Abstract Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (PMSMs) have been preferred for high-performance applications due to their high torque density, high power density, high control accuracy, and high efficiency over a wide operating range. During operation, monitoring the PMSM’s health condition is crucial for detecting any anomalies so that performance degradation, maintenance/downtime costs, and safety hazards can be avoided. In particular, demagnetization of PMSMs can lead to not only degraded performance but also high maintenance cost as they are the most expensive components in a PMSM. In this paper, an equivalent two-phase model for surface-mount permanent magnet (SMPM) machines under permanent magnet demagnetization is formulated and a parameter estimator is proposed for condition monitoring purposes. The performance of the proposed estimator is investigated through analysis and simulation under different conditions, and compared with a parameter estimator based on the standard SMPM machine model. In terms of information that can be extracted for fault diagnosis and condition monitoring, the proposed estimator exhibits advantages over the standard-model-based estimator as it can differentiate between uniform demagnetization over all poles and asymmetric demagnetization between north and south poles.

Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are increasingly used in high performance variable speed drives of many industrial applications. PMSM has many features, like high efficiency, compactness, high torque to inertia ratio, rapid dynamic response, simple modeling and control, and maintenance free operation. Presence of position sensors presents several disadvantages, such as reduced reliability, susceptibility to noise, additional cost and weight and increased complexity of the drive system. For these reasons, the development of alternative indirect methods for speed and position control becomes an important research topic. Advantages of sensorless control are reduced hardware complexity, low cost, reduced size, cable elimination, increased noise immunity, increased reliability and decreased maintenance. The key problem in sensorless vector control of ac drives is the accurate dynamic estimation of the stator flux vector over a wide speed range using only terminal variables (currents and voltages). The difficulty comprises state estimation at very low speeds where the fundamental excitation is low and the observer performance tends to be poor. Moreover, the noises of system and measurements are considered other main problems. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the different sliding mode observer methods of speed and position estimations for sensorless control of PMSM drives.

Bearingless permanent magnet synchronous motor (BPMSM) combines the characteristic of the conventional permanent magent synchronous motor and magnetic bearing in one electric motor. BPMSM is a kind of high performance motor due to having both advantages of PMSM and magnetic bearing with simple structure, high efficiency, and reasonable cost. The research on BPMSM is to design and analyse BPMSM by using Maxwell 2-Dimensional of ANSYS Finite Element Method (FEM). Independent suspension force model and bearingless PMSM model are developed by using the method of suspension force. Then, the mathematical model of electromagnetic torque and radial suspension force has been developed by using Matlab/Simulink. The relation between force, current, distance and other parameter are determined. This research covered the principle of suspension force, the mathematical model, FEM analysis and digital control system of bearingless PMSM. This kind of motor is widely used in high speed application such as compressors, pumps and turbines.

This paper overviews high-speed permanent magnet (HSPM) machines, accounting for stator structures, winding configurations, rotor constructions, and parasitic effects. Firstly, single-phase and three-phase PM machines are introduced for high-speed applications. Secondly, for three-phase HSPM machines, applications, advantages, and disadvantages of slotted/slotless stator structures, non-overlapping/overlapping winding configurations, different rotor constructions, i.e., interior PM (IPM), surface-mounted PM (SPM), and solid PM, are summarised in detail. Thirdly, parasitic effects due to high-speed operation are presented, including various loss components, rotor dynamic and vibration, and thermal aspects. Overall, three-phase PM machines have no self-starting issues, and exhibit high power density, high efficiency, high critical speed, together with low vibration and noise, which make them a preferred choice for high-performance, high-speed applications.

Permanent magnet synchronous motors(PMSM) as a representative of high efficiency motor was being used widely in the area of medium and small-sized power, high-accuracy,high reliability and wide-scope speed governing servo system.Otherwise, because traditional PI controller can not satisfy the high-performance of PMSM servo system,Fuzzy self-tuning PI(Fuzzy-PI) control method was used in this system, and proportion and integral parameter of PI controller is optimized by fuzzy logic.By simulation experiment, it was proved that Fuzzy-PI method had more steady and less q-axis current pulse to PI control in the transition procedure of PMSM governing.

Abstract. Power dissipation besides chip area is still one main optimization issue in high performance CMOS design. Regarding high throughput building blocks for digital signal processing architectures which are optimized down to the physical level a complementary two-phase clocking scheme (CTPC) is often advantageous concerning ATE-efficiency. The clock system dissipates a significant part of overall power up to more than 50% in some applications. One efficient power saving strategy for CTPC signal generation is the charge balancing technique. To achieve high efficiency with this approach a careful optimization of timing relations within the control is inevitable. However, as in modern CMOS processes device variations increase, timing relations between sensitive control signals can be affected seriously. In order to compensate for the influence of global and local variations in this work, an adaptive control system for charge balancing in a CTPC generator is presented. An adjustment for the degree of charge recycling is performed in each clock cycle. In the case of insufficient recycling the delay elements which define duration and timing position of the recycling pulse are corrected by switchable timing units. In a benchmark with the conventional clock generation system, a power reduction gain of up to 24.7% could be achieved. This means saving in power of more than 12% for a complete number-crunching building block.

A high performance Nd2Fe14B/Ta thin film Permanent Magnet (PM) not only has a high remnant flux density and a high coercive force similar to those of a conventional sintered Nd2Fe14B magnet, but also has a high heat tolerance. Using a thin film PM, we developed a moving-magnet typeMEMS linearmotor consisting of a silicon slider including a multi-pole magnetized thin film PM, a linear guideway made from silicon, and a two-phase micro-coil. Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coatings were used in order to reduce the friction force between the slider and the guideway. The purpose of this study is to realize feedback positioning of the MEMS linear motor and to investigate the dynamics of the linear motor system. In a driving experiment, the minimum current and voltage to start the slider were less than 0.26 A and 0.6 V, respectively. In positioning tests, the positioning resolution and bandwidth were 100 µm and 54 Hz, respectively.

The application of line-start permanent magnet synchronous motors (LSPMSMs) is rapidly spreading due to their advantages of high efficiency, high operational power factor, being self-starting, rendering them as highly needed in many applications in recent years. Although there have been standard methods for the identification of parameters of synchronous and induction machines, most of them do not apply to LSPMSMs. This paper presents a study and analysis of different parameter identification methods for interior mount LSPMSM. Experimental tests have been performed in the laboratory on a 1-hp interior mount LSPMSM. The measurements have been validated by investigating the performance of the machine under different operating conditions using a developed qd0 mathematical model and an experimental setup. The dynamic and steady-state performance analyses have been performed using the determined parameters. It is found that the experimental results are close to the mathematical model results, confirming the accuracy of the studied test methods. Therefore, the output of this study will help in selecting the proper test method for LSPMSM.
