Commercial prosthetic limb development for transfemoral amputees has historically focused on legged locomotive function with energetically dissipative or conservative limbs. While such passive devices are effective at approximating the mechanics of the knee during level walking and stair/slope descent, the inability of these limbs to impose net positive power prevents amputees from executing a number of activities of daily living. Activities such as ascending slopes, ascending stairs, and jumping require net positive power outputs that are not fully realizable with current prosthetic leg technology [1–3]. While functionality has improved with microprocessor-based passive limbs [4], amputees continue to exhibit increased metabolic demands and non-anthropomorphic asymmetric gait [5].

ABSTRACTBackground: The purpose of the study was to translate the Interview for Deterioration in Daily Living Activities in Dementia (IDDD) into German and to evaluate the construct and concurrent validity in people with mild to moderate dementia. Methods: IDDD data of two pooled samples (n = 301) were analyzed regarding ceiling and bottom effects, internal consistency, factor reliability and correlations with corresponding scales on cognition and activities of daily living. Results: We found minimal bottom (< 5%) and ceiling (≤ 2%) effects, good internal consistency (Cronbach's α > 0.7) and moderate to good factor reliability (0.66–0.87). Low correlations with cognition (Pearson coefficient: < 0.17) confirmed the differences between cognitive testing and activities of daily living (ADL). Minor correlations with other ADL scores (r < 0.2) indicated that different scores cover a different range of ADLs. The original two factor model could not be confirmed. A suggested four factor model distinguishing initiative and performance of basic and instrumental ADL demonstrated better indices of fit and higher correlations with corresponding scales. Conclusion: A four factor model of the IDDD can be used in dementia research for assessing initiative in and performance of basic and household activities of daily living. The findings suggest that ADL scales correlate only poorly and that further development of the IDDD is needed to cover a broader range of ADLs.

Background: Bangladesh got its glorious victory of independence in 1971 from Pakistan after nine months of the liberation war. After 47 years, freedom fighters are in geriatric age. Objective: The study was aimed to assess the ability to perform daily living activities among the Freedom fighters of Bangladesh. Methods: It was a cross-sectional study and a mixed-method qualitative and quantitative. It was conducted from December 2017 to May 2018. A total of 153 freedom fighters who actively participated in the Liberation War were randomly selected from eight Bangladesh divisions. The Sami-structure questionnaire was collected in quantitative data. Qualitative data was collected by key informant interviews (KII) Physical functional status was determined by Activity of Daily Living Scales (ADLS) and Instrumental Activity of Daily Living Scales (IADLS). Freedom fighters who actively participated in the Liberation War and gladly participated were included in the study. Results: Among the 153 respondents, 92.8% were Muslim and mean age 68.50±5.808 years. Their monthly family income was a minimum of 6000 BDT and a maximum of 500000 BDT, and 92.2% received the freedom fighter allowance. Most of them lived with their family members and about half of them took care of themselves. Activities of the daily living scale showed that two-third of them had difficulties in one or more activities. The Instrumental Activities of daily living scale revealed that most of them had problems in one or more instrumental activities. Conclusion: This study revealed that the ability to perform daily living activities was so difficult for Freedom fighters at their old ages. Further large-scale studies involving all living freedom fighters could show a more complex scenario. Bangladesh Med Res Counc Bull 2020; 46(3): 184-188

Objective: Upperlimb function impairment is one of the most common consequences of stroke and a part of the motor functions, that has been considered as a necessary basis for the implementation of various of occupation and participation. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the relationship between upper extremity function and level of participation and independence in the activities of daily living in people with history of stroke in less than two years ago. Materials & Methods: This study is non-experimental and cross-sectional. Among those referring to University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences with a history of stroke in less than two years ago, the patients were selected by easy accessible sampling method. Upper limb performance was measured by Fogel-Meier and independency in daily living activities by the Functional Independence Scale (FIM) and participation by the Iranian Participation Questionnaire (IPQ).Data analysis was performed in SPSS V. 23 softwarebyusing Spearman correlation test. Results: The results showed that the correlation between upper limb performance and participation was a moderate direct relation (P=0.003, r=0.315) and there was a strong direct (r=0.625, P=0.00)correlation between upper limb performance and independence in activities of daily living. Conclusion: The relationship between upper limb function and independence in daily living activities is strong, so with further improvement and efficiency of the upper limbleadtoincreasesindependence in patients' activities of daily life. The relationship between upper limb function and participation is moderate, so to increase and improve the participation of stroke patients, in addition to upper limb mobility, other factors must be considered.

Deep knee flexion is required for many activities of daily living during work, exercise, religious worship, and hobbies. Walker et al. [1] found that activities such as rising from a low chair or getting into or out of bath require between 100° and 160° of knee flexion. Other activities such as kneeling or squatting to pick an item off the ground can be difficult with a limited range of motion. Beside deep knee flexion being important for daily living activities, it is essential in non-Western cultures that commonly sit in deep knee-bending positions.

Commercial transfemoral prostheses remain limited to energetically passive devices. Intelligent prostheses still do not replace the power generation capabilities of the missing limb. Active Transfemoral Prosthesis is designed to compensate the movements of transfemoral amputees. Base on the function and principle of huaman lower limb, Active transfemoral prosthesis is designed. Virtual prototype of active transfemoral prosthesis 3D model is built through Solidworks. A dynamical system is used to generate a position trajectory to control a linear motor replacing the missing joint. Hopf oscillator is used to construct a central pattern generator (CPG), which makes up the dynamical system.

Among people who are living in community homes for the aged, a psychological strategy to cope with daily living is belief in a just world. In this study our aim was to determine the relationship between old people's belief in a just world (BJW) and the activities of daily living (ADL). We selected a sample of 253 cognitively able people aged 60 years and over who were living in a nursing home. We collected data through surveys using a translated and validated Arabic Self-Belief in a Just World Scale and an ADL instrument. No main or interaction effects were found for BJW and length of period of residence in the home on ADL. When using age as a covariate no significant difference was found. There was a pattern of an increased level of ADL for a longer period of residence and BJW.

In Indonesia an estimated incidence rate of severe mental retardation approximately 0,3% of the entire population, and almost 3% had an IQ value below 70. As a human resources they can not be used, because 0,1% of these children require care, guidance and supervision throughout his life. Because unknown children level of independence in activities of daily living based on the degree of mental retardation then he study was aimed to know the relationship of the degree of mental retardation and ability of daily living activities. This study used cross sectional design. The population was 37 people with using total sampling, then using secondary and primary data are processed in a univariabel and bivariabel. This study was conducted in 2017 at SLB Bengkulu Province.                The results showed that most of the 37,8% has a severe degree of mental retardation, and most of the 51,4% children with mental retardation have an inability to carry out activity of  daily living. The results of bivariabel analysis by chi-square test found that p=0,005, a significant relationship between the degree of mental retardation and  ability of daily living activities. In addition to special education in school children with mental retardation should also be trained and guided by parents in carry out activities of daily living to be independent and adapt to daily life without assistance. Keywords : ADL, children, degree  of  mental retardation
