Structural Reliability Criteria for Control of Large-Scale Interconnected Marine Structures

In this paper, we develop a model of a futuristic fish farming structure, and study problems related to interconnected marine structures and strategies for configuration control with focus on structural reliability. Configuration control refers to positioning of individual modules or the entire structure as a whole. The structure is a chain of surface vessels, moored to the seabed via a spread mooring system connected to the front vessel. In this paper we design a control system that: 1) Ensures limited loading of the mooring system in order to avoid mooring cable failure and;2) Ensures positive strain in the connectors between vessels in order to avoid buckling effects due to variations in for instance the current. Control actuation is by means of a thruster mounted on the first module. The performance of the control system is demonstrated by simulations.

The present paper is concerned with floating marine structures that are kept in position by means of mooring lines in addition to a thruster system. Different options relevant for construction of automatic control schemes for the thruster system are first investigated based on a simplified response model. In particular, the role of structural reliability criteria applied to the mooring system is investigated. Subsequently, a more refined control algorithm based on such reliability criteria is introduced. The performance of this control system is demonstrated by numerical simulations.

This paper presents an experimental study using Real-Time Hybrid Model (ReaTHM) testing of a moored floating cylindrical buoy, conducted in a wave basin. ReaTHM testing is a method for studying the dynamics of marine structures by partitioning the system into numerical and physical substructures that are then coupled in real-time using a control system. In this study, the floating cylinder buoy is modelled physically, and the mooring system modelled numerically. In this paper, the effect of selected controller parameters on the performance of the control system is studied, for both wave frequency and low-frequency ranges. The architecture/design of the control system is presented in the first part of the paper, while results from experimental tests with wave excitation on the physical substructure are presented in the second part of the paper.

This paper mainly studies the application of intelligent lighting control system in different sports events in large sports competition venues. We take the Xiantao Stadium, a large­scale sports competition venue in Zaozhuang City, Shandong Province as an example, to study its intelligent lighting control system. In this paper, the PID (proportion – integral – derivative) incremental control model and the Karatsuba multiplication model are used, and the intelligent lighting control system is designed and implemented by multi­level fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model. Finally, the paper evaluates the actual effect of the intelligent lighting control system. The research shows that the intelligent lighting control system designed in this paper can accurately control the lighting of different sports in large stadiums. The research in this paper has important practical significance for the planning and design of large­scale sports competition venues.

The objective of this work is to study the ageing state of a used reverse osmosis (RO) membrane taken in Algeria from the Benisaf Water Company seawater desalination unit. The study consists of an autopsy procedure used to perform a chain of analyses on a membrane sheet. Wear of the membrane is characterized by a degradation of its performance due to a significant increase in hydraulic permeability (25%) and pressure drop as well as a decrease in salt retention (10% to 30%). In most cases the effects of ageing are little or poorly known at the local level and global measurements such as (flux, transmembrane pressure, permeate flow, retention rate, etc.) do not allow characterization. Therefore, a used RO (reverse osmosis) membrane was selected at the site to perform the membrane autopsy tests. These tests make it possible to analyze and identify the cause as well as to understand the links between performance degradation observed at the macroscopic scale and at the scale at which ageing takes place. External and internal visual observations allow seeing the state of degradation. Microscopic analysis of the used membranes surface shows the importance of fouling. In addition, quantification and identification analyses determine a high fouling rate in the used membrane whose foulants is of inorganic and organic nature. Moreover, the analyses proved the presence of a biofilm composed of protein.

This article presents a control strategy that enables both islanded and grid-tied operations of a three-phase inverter in distributed generation. This distributed generation (DG) is based on a dramatically evolved direct current (DC) source. A unified control strategy is introduced to operate the interface in either the isolated or grid-connected modes. The proposed control system is based on the instantaneous tracking of the active power flow in order to achieve current control in the grid-connected mode and retain the stability of the frequency using phase-locked loop (PLL) circuits at the point of common coupling (PCC), in addition to managing the reactive power supplied to the grid. On the other side, the proposed control system is also based on the instantaneous tracking of the voltage to achieve the voltage control in the standalone mode and retain the stability of the frequency by using another circuit including a special equation (wt = 2πft, f = 50 Hz). This utilization provides the ability to obtain voltage stability across the critical load. One benefit of the proposed control strategy is that the design of the controller remains unconverted for other operating conditions. The simulation results are added to evaluate the performance of the proposed control technology using a different method; the first method used basic proportional integration (PI) controllers, and the second method used adaptive proportional integration (PI) controllers, i.e., an Artificial Neural Network (ANN).

Mooring systems that are used to secure position keeping of floating offshore oil and gas facilities are subject to deterioration processes, such as pitting corrosion and fatigue crack growth. Past investigations show that pitting corrosion has a significant effect on reducing the fatigue resistance of mooring chain links. In situ inspections are essential to monitor the development of the corrosion condition of the components of mooring systems and ensure sufficient structural safety. Unfortunately, offshore inspection campaigns require large financial commitments. As a consequence, inspecting all structural components is unfeasible. This article proposes to use value of information analysis to rank identified inspection alternatives. A Bayesian Network is proposed to model the statistical dependence of the corrosion deterioration among chain links at different locations of the mooring system. This is used to efficiently update the estimation of the corrosion condition of the complete mooring system given evidence from local observations and to reassess the structural reliability of the system. A case study is presented to illustrate the application of the framework.
