Figure 1. Over the years, Schmidt has paid special attention to improvements in processes for concentration and aroma recovery of fruit and vegetable juices. Our new technology was introduced in a symposium on the 26th of January 1983 in Bretten, West Germany, namely: - the new SigmaStar™ evaporator (for which we received a US patent in 1986) - new techniques for aroma recovery - new energy saving methods for multi-effect evaporation in combination with aroma recovery. We will describe and explain the new SigmaStar™ evaporator, the new aroma recovery plant as well as the integrated plant. Thereafter we will report our experiences, the quality of the final products, both aroma and concentrate, and improvements that have been developed over the years. Paper published with permission.

According to United Nations data, half of the world’s population lives in cities and forecasts indicate that by the middle of the 21st century, this percentage will have increased to 65%. The increase in the urban population favors the creation of a network of interactions that entails a series of material and energy flows. These cause environmental impacts that affect the quality of life of citizens and the environment as a whole. According to data from the International Energy Agency, cities occupy 3% of the planet’s surface and are responsible for 67% of global energy consumption. The effects caused by this consumption, as well as its impact on the depletion of resources, make it necessary to carry out an exhaustive study of renewable energies and new energy saving systems. This Special Issue aims to present new advances and developments in renewable energy and energy saving systems that allow cities to evolve in a sustainable way.

Building Energy Conservation, especially the research about residential building energy in face of the worldwide energy crisis is particularly urgent. At present, various countries have an in-depth study of the residential building energy to explore different methods, new building materials, and new technology(such as new thermal windows and doors), as well as the use of new energy has been put more attention to in energy conservation field. Comparing the residential buildings between domestic and overseas countries’ progress about related technologies, we could find some evolution and look to the prospects for the future in energy-saving field. We took a domestic project that used energy-saving technology as a practical example, and then made a simple overview of the current energy situation in China so as to get a glimpse of the development about residential building energy-saving. Finally, the article provided some comments about this topic in sustainable view.

Reclamation and application of sewage heat energy is a good choice for sustainable development and an effective mean of energy-saving and output-reducing. By analyzing the capacity, temperature and quality of sewage of Guiyang, we obtained the basic conditions for the application of sewage heat energy in Guiyang. The results showed that the sewage of Guiyang was resourceful, and have occurrence of large amount of cold (hot) energy. There was an obvious temperature difference between sewage temperature and atmosphere temperature. Sewage was lightly corrosive. The application conditions of sewage heat energy were suitable. Sewage heat is a clean energy which is easy to recycle. Three factors, including capacity, temperature and quality of sewage, are considered if sewage heat energy was applied. 3 factors of 10 sewage treatment plants and their subsidiary pipe network in Guiyang were monitored and analyzed to verify the application conditions of sewage heat energy in Guiyang. From the perspective of energy-saving and output-reducing, an effective way is explored to develop new energy sources in Guiyang[1,2].

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is considered as one of the most important food crops all over the world. Because of the improvement of the actual living standards, there is more and more demand for improved grain quality. Although, the grain quality is a very complex quantitative trait in rice, it has great scientific significance and practical application value for the improvement of the quality of rice grain using high and up to date techniques. Here, we focus on the new advances in the application of the genetic improvement of grain quality by high throughput sequencing, genomic editing, near infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and other new techniques. Simultaneously, the application prospects of these high and up to date techniques have also been expected in the genetic improvement of rice quality. Thus, this will provide important information for genetic improvement of grain quality in rice breeding.

AbstractA new industrial revolution is on the verge in the energy domain considering the knowledge and skills acquired through the development of new energy technologies. Shale gas processing, unconventional oil exploitation, new exploring/drilling methods, mature renewable energy or in progress, all generated a wealth of knowledge in new technology. Therefore, this paper aims to analyse the positive and negative aspects of energy solutions, and to reveal the way to a world where a valid sustainable development, based on safe and rational premises, is actually considered. The paper also introduces suggestions for the energy system, which has a crucial importance in coping with the resource management of the future, where the economic, social, and environmental/climate needs of the post-crisis world should be suitably considered.
