Comparison of Dynamic and Aerodynamic Characteristics of the Centrifugal Fan Calculated by Different Methods

The main aim of this paper is determine the centrifugal fan with forward curved blades aerodynamic characteristics based on numerical modeling. Three variants of geometry were investigated. The first, basic “A” variant contains 12 blades. The geometry of second “B” variant contains 12 blades and 12 semi-blades with optimal length [1]. The third, control variant “C” contains 24 blades without semi-blades. Numerical calculations were performed by CFD Ansys and OpenFoam. Another aim of this paper is to compare results of the numerical simulation with results of approximate numerical procedure. Applied approximate numerical procedure [2] is designated for to determine characteristics of the turbulent flow in the bladed space of a centrifugal-flow fan impeller. This numerical method is an extension of the hydro-dynamical cascade theory for incompressible and inviscid fluid flow. Paper also partially compares results from the numerical simulation and results from the experimental investigation. Acoustic phenomena observed during experiment, during numerical simulation manifested as deterioration of the calculation stability, residuals oscillation and thus also as a flow field oscillation. Pressure pulsations are evaluated by using of frequency analysis for the each variant and working condition.

For the large centrifugal fan impeller, its working condition generally is bad, and its geometry generally is complex. So its displacements and stresses distribution are also complex. In this paper, we can obtain the fan impeller’s displacements and stresses distribution accurately through numerical simulation in G4-73 type centrifugal fan impeller using the finite element method software ANSYS. The calculation result shows that the maximum total displacement of the impeller is m, it occurs on the position of the half of the blade near the outlet of the impeller; and the maximum equivalent stress of the impeller is 193 MPa, it occurs on the contacted position of the blade and the shroud near inlet of the impeller. Furthermore, check the impeller strength, the result shows that the strength of the impeller can meet the requirement.

This paper makes use of the FLUENT to the variable working condition centrifugal fan on the gas-solid two phase flow numerical simulation, the numerical simulation adopts the whole flow field simulation, makes the use of surface source, analysis working condition changes on centrifugal fan blade pressure surface wear, finally it draws a relatively high-quality fan operation condition and takes measures to control fan wear in view of the situation.

In this paper, k-Omega turbulence model is applied in the numerical simulation of the transit bus, several typical working conditions of the transit bus with windows open at a speed of 10m/s are investigated, and a custom function Q is introduced to characterize the amount of ventilation of each window. The results show that, when the transit bus travels with windows open, the air always flows into the carriage through the middle and rear side windows of the transit bus, and circulates in the carriage and then flows out of the carriage through the front side window. When the bus travels with sunroofs open in leeward mode and side windows open, the amount of ventilation is the maximum. This working condition is the best one when taking both drag coefficient and the amount of ventilation.

The full flow field model of a widely used multi-blade centrifugal fan was built, and unstructured grids were used to discrete the computational domain. The moving reference frame is adopted to transfer data between the interfaces of the rotating field and the stationary field. Pressure boundary conditions are specified to the inlet and the outlet. The SIMPLE algorithm in conjunction with the RNG k-ε turbulent model was used to solve the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. The steady and unsteady numerical simulations of the inner flow in the fan at different working conditions were presented using the CFD method. The numerical simulation results were validated by contrasting to the experiment results. The results displayed the characteristics of the velocity field, pressure field, pressure fluctuation at two monitoring points in the centrifugal fan. The results can provide basis for optimizing the fan design and the internal flow, and have important value of engineering applications in the increase of the overall performance in operation.

Numerical simulation of vibro-stone column is taken to simulate the installation of vibro-stone column. A relationship based on test is adopted to calculate the excess pore pressure induced by vibratory energy during the installation of vibro-stone column. A numerical procedure is developed based on the formula and Terzaghi-Renduric consolidation theory. Finally numerical results of composite stone column are compared single stone column.

In order to analyze the impact of engine cabin parts on aerodynamic characteristics, the related parts are divided into three categories except the engine cooling components: front thin plates (average thickness of 2mm), bottom-suspension and interior panels. The aerodynamic drag coefficient (Cd) were obtained upon the combination schemes consisting of the three types of parts by numerical simulation. Results show that Cd by simulation is closer to the test value gained by the wind tunnel experiment when front thin plates were simplified to the two-dimensional interface with zero thickness. The error is only 5.23%. Meanwhile this scheme reduces grid numbers, thus decreasing the calculating time. As the front thin plates can guide the flow, there is no difference on the Cd values gained from the model with or without bottom-suspension or interior panels when the engine cabin contains the front thin plates; while only both bottom-suspension and interior panels are removed, the Cd value can be reduced when the cabin doesn’t contain the front thin plates.

This article carries out the numerical simulation of airflow over three dimensional car models using ANSYS Fluent software. The calculations have been performed by using realizable k-e turbulence model. The external airflow field of the simplified BMV M6 model with or without a wing is simulated. Several aerodynamic characteristics such as pressure distribution, velocity contours, velocity vectors, streamlines, turbulence kinetic energy and turbulence dissipation energy are analyzed in this study. The aerodynamic forces acting on the car model is calculated and compared with other authors.

The performance of centrifugal fans is considerably influenced by the design of tongue at the re-circulation port. The flow in the volute of a centrifugal fan was studied both experimentally and numerically. In this experiment, flow angle, pressure and velocity profiles were measured at a large number of locations in the volute. The flow field in the volute passage was analyzed using Computational Fluid Dynamics. The flow was assumed to be three dimensional, turbulent and steady. The numerical simulation produced qualitatively good agreement with the experimental result. The results from experiment and numerical simulation indicated that the adoption of a re-circulating flow port improved fan performance for all flow conditions. In addition, the existence of strong secondary flow was apparent at the cross-section of the volute passage.
