Seasonal Distribution of Cod (Gadus morhua L.) Along the Canadian Atlantic Coast in Relation to Water Temperature

Seasonal relationships between size, bottom temperature, and distribution of cod are described for the western Gulf of St. Lawrence and Nova Scotia Banks.In summer, in the western Gulf of St. Lawrence, cod are distributed from 35 to 145 m at bottom temperatures from −0° to 6 °C. They are most abundant at about 100 m where the temperature is around 1 °C. In winter they are concentrated in 130–180 m along the western slope of the Laurentian Channel at bottom temperatures from 1° to 3 °C.On the Nova Scotia Banks cod are less abundant than in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. They are found mainly around Banquereau, Middle Ground, and the northern edges of Sable Island Bank. Further to the west cod are replaced by haddock as the dominant species. Nova Scotia Banks cod are found in shallower and warmer waters than Gulf cod, both in summer and winter. In summer they are present from 65 to 110 m at bottom temperatures varying from about 1° to 8 °C. In winter they are taken primarily at 90–135 m at bottom temperatures from 2° to 4 °C.Area and depth distributions of commercial catches reflect the seasonal pattern of cod migrations and distributions demonstrated in surveys and tagging studies.

Twenty-one additional species new or rare to Nova Scotia are reported. Of these, 12 belong to the Rhodophyceae, 6 to the Phaeophyceae, 1 to the Chlorophyceae, and 2 to the Xanthophyceae. Acrochaetium porphyrae and Scytosiphon dotyi, two species previously known only from the west coast of North America, are recorded for the first time from the Atlantic coast of that continent. Porphyrodiscus simulons and Entonema polycladum, known from Europe, are also recorded for the first time in North America.

I. The Ayiofarango ValleyE1 (M, GR, BM)A terrace at about the 200 m. contour, east of and above the road from Kaloi Limenes to A. Kyriaki, c. 100 m. from the point where the road crosses the watershed into the catchment area. The terrace is c. 150 m. (N.-S.) by 50 m. (E.-W.), bounded on the east by steep, bare upward gradients, and on the west by a steep downward slope covered only with low scrub. Two possible stretches of wall were found on the western slope, but the only certain structural remains were a modern sheep pen and a circular wall, c. 1–5 m. in diameter, which appeared to be a filled-in well. Abraded sherds were quite common on the western slope, but scarcer on the terrace.

Techniques of estimating population size, level of fishing, and the degree of dependence of fishing success on environmental factors are examined on the basis of tagging, catch and effort data. A new method is developed to estimate population size from catch, effort, and temperature data when the catchability varies with temperature.The methods of estimation discussed are applied to data collected from a number of lobster fisheries on Canada's Atlantic coast. Analysis confirms a relationship between the catchability of lobsters and bottom temperature. Differences in this relationship are found between areas and between tagged and untagged lobsters within areas. It is suggested that these differences are attributable to the differences in densities as well as to aggregations of lobsters and fishing. The effect of these aggregations on population size estimates is considered.Calculated average catchabilities at comparable temperatures are different for different areas. These differences are correlated with the numbers of trap hauls per day per square miles fished. It is suggested that the differences in the catchabilities might be due to interactions between units of gear not predicted by the customary relationship between catch and effort.

A temporarily closed area established to protect spawning Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in the North Sea allowed us to study the response of the Dutch beam trawl fleet exploiting common sole (Solea solea) and plaice (Pleuronectes platessa). A number of vessels left the North Sea 1 month earlier than the normal seasonal pattern. The vessels that continued fishing in the North Sea were concentrated in the remaining open areas. In the first week after the closure, the catch rate decreased by 14%, coinciding with an increase in crowding of 28%. Area specialisation affected the response of individual vessels because vessels without prior experience in the open areas showed a larger decline in catch rate compared with vessels that previously fished in these open areas and were more likely to stop fishing during the closed period. The decrease in catch rate in response to the increase in competitor density allowed us to estimate the strength of the interference competition.

The spatial and seasonal distribution of the Paracalanidae species were studied in eighteen stations in the continental shelf off Sergipe and Alagoas States, northeast Brazil, in December, 2001 and 2003, and in June, 2002 and 2003. The Paracalanidae family was constituted by coastal and shelf species such as Parvocalanus crassirostris, Paracalanus quasimodo, P. indicus and P. aculeatus and oceanic species, Calocalanus pavo and Acrocalanus longicornis. Density values were higher in stations located at 10 m isobath with respect to those located at 20 and 30 m depths. Paracalanidae abundance presented differences between seasons with values higher in June (2002, 2003) than in December (2001, 2002). All species were more abundant in the rainy season except Parvocalanus crassirostris. Paracalanus quasimodo was the dominant species with average densities of 949, 740 and 41 ind.m-3 in December months and 4231, 2389 and 1185 ind.m-3 in June months, at stations with local depths of 10, 20 and 30 m, respectively. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that salinity and temperature were the environmental variables that presented significant correlation with the distribution of Paracalanidae species, probably because these variables are influenced by the estuarine waters and by the dynamic of oceanic water masses in the continental shelf.

From 2003 to 2016, 1,649 samples were collected, covering both the time and space of the Gulf of Tonkin. The results have identified groups of seasonal dominant fish eggs and larvae: Seven species groups in Spring, nine species groups in the Summer, six species groups in Autumn, and four dominant species groups in the Winter. The dominant index (Yi) ranges from 0.02 to 0.26 depending on the species group and each season of the year, the highest in the Goby group - Gobiidae (Yi = 0.26) achieved in the Spring, followed by Herringgroup - Clupeidae reaches Yi = 0.20 in the Summer and the Anchovy group - Engraulidae reaches Yi = 0.16 in the Summer. The highest advantage index is only Yi = 0.09 in the Winter for Unicorn cod species - Bregmaceros macclelandi. During this period, the number of taxa and dominant indexes tended to decrease from Spring to Winter slightly.

It was the first Gulf War in 1991 which led to the satellite television explosion in the Arab world. Arabs then knew about Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait through CNN. Today, Arab satellite channels reach almost every Arab capital and many Middle Eastern and African nations — from Mauritania on the Atlantic coast to Iran in the east, from Syria in the north to Djibouti in the south. This battle for the airwaves and boom in satellite channels in the Arab world has become both a tool for integration and dispersion. It is raising a glimpse of hope that the flow of information will no longer be pouring from the West to the East, but from the East to the West. Questions, however, remain about the credibility of news coverage by Arabic networks like the maverick Qatar-based al-Jazeera and whether Arab journalists adhere to journalistic norms upheld in the West.

Postmedieval maritime archaeology is focused more on naval ships than classical or medieval maritime archaeology. Merchant ship archaeology lived for many years in the shadow of naval ships. Ships and seafaring were an essential part of that growth and expansion, connecting remote parts of the world in a global economy. The period after 1400 is characterized by growth and bureaucratization in most of Europe. There were major developments in ship construction after 1400. In the Mediterranean, frame-based design and construction methods reached a stage of sophisticated geometrical precision. Mediterranean techniques began to be adopted along the Atlantic coast. The demographic and economic recovery of the fifteenth century and the globalization of seafaring lead to the use of a wider range of ship sizes. Privateering was a profitable enterprise in wartime. The growth of maritime archaeology was tied directly to popular cultural interest in perceived high points in national histories.
