Abstract In high-temperature transcritical organic Rankine cycles (ORCs), the expansion process may take place in the neighborhood of the thermodynamic critical point. In this region, many organic fluids feature a value of the fundamental derivative of gas dynamics Γ that is less than unity. As a consequence, severe nonideal gas-dynamic effects can be possibly observed. Examples of these nonideal effects are the nonmonotonic variation of the Mach number along an isentropic expansion, oblique shocks featuring an increase of the Mach number, and a significant dependence of the flow field on the upstream total state. To tackle this latter nonideal effect, an uncertainty-quantification strategy combined with Reynolds-averaged flow simulations is devised to evaluate the turbine performance in presence of operational uncertainty. The results clearly indicate that a highly nonideal expansion process leads to an amplification of the operational uncertainty. Specifically, given an uncertainty in the order of 1% in cycle nominal conditions, the mass flow rate and cascade losses vary ±4% and ±0.75 percentage points, respectively. These variations are four and six times larger than those prompted by an ideal-like expansion process. The flow delivered to the first rotating cascade is severely altered as well, leading to local variations in the rotor incidence angle up to 10 deg. A decomposition of variance contributions reveals that the uncertainty in the upstream total temperature is mainly responsible for these variations. Finally, the understanding of the physical mechanism behind these changes allows us to generalize the present findings to other organic-fluid flows.

24 double circular are tandem blade cascades of three different chord-ratios were investigated under different displacements in peripheral and axial direction. The inlet Mach number was 0.3. The Reynolds number based on blade chord was 2.7×105. The characteristics of the tandem blade cascades, such as the dependence of turning angle and coefficient of total pressure loss on incidence angle were obtained. The ranges of main geometrical parameters under optimal conditions were recommended.

The flow in high endwall-angle turbine is complex, and it is different from the ordinary turbine flow in characteristics. In order to study the flow field characteristics of high endwall-angle turbines, the annular sector cascade experimental study of high endwall-angle turbines is carried out. The blade is studied experimentally in the form of annular sector cascade. The cascade includes 7 blades, and makes up 6 flow passages, in order to simulate full cascade flow. The experimental Mach number is adjusted by the way of changing inlet total pressure, and the Mach number influence (0.7, 0.8 and 0.9) on annular sector cascade flow is studied. Based on it, the inlet incidence angle (−15°, −7.5°, 0°, 7.5° and 15° )is changed with the way of changing sector straight pipes upstream of the cascade, and its influence on turbine flow fields is studied at the Mach number of 0.8. Here, five-hole probes are used to measure aerodynamic parameters distributions downstream of the cascade, and static pressure taps are positioned on the blade surface to measure surface static pressure distribution. The auto-traversing system and pressure sensors were operated by a self-compiled program based control program. The results indicate that there are two passage vortices inside the turbine cascade flow passage under the high Mach number condition, and the passage vortex near the high endwall-angle region is bigger. As Mach number increases, the passage vortices inside turbine cascade passage will become strong, and moves towards the blade mid-span. Besides, it is shown that the way of changing sector straight pipes can achieve the variation of inlet incidence angles. And, the blade profile with big leading-edge radius has good design and off-design performance. Detailed results and analyses are presented in the paper.

The trilateral flash cycle shows a greater potentiality in moderate to low grade heat utilization systems due to its potentiality of obtaining high exergy efficiency, compared to the conventional thermodynamic cycles such as the organic Rankine cycles and the Kalina cycle. The main difference between the trilateral flash cycle and the conventional thermodynamic cycles is that the superheated vapor expansion process is replaced by the two-phase expansion process. The two-phase expansion process actually consists of a flashing of the inlet stream into a vapor and a liquid phase. Most simulations assume an equilibrium model with an instantaneous flashing. Yet, the experiments of pool flashing indicate that there is a flash evaporating rate. The mechanism of this process still remains unclear. In this paper, the flash evaporating rate is introduced into the model of the two-phase expansion process in the reciprocating expander with a cyclone separator. As such, the obtained results reveal the influence of evaporating rate on the efficiency of the two-phase expander.

Flush-mounted dynamic pressure transducers were installed on the center airfoil of a transonic oscillating cascade to measure the unsteady aerodynamic response as nine airfoils were simultaneously driven to provide 1.2 deg of pitching motion about the midchord. Initial tests were performed at an incidence angle of 0.0 deg and a Mach number of 0.65 in order to obtain results in a shock-free compressible flow field. Subsequent tests were performed at an angle of attack of 7.0 deg and a Mach number of 0.80 in order to observe the surface pressure response with an oscillating shock near the leading edge of the airfoil. Results are presented for interblade phase angles of 90 and −90 deg and at blade oscillatory frequencies of 200 and 500 Hz (semichord reduced frequencies up to about 0.5 at a Mach number of 0.80). Results from the zero-incidence cascade are compared with a classical unsteady flat-plate analysis. Flow visualization results depicting the shock motion on the airfoils in the high-incidence cascade are discussed. The airfoil pressure data are tabulated.

The article presents the methodology of determining the basic aerodynamic characteristics using the Fluent theoretical method and the theoretical and experimental method using the Prodas program. Presented calculations were made for a 122 mm non-guided missile. In order to compare both methods, the results of calculations of coefficient of drag force, lift force coefficient and pitching moment coefficient as a function of incidence angle of attack and Mach number are shown in graphs.

This paper presents an optimization of Organic Rankine Cycles "ORC" using dry organic fluids, to convert waste energy to power from low grade heat sources. The dry organic working fluids under investigation are R113, R245ca, R123, and Isobutene. Different configurations such as reheat ORC and regenerative ORC will be analyzed and compared with the basic ORC in order to determine the configuration that presents the best performance. The optimization for the different configurations will be performed using a combined first and second law analysis by varying some system operating parameters at various reference temperatures and pressures. Some of the results show that regenerative ORC produces higher efficiency compared with the basic ORC while also reducing the amount of waste heat needed to produce the same power with a less irreversibility.

A method for treating nonideal gas flows through converging-diverging nozzles is described. The method incorporates the Redlich-Kwong equation of state. The Runge-Kutta method is used to obtain a solution. Numerical results were obtained for methane gas. Typical plots of pressure, temperature, and area ratios as functions of Mach number are given. From the plots, it can be seen that there exists a range of reservoir conditions that require the gas to be treated as nonideal if an accurate solution is to be obtained.
