The mixing of coolant air jets with the hot gas exiting the primary zone is of major importance to the combustor exit temperature profile. Geometry and momentum flux ratios are the dominant parameters. A theoretical and experimental study of single as well as opposite wall jet injection into a hot cross flow reveals the applicability and limitations of existing correlations. Modified correlations are presented for opposite wall injection with jets of different momentum flux ratios. The advantages in applying field methods for describing the flow are discussed.

This research is motivated towards improving and optimizing the performance of AFRL’s Inter-Turbine Burner (ITB) in terms of greater combustion efficiency, reduced losses and exit temperature profile requirements. The ITB is a minicombustor concept, situated in between the high and low pressure turbine stages and typically contains multiple fueled and non-fueled Trapped Vortex Combustor (TVC) cavities. The size, placement, and arrangement of these cavities have tremendous effect on the combustor exit temperature profile. The detailed understanding of the effect of these cavities in a three-dimensional ITB configuration would be very difficult and computationally prohibited. Therefore, a simple but somewhat similar conceptual axi-symmetric burner is used here the design variations of Trapped Vortex Combustor (TVC) through modeling and simulation. The TVC can be one single cavity or can be represented by multi-cavity combustor. In this paper, both single cavity TVC and multi-cavity TVCs are studied. The single cavity TVC is divided into multiple cavities while the total volume of the combustor remains constant. Four combustors are studied: Baseline, Staged, Three-Staged, and Interdigitated TVC. An extensive computational investigation on the characteristics of these multi-cavity TVCs is presented. FLUENT is used for modeling the axisymmetric reacting flow past cavities using a global eddy dissipation mechanism for C3H8-air combustion with detailed thermodynamic and transport properties. Calculations are performed using Standard, RNG, and Realizable k-ε RANS turbulence models. The numerical results are validated against experimental temperature measurements on the Base TVC. Results indicate that the pressure drag is the major contributor to total drag in the Base TVC. However, viscous drag is still significant. By adding a concentric cavity in sequential manner (i.e. Staged TVC), the pressure drag decreases, whereas the viscous drag remains nearly constant. Further addition of a secondary concentric cavity (i.e. Three-Staged TVC), the total drag does not further decrease and both pressure and viscous drag contributions do not change. If instead a non-concentric cavity is added to the Base TVC (i.e. Interdigitated TVC), the pressure drag increases while the viscous drag decreases slightly. The effect of adding swirl flow is to increase the fuel-air mixing and as a result, it increases the maximum exit temperature for all the combustors modeled. The jets and heat release contribute to increase pressure drag with the former being greater. The fuel and air jets and heat release also modify the cavity flow structure. By turning off the fuel and air jets in the Staged TVC, lower drag (or pressure loss) and exit temperature are achieved. It is more effective to turn off the fuel and air jets in the upstream (front) cavity in order to reduce pressure losses. Based on these results, recommendations are provided to the engineer/designer/modeler to improve the performance of the ITB.

The combustion chamber of aircraft engines plays an important role in achieving the optimum performance during an engine overhaul. For long decades, it has been common understanding in the MRO business that a well overhauled compressor and turbine are required to get an engine with low SFC and high EGT margin. In recent work at Lufthansa Technik AG, a comprehensive CFD analysis of the combustion chamber showed that, in contrast to this, small geometrical features influence the mixing process in the combustion chamber and can have an effect on the exit temperature profile. This in turn can reduce the accuracy of the EGT measurement significantly and create measurement errors and misinterpretations of the real engine performance. In order to get insight into the flow topology, a very detailed digital model has been created using scans of the hardware available in the shop. Important geometrical features such as the cooling provisions and swirl creating components have been included in a very detailed manner with an efficient hexahedral mesh. The model includes the HPT vanes and the cooling flow extraction from the secondary cold flow. CFD results have been generated using the flow solver Ansys CFX 17.1, which is able to predict all relevant physical effects such as injection of liquid fuel, evaporation, and combustion of Jet A1 fuel using the Burning-Velocity combustion model. The flow in the combustion chamber shows large natural fluctuations. Subsequently, for each case a transient calculation has been carried out in order to allow an evaluation of the time-averaged flow field. Different geometrical features are investigated to predict the effect of geometry deviations on the exit temperature profile, e.g. the shape and size of the dilution holes. Finally along the example of two CFM56 engines it will be shown how the data obtained by the detailed CFD model is used to optimize work-scoping and maintenance procedures. On the two cases put forward the combination of extended test-cell instrumentation and detailed modeling enabled not only the identification but also the rectification of combustion chamber deviations. This in turn minimized the necessary work, whereas in the past combustion chamber issues often went unnoticed and consequently resulted in extensive additional work.

Cross flow fuel injection is a widely used approach for injecting liquid fuel in gas turbine combustors and afterburners due to the higher penetration and rapid mixing of fuel and the cross flowing airstream. Because of the very limited residence time available in these combustors it is essential to ensure that smaller drop sizes are generated within a short axial distance from the injector in order to promote effective mixing. This requirement calls for detailed investigations into spray characteristics of different injector configurations in a cross-flow environment for identifying promising configurations. The drop size characteristics of a liquid jet issuing from a forward angled injector into a cross-flow of air were investigated experimentally at conditions relevant to gas turbine afterburners. A rig was designed and fabricated to investigate the injection of liquid jet in subsonic cross-flow with a rectangular test section of cross section measuring 50 mm by 70 mm. Experiments were done with a 10 degree forward angled 0.8 mm diameter plain orifice nozzle which was flush mounted on the bottom plate of test section. Laser diffraction using Malvern Spraytec particle analyzer was used to measure drops size and distributions in the near field of the spray. Measurements were performed at a distance of 70 mm from the injector at various locations along the height of the spray plume for a reasonable range of liquid flow rates as in practical devices. The sprays were characterized using the non dimensional parameters such as the Weber number and the momentum flux ratio and drop sizes were measured at three locations along the height of the spray from the bottom wall. The momentum flux ratio was varied from 5 to 25. Results indicate that with increase in momentum flux ratio the SMD reduced at the specific locations and an higher overall SMD was observed as one goes from the bottom to the top of the spray plume. This was accompanied by a narrowing of the drop size distribution.

Improvement of the lean blowout limit and more uniform combustor exit temperature distribution are particularly desirable for future aero engine. A triple swirler combination plus an airblast fuel injector might be a promising solution. The design with the triple swirler plus the airblast fuel injector including design A and B was presented and investigated in this paper. Single rectangle sector module combustor was used in the experiment for lean blowout (LBO), and three cups rectangle sector combustor was used for pattern factor (PF) experiments. The LBO and PF experiment data were provided. The primary zone flow field was measured by PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) under atmospheric pressure and temperature. The result showed that the design A was a promising design, and the primary jet played very important role for flow field of primary zone. The insight relation between flow field and combustion performance could be found out from this paper.

In this research work the potential of rich quench lean combustion for low emission aeroengines is investigated in a rectangular atmospheric sector, representing a segment of an annular combustor. For a constant design point (cruise) the mixing process and the NOx formation are studied in detail by concentration, temperature and velocity measurements using intrusive and non-intrusive measuring techniques. Measurements at the exit of the homogeneous primary zone show relatively high levels of non-thermal NO. The NOx formation in the quench zone is very low due to the quick mixing of the secondary air achieved by an adequate penetration of the secondary air jets and a high turbulence level. The NOx and CO emissions at the combustor exit are low and the pattern factor of the temperature distribution is sufficient.

Successful NOx measurements at the end of the primary zone of a small tubular combustor of conventional gas turbine design, employing acoustically controlled primary zone air-jet mixing processes, have been made at scaled 1/4 and 1/8 load operating conditions. Testing at 1/8 load significantly increased the effective strength of the acoustic drive, which strongly improved the mixing by the acoustically driven primary zone air-jets. The acoustic drive caused partial blockage of the combustor primary zone airflow. This increased the equivalence ratio and the gas temperature, and made the gas temperature distribution more uniform, except for lean conditions at 1/8 load, in the plane of the NOx measurements. This explained the measured greater NOx “with-drive,” and the distinctly more uniform NOx distribution, which confirmed that mixing was acoustically augmented. The acoustically produced changes were greater at 1/8 load. The acoustic drive significantly changed the combustor operating characteristic so far as mean NOx was concerned, and under lean conditions at 1/8 load mean NOx was reduced, indicating that a value of 10 ppm is possible (a 50 percent reduction).

Abstract This paper presents the experimental analysis of the impact of swirl number of cross-flowing air stream on liquid jet spray trajectory at a fixed air flow velocity of 42 m/s with the corresponding Mach number of 0.12. The experiments were conducted for 4 different swirl numbers (0, 0.2, 0.42 and 0.73) using swirl vanes at air inlet having angles of 0°, 15°, 30° and 45° respectively. Liquid to air momentum flux ratio (q) was varied from 5 to 25. High speed (@ 500 fps) images of the spray were captured and those images were processed using MATLAB to obtain the path of the spray at various momentum flux ratios. The results show interesting trends for the spray trajectory and the jet spread in swirling air flow. High swirling flows not only lead to spray with lower radial penetration due to sharp bending and disintegration of liquid jet, but also result in spray with high jet spread and spray area. Based on the results, correlations for the spray path have been proposed which incorporates the effects of the swirl number of the air flow.

This paper reports a computational study using CFD on a hot gas filter in cross flow arrangement. The filter generally operates with the dirty gases passing through the filter elements, the particulate material being deposited on the outside of the filter. However, in power co-generation plants, hot gas filtration is needed to allow the hot exhaust gases to be fed to a turbine without causing any physical damage to the blades. The aim of this work is to increase understanding of the deposition process and the factors that affect the build up of the filter cake. A parametric investigation is undertaken with particular emphasis on the effects of the ratio of the approach cross flow velocity to filter face velocity on the deposition pattern as a function of the particle size (1 to 100 microns). Velocity fields and particle tracks are presented, in addition to the radius of convergence which is a parameter that characterizes the deposition process for each flow regime.
