Three-Dimension Thermal Hydraulic Analysis of Stationary Target Plate for Highly Intensified Neutron Generator (HINEG)

Highly intensified neutron generator (HINEG) is a D-T neutron generator tritium target system; it can be used in researching fusion energy and advanced fission energy. The heat flux at the target plate is extraordinarily high, cooling the target plate effectively, limiting the working temperature, are the keys to keep the normal working of HINEG. This paper has simulated the 3D values of some different kind of target plate systems, using the computational fluid dynamics software and static analysis software, presented the stationary analysis results of temperature and fluid fields, as well as stress field. The flow and temperature distributions provide important data for advanced design and performance evaluation of HINEG.

By using through-silicon-vias (TSV), three dimension integration technology can stack large memory on the top of cores as a last-level on-chip cache (LLC) to reduce off-chip memory access and enhance system performance. However, the integration of more on-chip caches increases chip power density, which might lead to temperature-related issues in power consumption, reliability, cooling cost, and performance. An effective thermal management scheme is required to ensure the performance and reliability of the system. In this study, a fuzzy-based thermal management scheme (FBTM) is proposed that simultaneously considers cores and stacked caches. The proposed method combines a dynamic cache reconfiguration scheme with a fuzzy-based control policy in a temperature-aware manner. The dynamic cache reconfiguration scheme determines the size of the cache for the processor core according to the application that reaches a substantial amount of power consumption savings. The fuzzy-based control policy is used to change the frequency level of the processor core based on dynamic cache reconfiguration, a process which can further improve the system performance. Experiments show that, compared with other thermal management schemes, the proposed FBTM can achieve, on average, 3 degrees of reduction in temperature and a 41% reduction of leakage energy.

PurposeThe purpose of the paper is to present a novel cross-modal sensor whose tactile is computed by the visual information. The proposed sensor can measure the forces of robotic grasping.Design/methodology/approachThe proposed cross-modal tactile sensor consists of a transparent elastomer with markers, a camera, an LED circuit board and supporting structures. The model and performance of the elastomer are analyzed. Then marker recognition method is proposed to determine the movements of the marker on the surface, and the force calculation algorithm is presented to compute the three-dimension force.FindingsExperimental results demonstrate that the proposed tactile sensor can accurately measure robotic grasping forces.Originality/valueThe proposed cross-modal tactile sensor determines the robotic grasping forces by the images of markers. It can give more information of the force than traditional tactile sensors. Meanwhile, the proposed algorithms for forces calculation determine the superior results.

A new solid target system for the TRIUMF TR13 cyclotron that can accommodate target discs with a 1-2-mm thickness and a 28-mm diameter has been developed. The target system design is based on a modified clamping mechanism of a KF-40 vacuum connector, and comprises an easy and quick ejection mechanism for the target plate. The new quick-release target system decreases the retrieval time of the irradiated target to less than 1 minute and is expected to reduce the radiation burden to operating staff by a factor of ~10.

Commercial finite element modeling software ANSYS was used to calculate the stress distributions of diamond pick at different loads. The three-dimension model of the pick was built and the direction and magnitude of load were varied to determine their effect on the stress distributions of diamond pick. The results show that the stresses located on the pick increase with the increasing of the normal and lateral pressure, and if the maximum normal pressure and lateral pressure are not higher than 480 kN and 150 kN, respectively, the diamond pick will not be damaged. The results obtained can provide available data for pick selection, design and performance.

Since the 1960s, researchers have been reporting that stress reduces Stroop interference. This is puzzling, as stress and anxiety typically have deleterious effects on cognitive control and performance. The traditional explanation is that stress reduces “cue utilisation”: It withdraws attentional resources from less relevant stimuli (including the distracter word), meaning that the target colour is left with a stronger influence over response selection. However, it could also be that stress somehow boosts distracter inhibition, or some other aspect of executive control. To test these two accounts, 59 students completed a Stroop task featuring occasional startlingly loud sounds (high stress) or the same sounds at a lower, comfortable volume (low stress). Alongside standard Stroop interference, two measures of executive control—negative priming and conflict adaptation—were calculated from the Stroop data. Stress produced a clear reduction of Stroop interference, but it did not influence negative priming, and no conflict adaptation effects were detected at all. These findings support the cue utilisation account. Furthermore, for the first time, stress was shown to reduce Stroop interference in a task with no congruent trials, showing that the effect does not result from stress’s modulating any strategy changes participants might make in response to congruent trials.

Taking the air intake pipe in the engine as the target of the research, the software STAR-CDE is adopted to build a three-dimensional simulation model for the air intake pipe in the engine T12V190 with the aim to solve the problems of air input deficiency, Combustion deterioration and performance reduction of one cylinder caused by the non-uniformity. Moreover, the non-uniformity of the flux of air intake of the air intake pipe is mainly studied and analyzed through a calculation on the CFD of the inner flow field of the three dimension of the air intake pipe in the engine T12V190. In addition, a retrofit design with multiple schemes is made based on the cavity structure of the original mold for the air intake pipe. Finally, through a comparison among the three selected designs, a more feasible retrofit designing scheme and a designing thought on the air intake pipe in the engine with directional significance are got.

Digital image correlation (DIC) has become an industry staple quickly replacing classic techniques. High-speed images are taken of a material sample being deformed, then algorithms applied to calculate variables of sample deformation such as stress, strain, displacement and displacement velocity. Currently, the analysis technology is not available at the level of simplicity and accessibility needed to teach the methods in an undergraduate laboratory. This project aims to develop a single program to perform DIC that is simple to use, accurate, and available at low cost. This paper describes the state of current DIC algorithm research, drawbacks of available technologies, the development cycle of the software including the techniques used to obtain the necessary accuracy and performance, and a demonstration of the DIC functionality in comparison to results obtained from commercial software.
