AbstractFirst principle calculations were performed to investigate the structural, mechanical, electronic properties, and thermodynamic properties of three binary Mg–B compounds under pressure, by using the first principle method. The results implied that the structural parameters and the mechanical properties of the Mg–B compounds without pressure are well matched with the obtainable theoretically simulated values and experimental data. The obtained pressure–volume and energy–volume revealed that the three Mg–B compounds were mechanically stable, and the volume variation decreases with an increase in the boron content. The shear and volume deformation resistance indicated that the elastic constant Cij and bulk modulus B increased when the pressure increased up to 40 GPa, and that MgB7 had the strongest capacity to resist shear and volume deformation at zero pressure, which indicated the highest hardness. Meanwhile, MgB4 exhibited a ductility transformation behaviour at 30 GPa, and MgB2 and MgB7 displayed a brittle nature under all the considered pressure conditions. The anisotropy of the three Mg–B compounds under pressure were arranged as follows: MgB4 > MgB2 > MgB7. Moreover, the total density of states varied slightly and decreased with an increase in the pressure. The Debye temperature ΘD of the Mg–B compounds gradually increased with an increase in the pressure and the boron content. The temperature and pressure dependence of the heat capacity and the thermal expansion coefficient α were both obtained on the basis of Debye model under increased pressure from 0 to 40 GPa and increased temperatures. This paper brings a convenient understanding of the magnesium–boron alloys.

Power capacitors suffer multiple impulse voltages during their lifetime. With the multiple impulse voltage aging, the internal insulation, oil-film dielectric may deteriorate and even fail in the early stage, which is called accumulative effect. Hence, the time-domain dielectric response of oil-film dielectric with multiple impulse voltage aging is studied in this paper. At first, the procedure of the preparation of the tested samples were introduced. Secondly, an aging platform, impulse voltage generator was built to test the accumulative effect of capacitor under multiple impulse voltage. Then, a device was used to test the time-domain dielectric response (polarization depolarization current, PDC) of oil-film dielectric in different aging states. And finally, according to the PDC data, extended Debye model and characteristic parameters were obtained by matrix pencil algorithm identification. The results indicated that with the increase of impulse voltage times, the time-domain dielectric response of oil-film dielectric changed accordingly. The polarization current curve moved up gradually, the insulation resistance decreased when subjected to the repeated impulses. In frequency domain, the frequency spectrum of tan δ changed along with the impulse accumulation aging, especially at low frequency. At last, combined with the aging mechanism of oil-film dielectric under multiple impulse voltage, the test results were discussed.

A complex permittivity characterization method for liquid samples has been proposed. The measurement is carried out based on a self-designed microwave sensor with a split ring resonator (SRR), the unload resonant frequency of which is 5.05 GHz. The liquid samples in capillary are placed in the resonant zone of the fabricated senor for high sensitivity measurement. The frequency shift of 58.7 MHz is achieved when the capillary is filled with ethanol, corresponding a sensitivity of 97.46 MHz/μL. The complex permittivity of methanol, ethanol, isopropanol (IPA) and deionized water at the resonant frequency are measured and calibrated by the first order Debye model. Then, the complex permittivity of different concentrations of aqueous solutions of these materials are measured by using the calibrated sensor system. The results show that the proposed sensor has high sensitivity and accuracy in measuring the complex permittivity of liquid samples with volumes as small as 0.13 μL. It provides a useful reference for the complex permittivity characterization of small amount of liquid chemical samples. In addition, the characterization of an important biological sample (inositol) is carried out by using the proposed sensor.

Orthorhombic HoMnO3 films were prepared epitaxially on Nb-doped SrTiO3 single crystal substrates by using pulsed laser deposition technique. The films showed perfectly a-axis crystallographic orientations. X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy were used to characterize the films. The complex dielectric properties were measured as functions of frequency (40 Hz~1 MHz) and temperature (80 K~300 K) with a signal amplitude of 50 mv. The respective dielectric relaxation peaks shifted to higher frequency as the measuring temperature increased, with the same development of real part of the complex permittivity. The cole-cole diagram was obtained according to the Debye model, and the effects of relaxation process were discussed.

The structural, elastic and thermodynamic properties of the A15 structure V3Ir, V3Pt and V3Au were studied using first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) within generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and local density approximation (LDA) methods. The results have shown that both GGA and LDA methods can process the structural optimization in good agreement with the available experimental parameters in the compounds. Furthermore, the elastic properties and Debye temperatures estimated by LDA method are typically larger than the GGA methods. However, the GGA methods can make better prediction with the experimental values of Debye temperature in V3Ir, V3Pt and V3Au, signifying the precision of the calculating work. Based on the E–V data derived from the GGA method, the variations of the Debye temperature, coefficient of thermal expansion and heat capacity under pressure ranging from 0 GPa to 50 GPa and at temperature ranging from 0 K to 1500 K were obtained and analyzed for all compounds using the quasi-harmonic Debye model.

The all-electron full-potential linearized muffin-tin orbital method, by means of quasi-harmonic Debye model, is applied to investigate the elastic constant and thermodynamic properties of body-centered-cubic tantalum (bcc Ta). The calculated elastic constants of bcc Ta at 0 K is consistent with the previous experimental and theoretical results. Our calculations give the correct trends for the pressure dependence of elastic constants. By using the convenient quasi-harmonic Debye model, we refined the thermal equations of state. The thermal expansivity and some other thermal properties agree well with the previous experimental and theoretical results.

The electromagnetic wave propagation in a nonlinear medium is described by the Kerr model in the case of an instantaneous response of the material, or by the Kerr–Debye model if the material exhibits a finite response time. Both models are quasilinear hyperbolic and are endowed with a dissipative entropy. The initial-boundary value problem with a maximal-dissipative impedance boundary condition is considered here. When the response time is fixed, in both the one-dimensional and two-dimensional transverse electric cases, the global existence of smooth solutions for the Kerr–Debye system is established. When the response time tends to zero, the convergence of the Kerr–Debye model to the Kerr model is established in the general case, i.e. the Kerr model is the zero relaxation limit of the Kerr–Debye model.
