We search for a bosonic (nonsupersymmetric) string/gauge theory correspondence by using the ten-dimensional IIB and 0B strings as a guide. Our construction is based on the low-energy bosonic string effective action modified by an extra form flux. We prove that the closed string tachyon can be stabilized in this context, when the AdS scalem L does not exceed a certain critical value, L<L c . The extra form may be nonperturbatively generated as a soliton from 3-string junctions, similarly to the known nonperturbative (Jackiw–Rebbi–'t Hooft–Hasenfratz) mechanism in gauge theories, as was recently argued by David, Minwalla and Núñez. We find a stable AdS 13×S13 solution that implies the existence of a 12-dimensional AdS-boundary conformal field theory with the SO(14) global symmetry in the large N't Hooft limit, which is similar to the recently proposed bosonic M-theory of Horowitz and Susskind. Taking the proposed bosonic AdS/CFT correspondence for granted, we generalize it to finite temperature. The corresponding "glueball" masses in higher space–time dimensions are calculated from the dilaton wave equation in the AdS black hole background.

We revisit the correspondence between Calabi-Yau (CY) threefold isolated singularities \mathbf{X}𝐗 and five-dimensional superconformal field theories (SCFTs), which arise at low energy in M-theory on the space-time transverse to \mathbf{X}𝐗. Focussing on the case of toric CY singularities, we analyze the “gauge-theory phases” of the SCFT by exploiting fiberwise M-theory/type IIA duality. In this setup, the low-energy gauge group simply arises on stacks of coincident D6-branes wrapping 2-cycles in some ALE space of type A_{M-1}AM−1 fibered over a real line, and the map between the Kähler parameters of \mathbf{X}𝐗 and the Coulomb branch parameters of the field theory (masses and VEVs) can be read off systematically. Different type IIA “reductions” give rise to different gauge theory phases, whose existence depends on the particular (partial) resolutions of the isolated singularity \mathbf{X}𝐗. We also comment on the case of non-isolated toric singularities. Incidentally, we propose a slightly modified expression for the Coulomb-branch prepotential of 5d \mathcal{N}=1𝒩=1 gauge theories.

In the first part of this paper we find supergravity solutions corresponding to branes on worldvolumes of the form Rd×Σ where Σ is a Riemann surface. These theories arise when we wrap branes on holomorphic Riemann surfaces inside K3 or CY manifolds. In some cases the theory at low energies is a conformal field theory with two less dimensions. We find some non-singular supersymmetric compactifications of M-theory down to AdS5. We also propose a criterion for permissible singularities in supergravity solutions. In the second part of this paper, which can be read independently of the first, we show that there are no non-singular Randall-Sundrum or de-Sitter compactifications for large class of gravity theories.

The anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence implies that small perturbations of a black hole correspond to small deviations from thermodynamic equilibrium in a dual field theory. For gauge theories with an Einstein gravity dual, the AdS/CFT correspondence predicts a universal value for the ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy density, η/s = 1/4π. It was conjectured recently that all fluids conform to the lower bound: η/s ≥ 1/4π. This conjectured bound has been the focus of much recent attention. However, despite the flurry of research in this field we still lack a proof for the general validity of the bound. In this essay we show that this mysterious bound is actually a direct outcome of the interplay between gravity, quantum theory, and thermodynamics.

As a first step towards a quantitative understanding of the SU(4)/Sp(4) composite Higgs model through lattice calculations, we discuss the low energy effective field theory resulting from the SU(4) → Sp(4) global symmetry breaking pattern. We then consider an Sp(4) gauge theory with two Dirac fermion flavours in the fundamental representation on a lattice, which provides a concrete example of the microscopic realisation of the SU(4)/Sp(4) composite Higgs model. For this system, we outline a programme of numerical simulations aiming at the determination of the low-energy constants of the effective field theory and we test the method on the quenched theory. We also report early results from dynamical simulations, focussing on the phase structure of the lattice theory and a calculation of the lowest-lying meson spectrum at coarse lattice spacing.

Three-dimensional Chern-Simons gauge theories are quantized in a functional coherent state formalism. The connection with two-dimensional conformal field theory is found to emerge naturally. The normalized wave functionals are identified as generating functionals for the chiral blocks of two-dimensional current algebra.

A summary is reported on our previous publications about four-dimensional [Formula: see text] supersymmetric Spin(10) gauge theory with chiral superfields in the spinor and vector representations in the non-Abelian Coulomb phase. Carrying out the method of a-maximization, we studied decoupling operators in the infrared and the renormalization flow of the theory. We also give a brief review on the non-Abelian Coulomb phase of the theory after recalling the unitarity bound and the a-maximization procedure in four-dimensional conformal field theory.

Abstract The Weak Gravity Conjecture has recently been re-formulated in terms of a particle with non-negative self-binding energy. Because of the dual conformal field theory (CFT) formulation in the anti-de Sitter space, the conformal dimension ∆(Q) of the lowest-dimension operator with charge Q under some global U(1) symmetry must be a convex function of Q. This property has been conjectured to hold for any (unitary) conformal field theory and generalized to larger global symmetry groups. Here we refine and further test the convex charge conjecture via semiclassical computations for fixed charge sectors of different theories in various dimensions. We analyze the convexity properties of the leading and next-to-leading order terms stemming from the semiclassical computation, de facto, extending previous tests beyond the leading perturbative contributions and to arbitrary charges. In particular, the leading contribution is sufficient to test convexity in the semiclassical computations. We also consider intriguing cases in which the models feature a transition from real to complex conformal dimensions either as a function of the charge or number of matter fields. As a relevant example of the first kind, we investigate the O(N) model in 4 + ϵ dimensions. As an example of the second type, we consider the U(N) × U(M) model in 4 − ϵ dimensions. Both models display a rich dynamics where, by changing the number of matter fields and/or charge, one can achieve dramatically different physical regimes. We discover that whenever a complex conformal dimension appears, the real part satisfies the convexity property.

The gaugino propagator is calculated by explicitly considering the propagation of a heterotic string between two different points in spacetime using the nontrivial worldsheet conformal field theory for the five-brane background. We find that there are no propagations of gaugino which is in the spinor representation of the nontrivial four-dimensional space of the five-brane background. This result is consistent with the arguments on the fermion zero-modes of the five-brane background in the low-energy heterotic supergravity theory. Furthermore, assuming the continuous limit to the flat spacetime background at the place far away from the five-brane, we suggest an effective propagator which is effective only at the place far away from the five-brane in the flat spacetime limit. From the effective propagator we evaluate a possible gaugino pair condensation. The result is consistent with the suggested scenario of the gaugino condensation in the five-brane background in the low-energy heterotic supergravity theory.
