Numerical analysis of two passive solar desalination designs, the traditional pool evaporation design and the proposed tray design are performed. The significance of common assumption for the pool evaporation design that neglect the mass balance and psychrometric relationships for the air-water vapor volume were investigated and found that neglecting this component results in over predicting the freshwater production by 32.6% and 19.5% for the summer and winter design day, respectively. It was also found that the tray design produced 31.3 % and 7% more freshwater per summer and winter design day, respectively. These results support the need to include all physical components in the numerical simulation. The results also support the tray design as producing significantly more freshwater for the same input.

In this article, we present the numerical analysis of a Free Standing Riser. The numerical simulation was carried out using a commercial riser analysis software suit. The numerical model’s dimensions were the same of a 1/70 reduced scale model deployed in a previous experiment. The numerical results were compared with experimental results presented in a previous article [1]. Discussion about the model and limitations of the numerical analysis is included.

Numerical simulation of vibro-stone column is taken to simulate the installation of vibro-stone column. A relationship based on test is adopted to calculate the excess pore pressure induced by vibratory energy during the installation of vibro-stone column. A numerical procedure is developed based on the formula and Terzaghi-Renduric consolidation theory. Finally numerical results of composite stone column are compared single stone column.

Based on an Engineering Example which was supported by the stepped soil-nail wall, a numerical analysis model was established by FLAC3D,and the process of the excavation and supporting was simulated, and the numerical results of the soil nails internal force and foundation pit deformation were obtained. The simulated result was consistent with the measured results. It shows that the method of FLAC3D numerical analysis can be used to the numerical analysis of foundation pit excavation and supporting, and it will provide the basis for the design and construction of practice project.

In the present study, the synthetic signals from the combo tube are simulated by using commercial electromagnetic numerical analysis software which has been developed based on a volume integral method. A comparison of the simulated signals to the experiments is made for the verification of accuracy, and then evaluation of five deliberated single circumferential indication signals is performed to explore a possibility of using a numerical simulation as a practical calibration tool. The good agreement between the evaluation results for two cases (calibration done by experiments and calibration made by simulation) demonstrates such a high possibility.

The current researches on bolt length are rarely concerned with self-bearing characteristics of anchorage surrounding rock, its stress response is seldom used to analyze the bolt effective length. Tangential stress σθ of surrounding rock is sensitive to mechanical variation of surrounding rock plastic failure fields. When surrounding rock bolted, the distribution curve of σθ presents internal and external peak values from the surface rock to the deep rock, which is verified by numerical simulation. Internal peak value of σθ curve increases with the bolt length, which means the bearing capacity of surrounding rock in plastic failure division is improved, correspondingly, external peak value decreases which shows the supporting behavior of the deep rock is weakened. The results of numerical simulations prove that there exists an effective value of bolt length. If bolt length beyond it, the bearing capacity of anchorage surrounding rock cannot be improved obviously.

Abstract As an indispensable part of transportation system, urban underpass can alleviate traffic congestion and reduce traffic accidents effectively. In order to acquaint the hydrodynamics of shockwave in underpass and assess the potential damage and risk of bombing accidents, a numerical simulation was established to calculate the blast effects originating from the 13Kg TNT. Based on the location of detonation point, the shape of corridor section and the exit's cover, peak pressure distributions were predicted. The results indicate that the propagation of shockwave in horizontal direction switches to the inclined top of ground in a near-field due to the ground reflection and the set of exit's cover increases the risk of explosion to the structure and the users.
