A general description of a small engine high temperature research vehicle is presented along with other aspects of the associated programme directed primarily towards the investigation of an air cooled turbine system. The general philosophy and style of the programme is discussed and comparisons made with alternative approaches. The instrumentation used is detailed along with a brief review of the test facility and data retrieval system. The presentation of engine design features and results is limited due to the classified nature of the work. The project is reviewed in the light of the 5 years test experience gained.

The advantages of re-engining the F-14 aircraft with the F110 engine is presented. The areas of improvement and the engine development philosophy are explained. A summary description of the pertinent engine design features of the F110 are presented. The flight test results on inlet/engine compatability, afterburner operation, airplane performance, and maintainability/reliability/durability are interpreted. Finally, a description of the proposed version of the F110 engine for the F-14 is presented.

Bibliographic data contains necessary information about literature to help users to recognize and retrieve that resource. These data are used quantitatively by a “Bibliometrician” for analysis and dissemination purpose but with the increasing rate of literature publication in open access journals such as Nucleic Acids Research (NAR), Springer, Oxford Journals etc., it has become difficult to retrieve structured bibliographic information in desired format. A digital bibliographic database contains necessary and structured information about published literature. Bibliographic records of different articles are scattered and resides on different web pages. This thesis presents the retrieval system for bibliographic data of NAR at a single place. For this purpose, parser agents have been developed which access the web pages of NAR and parse the scattered bibliographic data and finally store it into a local bibliographic database. Based on the bibliographic database, “three-tier architecture” has been utilized to display the bibliographic information in systematized format. Using this system, it would be possible to build the network between different authors and affiliations and also other analytical reports can be generated.

NYU has an ongoing research program which is being funded by DOE to test three types of high-pressure, high-temperature filters. The main objectives of the testing program are: (1) to establish the performance capability of the filters under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions; and (2) to evaluate the dust collection efficiency. Shakedown tests for a duration of about 50 hours was completed during October 1986. Testing of the electrostatic precipitator (ESP) is in progress. The first test with ESP was performed during the middle of November 1986. The operating experience with respect to the test facility, and in particular with the particulate sampling systems, is reported in this paper. Additionally, some test results are also discussed.

Researchers and materials engineers require a greater understanding of the problems and solutions that emerge when integrating composite materials data with computer technology so that utilitarian composite materials databases can be developed to effectively and efficiently support analysis and design software. This paper primarily serves to analyze several of the problems facing developers of composite materials databases, evolving from the complexity of the materials themselves and from the current lack of testing and data representation standards. Without a clear understanding of the scope and nature of these problems, there is no possibility of designing concise yet comprehensive composites data models, yet we feel that such an understanding is presently lacking.

ALSTOM is developing and testing a new and more efficient coal combustion technology, including a new type of steam generator known as a “circulating moving bed (CMBTM) combustion system combustor.” The CMBTM combustion system technology involves a novel method of solid fuel combustion and heat transfer. In this design, a heat exchanger will heat the energy cycle working fluid, steam or air, to the high temperature levels required for advanced power generation systems. This will produce a step change in both performance and capital costs relative to today’s pulverized coal and fluid bed boiler designs. In addition to high temperature Rankine cycles, the CMBTM combustion system is an enabling technology for hydrogen production and CO2 capture from combustion systems utilizing innovative chemical looping airblown gasification and syngas decarbonization. ALSTOM’s 3MWth Multi-Use Combustion Test Facility has been modified to allow operation in CMBTM combustion system mode. This paper summarizes the results of this program, which includes performance results from pilot plant testing. Participants include the U.S. DOE, ALSTOM, the University of Massachusetts, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The total program cost is $2,485,468 with the DOE’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) providing 60% of the funding under Cooperative Agreement No. DE-FC26-01NT41223.
