In Newfoundland waters, shorthorn sculpins, Myoxocephalus scorpius (L.), live to age 15 and attain a maximum size of just over 50 cm. The growth rates of males and females are little different below age 4, but above age 4 the females grow faster than the males, and the difference between average length-at-age for males and females gets progressively larger with age. Males mature at a younger age and at a smaller size than females. In any age-group where there are mature and immature individuals the mature ones are larger.

ABSTRACT Background Selecting and replacing missing teeth to natural proportions and esthetic preference of a patient in the absence of pre-extraction records is a very challenging task. Although facial analysis and proportions are well discussed in many populations, none exists for the Thrissur, Kerala, population. A prosthodontic rehabilitation for Kerala patients relying on other racial norms may result in dissonant facial proportions. Therefore, the purpose of this study was (1) to evaluate the validity of innercanthal distance as a guide in determining the mesiodistal dimension of six maxillary anterior teeth in a selected Malayalee population in the Thrissur Municipal Corporation area; (2) to check whether innercanthal distance undergoes dynamic changes over time as a result of aging; and (3) to evaluate whether there is a gender difference in the analyzed mean facial and dental proportions in this population. Materials and methods The study was conducted on 1,200 subjects in the Thrissur Municipal Corporation area. From five wards, 240 subjects were selected, out of which 120 were from the 18 to 25 years age group and 120 from the 40 to 50 years age group. Sixty males and females were selected from each group. The innercanthal distance was measured using a Digital Vernier Caliper, and alginate impressions were made to evaluate the size of maxillary anteriors. The data was analyzed statistically. Results The study showed that there is a high statistical significance between the innercanthal distance and the mesiodistal width of six maxillary anterior teeth in females (p < 0.01) and no significance in males. There was also dynamic changes in the innercanthal dimension and the mesiodistal width of maxillary anteriors with increase in age (p < 0.001). The difference in the mean of innercanthal distance between the genders was highly statistically significant, but no significance was found between the genders in the mesiodistal width of maxillary anteriors. Conclusion Within the population evaluated, there was a high statistical significance in females between the innercanthal distance and the mesiodistal width of six maxillary anterior teeth, but not for males. Innercanthal dimension was found to undergo dynamic changes as age increases in both males and females, and it was much higher in males than in females. There was no statistical significance in the comparative evaluation of mesiodistal width of maxillary anteriors of males and females in the study. Clinical significance Teeth selection is a critical step in determining the outcome of successful prosthodontic treatment. No definite guidelines for the selection of maxillary anterior teeth pertaining to the Thrissur, Kerala, population exist. A prosthodontic rehabilitation of Thrissur, Kerala, patients relying on other racial norms will result in dissonant facial proportions. In selecting maxillary anterior teeth, the knowledge of racial norms will help specify certain esthetic and functional modifications in treatment plans, which might be specific to each group. Therefore, there remains an unquestionable need for a scientific and reliable method for maxillary anterior teeth selection, which can be applied on this group of Indian population. Background: Adipose tissue mainly visceral fat is said to be harmful and acts as a harbinger of metabolic disorders. A changing trend is seen in the recent decades with decreasing incidence of metabolic disorders in men even though visceral fat is said to be higher in them. Sex hormones may influence the deposition pattern of adipose tissue. The aim of this study was to observe effects of age on visceral fat and to know if the difference in gender pattern of fat distribution is maintained throughout life or disappears after menopause.Methods: This cross-sectional observational study was conducted in Thrissur on 385 apparently healthy subjects using Omron body composition analyser. Data was analysed using SPSS 20.0 version. The tests employed were NOVA, independent samples t-test.Results: In each age group, men had significantly higher visceral fat than females. As age increased, visceral fat increased significantly in both genders. In each group, except for younger age groups, VF levels were equal in men and women.Conclusions: Visceral fat is higher in men and this difference is seen in all age groups. As age increases, visceral fat levels also increased in men and women. The distribution of visceral fat is such that a greater number of men have high to very high levels at a younger age group, a feature observed in women only in the peri and post-menopausal age. Adoption of an active lifestyle coupled with healthy diet should protect against onset of metabolic disorders.

AbstractQualitative and quantitative comparisons of histological data recorded from growing bone from seven extant and extinct taxa of Gallotia show that these lizards do not have the same longevity, reach sexual maturity at various ages and probably have different growth rates which are in reverse proportion to the specific size of individuals in each taxon. In term of relative growth, the highest rate is seen in the smallest taxon (G. atlantica) and the lowest in the largest taxon (G. goliath). It appears that differences between the maximum size reached, irrespective of the size of hatchlings, are only the consequence of changes in longevity allowing a more or less protracted growth; they are not due to differences in growth rates. On the basis of these data we discuss some points relating to adaptive strategies and evolutionary features of these lizards.

Cervical lesions are often characterized by defects seen in the gingival third of a tooth crown which may be in the facial or lingual surface. Pathological loss of tooth structure caused by factors other than dental caries such as cervical abrasion is referred to as non-carious cervical lesions (NCCL). Cervical abrasion is an example of NCCL in which a constant exposure of the tooth to mechanical forces leads to pathological wearing away of the hard tissues. In most of the cases, cervical tooth lesions are revealed to be more common as the age increases. Several studies have reported the difference in the prevalence of cervical abrasion between males and females. Many reports suggest that cervical abrasion is commonly associated with improper tooth brushing habits. To evaluate the prevalence of cervical abrasion between genders and its influence on age. It is a retrospective study conducted using the case records of Saveetha Dental College and Hospital, Chennai, India from June 2019 to March 2020. Data including the patient’s name, patient’s identification number (PID), age, gender and presence of cervical abrasion were retrieved from the patients’ case records. A total of 742 consecutive case records were retrieved and analysed. Cervical abrasion was observed in 371 individuals of this study. High prevalence of cervical abrasions was seen in males (70.9%) compared to females (29.1%). Most of the cases were observed in individuals within the 41-50 years age group (28.8%), and the least was seen within the 11-20 years age group (0.3%). Within the limits of the study, most of the cervical abrasion cases are recorded in individuals within the 41-50 years age group with higher predilection in males. There is a statistically significant association of cervical abrasion with age and gender.

Growth of adult chokka squid Loligo reynaudii d’Orbigny was modelled using mantle length and age data derived from samples collected over two years (2003 and 2004) from a single, large cohort of mature and spawning squid. A total of 588 statoliths were examined (310 males, 278 females) from individuals of 71–425 mm mantle length (ML). The maximum size of chokka squid was 425 mm ML for males and 263 mm ML for females. The Francis Growth Model and Linear Growth model were selected for further analysis from six models considered. Males and females attain similar ages, although mantle length-based daily growth rates ranged from 0.75 to 1.02 (0.88 quantile _50) mm/day for males and 0.32–0.45 (0.38 quantile _50) mm/day for females, explaining the sexual dimorphism apparent in the sizes of individuals of this species.

Dynamic compliance (Cdyn) was measured at different frequencies (breaths/min) in 30 nonsmoking males and females aged 30–59 yr. In those aged 30–49 yr Cydn at 90 breaths/min was significantly higher than at 15 breaths/min while those aged 50–59 yr showed no significant difference. Assuming an inertance of 0.01 cmH2O/l per s-2, and a sinusoidal breathing frequency, Cydn at 60 and 90 breaths/min was corrected for inertia. In the 30–49 yr age group corrected Cydn did not change with increasing frequency of breathing whereas in the 50–59 yr age group Cydn at 15 breaths/min was significantly higher than at 90 breaths/min (P is less than 0.05). In this age group, four of eight subjects were frequency dependent when corrected for inertia. These findings indicate that inertia influences Cydn at breathing frequencies of 60 per min and above. Unless this is taken into account, frequency dependence of compliance may be missed. The results also indicate that frequency dependence of compliance is normal in some older individuals but is not normal in the younger age group.

Dorsal spines of T. tandanus from the Gwydir River were used for age determination. Annuli were formed in winter (June-July). The validity of age determination and accuracy of lengths back- calculated from spine radius measurements were supported by tagging data and examination of known age fish. No differences in growth rates were detected between males and females. The variation in growth from season to season was not great. The von Bertalanffy and Gompertz growth equations were used to describe growth in length and weight respectively. The maximum size of catfish in the Gwydir River predicted by these equations was 596 mm and 2605 g.

The effect of two photoperiods and rearing at 10, 13, and 16 °C on the development of pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) maturity 12 to 13 months after fry emergence was examined. Highest rates of maturity for both males and females were observed in the 10 °C temperature regime with a normal first summer, short winter, and short second summer photoperiod. In any environment examined, males were more likely to have matured than females. Highest survival rates and fastest overall growth rates were also observed at 10 °C. The feasibility of transplanting genes from one pink salmon brood line to another is examined.

Abstract: Up to now, there are still residents of Indonesia who do not have legal documents supporting age information. Hence, proving the age of a person concerning some reasons becomes difficult. Third molar development could be used as an indicator to estimate the age in adolescents if legal documents are not available. This study was aimed to prove the difference in the development of third molars between individuals aged above and below 19 years using the third molar maturity index (I3M) method. Third molar development calculations were performed on 112 digital OPG photographs (71 females and 41 males) of patients aged 16- <24 years. Samples were divided into two age groups, namely <19 years and ≥19 years. We performed comparison tests to analyze the differences between groups and genders against I3M. The results showed significant differences between the development of third molars in individuals aged above and below 19 years according to I3M values. Meanwhile, there was no significant differences in I3M values between males and females. Males experienced faster third molar development than females in the age group <19 years. In conclusion, the I3M method can be used to differentiate the development of third molars in individuals aged above and below 19 years. Further research could be carried out by using a larger number of samples and setting a threshold of I3M for the age of 19 among Indonesian population.Keywords: dental age estimation, third molar, I3M method Abstrak: Pada saat ini, masih ada penduduk Indonesia yang tidak memiliki dokumen legal pendukung informasi usia sehingga terdapat kesulitan dalam membuktikan usia seseorang untuk berbagai kebutuhan. Perhitungan pertumbuhan molar ketiga dilakukan pada 112 foto OPG digital (71 wanita dan 41 pria) dari pasien berusia 16- <24 tahun. Sampel dibagi menjadi dua kelompok usia, yaitu <19 tahun dan ≥19 tahun. Uji beda dilakukan untuk menganalisis perbedaan antar kelompok dan jenis kelamin terhadap I3M. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan perbedaan bermakna antara pertumbuhan molar ketiga pada individu berusia di atas dan di bawah 19 tahun. Tidak terdapat perbedaan bermakna pada nilai I3M pada pria dan wanita. Pria ditemukan mengalami pertumbuhan molar ketiga yang lebih cepat dari wanita pada kelompok usia <19 tahun. Simpulan penelitian ini ialah metode I3M dapat digunakan untuk membedakan pertumbuhan molar ketiga pada individu berusia di atas dan di bawah 19 tahun. Studies on Tuberculosis (TB) in Jigawa, a Northwestern state in Nigeria, is very scarce as Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Center in the state started functioning properly only recently in 2009. Since then, there has been a hike in the number of TB patients visiting the center. This study is conducted to analyze the incidence of Tuberculosis in the state. Data used is obtained from Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Center, Ministry of Health, Jigawa State, Nigeria. Questioners are used for the collection of the available data for the period of six years (2009–2014). Linear regression is used to analyze the trend of the disease from the same period. Trends within various age groups were recorded. HIV co–infection is analyzed and its trend is also recorded over the years. Gender parity is also analyzed using a t-test. There is an increase in the number of patients from 2009 to 2014. Out of the 9590 patients seen in the period, 6538 (68.18 %) are males and3052 (31.82%) are females. At-test is used to show the significance in the difference between the number of males and females. It is also found that, there is an increase in the number of HIV co-infection over the said years. The study shows the prevalence of TB is highest among the age group of 25 – 34 (30.15%). The commonest type of TB in the population was smear positive pulmonary TB, with 5853 patients (61.03%). TB in Jigawa state was found to be significantly increasing. Out of all the 9590 patients seen at the center, 6538 (68.18 %) are males and3052 (31.82%) are females. HIV co - infection with Tuberculosis occurred in 9.94% of the patients considered. This study shows a high percentage of infection: 30.14% between the age group of 25-34.In general, Pulmonary TB has a higher prevalence of 95.69% compared to Extra Pulmonary TB that has 4.31%.
