increase the drag and system complexity. An algorithm for decomposing acoustic and non-acoustic components of signals received at sensor level using well known frequency-wavenumber transform (F-K transform) is presented here. Frequency-wavenumber diagrams can be used for differentiating between acoustic and non-acoustic signals. An area of V shape is identified within the F-K spectrum where acoustic energy is confined. Energy outside this V will highlight non-acoustic energy. Enhanced simultaneous spatio-temporal and spatio-amplitude detection is possible with this algorithm. Performance of this algorithm is validated through simulation and experimental data.

MR damper (magnetorheological damper) has broad application prospects, and equivalent damping coefficient is very important of its dynamic characteristic analysis. Based on the modified Bouc_Wen model, the performance of MR damper was analyzed and the equivalent linear damping coefficient of MR damper was calculated. Based on simulation date of the modified Bouc_Wen model, the relationships between the equivalent linear damping coefficient of MR damper and the parameters of control voltage and MR dampers movement amplitude were established by the curve fitting regression analysis method. Verification results prove that the equivalent linear damping coefficient model has higher accuracy. For the vibration systems using strongly nonlinear MR damper, new model can effectively improve the efficiency of calculating the vibration analysis and the stability of the system in a certain frequency. At the same time, the model provides a theoretical basis for the application of MR damper control.

Abstract We investigate the nonlinear bending-torsion response of a cantilever beam to a transverse harmonic excitation, where the forcing frequency is near the natural frequency of the first torsional mode. We analyze the case where the first in-plane bending mode is activated by a nonresonant mechanism. We use the method of time-averaged Lagrangian and virtual work to determine the equations governing the modulations of the phases and amplitudes of the interacting modes. These equations are then used to investigate the nonlinear behavior of limit-cycle oscillations of the beam as the excitation amplitude is slowly varied. As an example, we consider the response of an aluminum beam for which the natural frequency of the first in-plane bending mode is fv1 ≈ 5.7 Hz and the natural frequency of the first torsional mode is fϕ1 ≈ 138.9 Hz.

In degraded situations of heat-exchangers, tubes may become loosely supported while subjected to intense crossflow which generates both turbulent and fluid-elastic forces. The vibro-impacting regimes that result have been studied by the authors during these last few years, based on analytical experiments and numerical simulations. Taking advantage of this material, the paper aims at showing some dynamic effects that have been observed and drawing lessons concerning the vibration of tubes under cross-flow when they are linearly unstable. If the fluid-elastic damping drops until the total damping becomes negative when the flow reduced velocity increases, a non-linear gap-system escapes from instability by reinforcing the sequence of impacts and its apparent frequency. On the other hand, the turbulent excitation is characterized by broadband PSDs that decrease with frequency. Thus the vibro-impacting response of the tubes results from a competition between the turbulent and fluid-elastic forces, according to a process that depends on the gap size. The fluid-elastic coupling forces may be either stabilizing (positive damping) or destabilizing (negative one), and, in a more amazing way, the random forces may be dissipative. The paper illustrates the previous points from the tested experimental configuration which was mainly 1-DOF. Dimensionless results are given for this configuration. Extensions to more realistic tubes are discussed from numerical simulations of a straight beam with three loosely supports. The starting point of simulations is though experiments where the fluid-elastic forces would act, but not the turbulent ones, which would produce limit cycles in the phase space. Turbulence is then considered as perturbation of limit cycles, and as shown below by notably introducing a dimensionless “gap-turbulence” parameter, smaller the gap sizes are, larger the relative weight of turbulence is. The Rice frequency and the mean impact force are indicators of this relative weight and the competition between the fluid-forces. From this general understanding, and using preliminary results with the beam model, a few guidelines are finally evoked for determining allowable gaps sizes in degraded situations. But a lot of work has to be done with more sophisticated models to concretize these ideas.

Linear eigenvalue calculations and spatial direct numerical simulations (DNS) of disturbance growth in Falkner–Skan–Cooke (FSC) boundary layers have been performed. The growth rates of the small-amplitude disturbances obtained from the DNS calculations show differences compared to linear local theory, i.e. non-parallel effects are present. With higher amplitude initial disturbances in the DNS calculations, saturated cross-flow vortices are obtained. In these vortices strong shear layers appear. When a small random disturbance is added to a saturated cross-flow vortex, a low-frequency mode is found located at the bottom shear layer of the cross-flow vortex and a high-frequency secondary instability is found at the upper shear layer of the cross-flow vortex. The growth rates of the secondary instabilities are found from detailed analysis of simulations of single-frequency disturbances. The low-frequency disturbance is amplified throughout the domain, but with a lower growth rate than the high-frequency disturbance, which is amplified only once the cross-flow vortices have started to saturate. The high-frequency disturbance has a growth rate that is considerably higher than the growth rates for the primary instabilities, and it is conjectured that the onset of the high-frequency instability is well correlated with the start of transition.

Abstract Pressure differences across topography generate a form drag that opposes the flow in the water column, and viscous and pressure forces acting on roughness elements of the topographic surface generate a frictional drag on the bottom. Form drag and bottom roughness lengths were estimated over the East Flower Garden Bank (EFGB) in the Gulf of Mexico by combining an array of bottom pressure measurements and profiles of velocity and turbulent kinetic dissipation rates. The EFGB is a coral bank about 6 km wide and 10 km long located at the shelf edge that rises from 100-m water depth to about 18 m below the sea surface. The average frictional drag coefficient over the entire bank was estimated as 0.006 using roughness lengths that ranged from 0.001 cm for relatively smooth portions of the bank to 1–10 cm for very rough portions over the corals. The measured form drag over the bank showed multiple time-scale variability. Diurnal tides and low-frequency motions with periods ranging from 4 to 17 days generated form drags of about 2000 N m−1 with average drag coefficients ranging between 0.03 and 0.22, which are a factor of 5–35 times larger than the average frictional drag coefficient. Both linear wave and quadratic drag laws have similarities with the observed form drag. The form drag is an important flow retardation mechanism even in the presence of the large frictional drag associated with coral reefs and requires parameterization.

Two-phase cross flow exists in many shell-and-tube heat exchangers. Flow-induced vibration excitation forces can cause tube motion that will result in long-term fretting wear or fatigue. Detailed flow and vibration excitation force measurements in tube bundles subjected to two-phase cross flow are required to understand the underlying vibration excitation mechanisms. Studies on this subject have already been done, providing results on flow regimes, fluidelastic instabilities, and turbulence-induced vibration. The spectrum of turbulence-induced forces has usually been expected to be similar to that in single-phase flow. However, a recent study, using tubes with a diameter larger than that in a real steam generator, showed the existence of significant quasi-periodic forces in two-phase flow. An experimental program was undertaken with a rotated-triangular array of cylinders subjected to air-water cross-flow, to simulate two-phase mixtures. The tube bundle here has the same geometry as that of a real steam generator. The quasi-periodic forces have now also been observed in this tube bundle. The present work aims to understand turbulence-induced forces acting on the tube bundle, providing results on drag and lift force spectra and their behaviour according to flow parameters, and describing their correlations. Detailed experimental test results are presented in this paper. Comparison is also made with previous measurements with larger diameter tubes. The present results suggest that quasi-periodic fluid forces are not uncommon in tube arrays subjected to two-phase cross-flow.
