This study examined gender, disability type, age, and specific diagnostic category in relation to habitual physical activity levels (HPA), perceived fitness (PF), and perceived participation limitations (PPL) of youths, ages 6 to 20 years, in Ontario, Canada. Data collected through a mailed survey (Longmuir & Bar-Or, 1994) were reanalyzed using ANOVA and chi square statistics to provide new information. The 458 girls and 499 boys were classified by disability type: physical, chronic medical, visual, and hearing. Significant differences (p < .01) were between (a) HPA and disability type, specific diagnostic category, and age; (b) PF and disability type; and (c) PPL and disability type. Gender did not influence the results. Youths with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and visual impairment had the most sedentary lifestyles.

Abstract Background: This study investigates food preferences among individuals active in different sports. Since food intake affects the carbon footprint, it is of interest to investigate influencing factors of food choices regarding sustainability. Physically active individuals are in need for high intakes of energy and protein in order to maintain their performance. Little is known about what influence food choices in this population. Method: A survey of a sample of 367 individuals was conducted in German and Swedish gyms, climbing halls and CrossFit boxes. Therefore, a questionnaire was developed to capture information about factors influencing food choice and consumed protein sources. Kruskal-Wallis-test tested significant differences between sport groups and physical activity levels. Results: The most frequently consumed animal-based protein were dairy-products, and the most frequently used plant-based source were grains. Taste and health were the main influences on food choices. Significant differences were observed between sport groups and physical activity levels. Sustainability was ranked as moderately important, with the highest importance in people active in the outdoor sports running and climbing. Participants with high physical activity levels and active in CrossFit rated performance more important than the rest of the sample and consumed protein supplements, eggs and poultry more frequently. Conclusion: Differences in food choices between various sports and physical activity levels were identified. Understanding the underlying influences on food choices might help to motivate a shift towards a more sustainable diet in athletes.

The aim of this research is to determine the physical activity levels of physical education and sports school students and to examine the physical activity levels according to some demographic characteristics. The objective of the research is composed of 480 students who are studying different programs in Bozok University Physical Education and Sports School in 2017-2018 academic year. The sample of the research is composed of 300 students’ determined random sampling method among the students studying in Bozok University Physical Education and Sports School in 2017-2018 academic year. Demographic information about the students in the survey was obtained with the personal information form and information about the level of participation in physical activity by the International Physical Activity Scale (Short form). Frequency, percentage, cross tables, Chi-Square and ANOVA tests were used in the analysis of the data. As a result of the analyzes; statistically significant differences were found between physical activity levels according to gender, body mass index, education department, sports branch and cigarette use variables (p<.05).

Background:Parents represent a key ecological component in influencing their child’s physical activity. The aim of this exploratory study was to assess the relationship between maternal acculturation and physical activity in Hispanic children.Methods:102 Hispanic mothers (mean age 36.2 yrs; +SD 7.3 yrs) and their children (mean age 10.0 yrs, +SD 0.8 yrs) participated. Most of the mothers (74%) were foreign-born, with 62% classified as low acculturated and 38% high acculturated. Demographic, acculturation, and anthropometric measures were completed by mothers and children. Physical activity was measured using accelerometers. Relationships between maternal acculturation and demographic variables and children’s physical activity were examined using chi-square, Analysis of Variance, and simple regression. Results:Children had higher physical activity levels than their mothers (t(49) = −7.87, P < .0001). Significant correlations between maternal and child’s physical activity levels were observed in moderate (r2 = 0.13, P = .001), vigorous (r2 = 0.08, P = .05), and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (r2 = 0.17, P = .002). Low acculturated mothers were more likely to have active children compared with high acculturated mothers. Maternal BMI and other demographic characteristics were not significantly associated with child’s physical activity. Conclusions:Findings from this study revealed an association among maternal acculturation, role modeling, and child’s physical activity.

The aim of this study is to examine the physical activity levels of academicians working at the sports science faculties of state and foundation universities. The sample group of the study consists of academicians working at Marmara University and Istanbul Gelişim University. As a data collection tool in research, in addition to the personal information form "International Physical Activity questionnaire", developed by the World Health Organization and adapted to Turkish by Öztürk (2005) was used. In the evaluation of the data, besides descriptive statistics, Chi-Square test was used. As a result of the analysis, a difference was found between the physical activity levels of the academicians working at Marmara University according to their gender, age and monthly income level. No statistically significant difference was found between the gender, age, marital status, weekly lesson hours, university service years, monthly income and body mass indexes and physical activity levels of the academicians working at Istanbul Gelişim University. As a result, it has been determined that the participation levels of the academicians working in the sports science faculties of state and foundation universities differ in terms of some socio-demographic characteristics.

Article visualizations:

The aim of this work was to compare students’ physical activity and sedentary levels between two high schools, one with a natural playground and the other with a traditional one, according to the recess periods (mid-morning and lunchtime) and the sex of students. The sample consisted of all the students attending their school playground at the time of the measurement. The System for Observing Play and Leisure Activity in Youth (SOPLAY) was used to determine students’ activity levels. A total of 36 scans were conducted and three categories of activity emerged: very active, walker and sedentary. To perform intra- and inter-recess comparisons, Chi-square independence tests were carried out. Results revealed that students were more active and less sedentary in a natural playground than in a traditional one. In addition, the natural playground encouraged the same levels of PA regardless of the recess period. Moreover, boys were more active than girls during both periods in the traditional playground and during lunchtime in the natural playground. In view of the results, further research is needed to understand whether natural playgrounds can contribute to increasing physical activity levels, especially in adolescence, when building active identities becomes more important.
