The paper presents an extensive analysis of the influence on the suction capacity of the main geometric parameters of gerotor lubricating pumps. The study was carried out using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model developed with the commercial software PumpLinx®. The model of a reference gerotor unit was validated experimentally in terms of delivered flow rate in different operating conditions, in open and closed circuit configuration. In the former case, different geometries of the inlet pipe were tested. In the latter, the influence of the suction pressure at constant speed was analyzed. After the model validation, several geometric features were changed to assess their influence on the volumetric efficiency in conditions of incomplete filling, such as the thickness and the diameter of the gears, the position of the inlet pipe with respect to the rotors (radial, axial, and tangential), and the shape of the port plate.

Zero-dimensional/one-dimensional computational fluid dynamics codes are used to simulate the performance of complete internal combustion engines. In such codes, the operation of a turbocharger compressor is usually addressed employing its performance map. However, simulation of engine transients may drive the compressor to work at operating conditions outside the region provided by the manufacturer map. Therefore, a method is required to extrapolate the performance map to extended off-design conditions. This work examines several extrapolating methods at the different off-design regions, namely, low-pressure ratio zone, low-speed zone and high-speed zone. The accuracy of the methods is assessed with the aid of compressor extreme off-design measurements. In this way, the best method is selected for each region and the manufacturer map is used in design conditions, resulting in a zonal extrapolating approach aiming to preserve accuracy. The transitions between extrapolated zones are corrected, avoiding discontinuities and instabilities.

In high-speed turbomachinery, the presence of rotor vibrations, which produce undesirable noise or shaft deflection and losses in performance, has brought up the need for the application of a proper mechanism to attenuate the vibration amplitudes. Squeeze-film dampers (SFDs) are a widely employed solution to the steady-state vibrations in high-speed turbomachinery. SFDs contain a thin film of lubricant that is susceptible to changes in temperature. For this reason, the analysis of thermohydrodynamic (THD) effects on the SFD damping properties is essential. This paper develops a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to analyze the THD effects in SFDs, and enabling the application of CFD analysis to be a base-line for validating the accuracy of analytical THD SFD models. Specifically, the CFD results are compared against numerical simulations at different operating conditions, including eccentricity ratios and journal whirl speeds. The comparisons demonstrate the effective application of CFD for THD analysis of SFDs. Additionally, the effect of the lubricant THDs on the viscosity, maximum and mass-averaged temperature, as well as heat generation rates inside the SFD lubricant are analyzed. The temperature of the lubricant is seen to rise with increasing whirl speed, eccentricity ratios, damper radial clearance, and shaft radii.

In this article computational fluid dynamics analysis of a three-dimensional compressible and turbulent flow has been carried out through a vortex tube. The standard k-? turbulence model is utilized in order to simulate an axisymmetric computational domain. The numerical simulation has focused on the energy separation and flow field patterns of a somewhat nonconventional vortex tube, which is on the basis of creating an external hole at the end of each nozzle. According to the selected nozzles geometry, some of unfavorable phenomena such as shock wave, high pressure regions and appearing of unsymmetrical rotating flow patterns in the vortex chamber would be recovered significantly. In this way the physical parameters of flow field are derived under different both inlet mass flow rates and outlet pressures of nozzles hole (OPH). The results show that increasing OPH value enhanced the cooling capacity of machine in the most of operating conditions.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods are applied to the analysis of a low-pressure turbine exhaust hood at a typical steam power generating station. A Navier-Stokes solver, capable of modeling all the viscous terms, in a Reynolds-averaged formulation, was used. The work had two major goals. The first was to develop a comprehensive understanding of the complex three-dimensional flow fields that exist in the exhaust hood at representative operating conditions. The second was to evaluate the relative benefits of a flow guide modification to optimize performance at a selected operating condition. Also, the influence of simulated turbine discharge characteristics, relative to uniform hood entrance conditions, was evaluated. The calculations show several interesting and possibly unique results. They support use of an integrated approach to the design of turbine exhaust stage blading and hood geometry for optimum efficiency.

A novel hydraulic rotary high speed on/off valve is investigated. The function of the outlet turbine and the effect on revolution speed of valve spool are analyzed. The inner fluid flow condition under full open case of the on/off valve is simulated using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) method based on Ansys/Fluent and velocity and pressure profiles of fluid inside valve are obtained. Suggestions on optimizing the geometry of valve to decrease transition losses are given.

This paper describes measurement of the aerodynamic pressures produced by a Bombardier High-Speed Non-Electric Locomotive (HSNEL) on an adjacent stationary double-stack freight car. Static pressures are measured on the near and far-side faces of the freight containers over a range of locomotive speeds from 60 to 130 mph. This data is also compared with the pressures predicted by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations.

Hovercraft operates on multi-terrains such as on water surface, on roads, on mud, on non-flat surfaces... it is used popular on the world. With the ability of operating on multi-terrains at high speed, hovercraft is used for many purposes, such as on surveying and rescues missions on areas that are not reachable by normal vehicles, on military missions and traveling... Currently, methods for estimating hovercraft resistance are not accurate enough due to many experiential formulae and coefficients involved during calculating process. This paper presents a method for calculating hovercraft resistance using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools. This research method is used popular and modern research method on the world. The method was applied for calculating resistance of a 7 meters length hovercraft model. The modelling results give us suggestions in selecting engine power and operating speeds for minimizing fuel consumption.

A micronozzle was applied in nanoparticle deposition system (NPDS) for supersonic deposition. To determine whether suitable behavior of supersonic fluid can be produced or not, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) flow analysis was used. Ni particles were successfully deposited using the fabricated micronozzle in NPDS at room temperature. It was found that shorter micronozzle with larger side profile deposits wide and thick film compared to the deposition using long micronozzle with smaller side profile. These experimental results agree with the simulation results.

Abstract: Spoilers have been there in practice since years for the purpose of improving aerodynamics of a car. The pressure drag created at the end of the vehicle, referred to as wake region affects handling of the vehicle. This could be hazardous for the cars at high speeds. By adding a spoiler to the rear of the car reduces that pressure drag and the enhanced downforce helps in better traction. The paper presents aerodynamic analysis of a spoiler through Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis. The spoiler is designed using Onshape software and analyzed through SIMSCALE software. The simulation is carried out by changing angles of attack and velocities. The simulation results of downforce and drag are compared on the basis of analytical method. Keywords: Designing a spoiler, Design and analysis of spoiler, Aerodynamics of spoiler, Aerodynamic analysis of spoiler, Computational fluid dynamics, CFD analysis, CFD analysis of spoiler, Spoiler at variable angles, Types of spoilers, Analytical aerodynamic analysis.
