RESEARCH ON THE WAVE-INDUCED SHIP MOTIONS IN FRONT OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF WHARF

One important function of the port is to protect ship or some other facilities from wave attack so as to stably handle cargoes. In current design codes, there are mainly two expressions of the tranquility standard of harbor basin: one is the acceptable wave height in front of wharf; the other is the tolerable amplitude of ship motion. However, ship motions are affected by some more factors simultaneously, such as wave frequency, wave height, incident wave direction, ship properties and wharf type. This paper presents some computed results of the wave-induced ship motions on the basis of a port case in China. First, the Simple Green Function method is employed to solve and compare the 2-dimension hydrodynamic coefficients in front of open or bulkhead wharf. The results show a great difference between them. Then, this paper computes and discusses the ship motions in front of open wharf at different wave frequencies and incident wave directions.

Statistical data are collected so as to quantify the probability of occurrence of voluntary course changes in heavy weather as well as their dependence on significant wave height and on ship heading. Decision rules are established about when and how to change course, on the basis of the analysis of operational data and of interviews with experienced shipmasters. A Monte Carlo simulation is performed so as to determine how an omnidirectional distribution of initial headings is changed by voluntary course changes depending on the significant wave height. Finally, the effect of the nonuniform distribution of headings on the mean wave-induced vertical bending moment is calculated. It is shown that although heavy weather maneuvering eases the ship motions, it can increase the wave-induced bending moments and thus increase the probability of structural failure.

It is known that the added resistance in waves can be computed from ship-generated unsteady waves through the unsteady wave analysis method. To investigate the effects of nonlinear ship-generated unsteady waves and bluntness of the ship geometry on the added resistance, measurements of unsteady waves, wave-induced ship motions, and added resistance were carried out using two different (blunt and slender) modified Wigley models. The ship-generated unsteady waves are also produced by the linear superposition using the waves measured for the diffraction and radiation problems and the complex amplitudes of ship motions measured for the motion-free problem in waves. Then a comparison is made among the values of the added resistance by the direct measurement using a dynamometer and by the wave analysis method using the Fourier transform of measured and superposed waves. It is found that near the peak of the added resistance where ship motions become large, the degree of nonlinearity in the unsteady wave becomes prominent, especially at the forefront part of the wave. Thus, the added resistance evaluated with measured waves at larger amplitudes of incident wave becomes much smaller than the values by the direct measurement and by the wave analysis with superposed waves or measured waves at smaller amplitude of incident wave. Discussion is also made on the characteristics of the added resistance in the range of short incident waves.

In this study, the adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and artificial neural network (ANN) were employed to estimate the wind- and wave-induced coastal current velocities. The collected data at the Joeutsu-Ogata coast of the Japan Sea were used to develop the models. In the models, significant wave height, wave period, wind direction, water depth, incident wave angle, and wind speed were considered as the input variables; and longshore and cross-shore current velocities as the output variables. The comparison of the models showed that the ANN model outperforms the ANFIS model. In addition, evaluation of the models versus the multiple linear regression and multiple nonlinear regression with power functions models indicated their acceptable accuracy. A sensitivity test proved the stronger effects of wind speed and wind direction on longshore current velocities. In addition, this test showed great effects of significant wave height on cross-shore currents' velocities. It was concluded that the angle of incident wave, water depth, and significant wave period had weaker influences on the velocity of coastal currents.

Abstract The influence of the low-frequency-wave-drifting force on the motions of moored vessels and the loads in the mooring system is demonstrated from results of model tests in irregular waves. The origin of the wave drifting force is discussed and methods for calculating the mean drifting force are reviewed. To facilitate calculation of the low-frequency-wave drifting force on an object in irregular waves, an existing method using the mean drifting force in regular waves is generalized. The results of calculations using the method introduced in this paper are compared with previously published test results. Finally, some remarks are added concerning effects that have not been accounted for in existing calculation methods. Introduction A vessel moored at sea in stationary conditions with regard to waves, wind, and current is subjected to forces that tend to shift it from the desired position. For a given vessel and position in the position. For a given vessel and position in the horizontal plane, the motions depend on both the mooring system and the external forces acting on the vessel. In steady conditions, the forces caused by a constant wind and current are constant quantities for a given heading angle of the vessel. The forces caused by a stationary irregular sea are of an irregular nature and may be split into two parts: first-order oscillatory forces with wave parts: first-order oscillatory forces with wave frequency, and second-order, slowly varying forces with frequencies much lower than the wave frequency.The first-order oscillatory wave forces on a vessel cause the well known ship motions whose frequencies equal the frequencies present in the spectrum of the irregular waves. These are the linear motions of surge, sway, and heave and the three angular motions of roll, pitch, and yaw. In general, the first-order wave forces are proportional to the wave height, as are the ensuing motions. The magnitude of the linear oscillatory motions is in the order of the height of the waves.The second-order wave forces, perhaps better known as the wave drifting forces, have been shown to be proportional to the square of the wave height. These forces, though small in magnitude, are the cause of the low-frequency, large-amplitude, horizontal motions sometimes observed in large vessels moored in irregular waves. Tests run in irregular waves in wave tanks of the Netherlands Ship Model Basin revealed a number of properties and effects of the low-frequency-wave properties and effects of the low-frequency-wave drifting force that are discussed here using the results of two test programs.The first of these programs concerns tests run with the model of a 125,000-cu m LNG carrier moored in head seas with an ideal linear mooring system. The second program deals with a 300,000-DWT VLCC moored with a realistic nonlinear bow hawser to a single-buoy mooring in waves, wind, and current coming from different directions.The results of the tests with the LNG carrier are shown in Figs. 1 through 3, while the results of the tests with the 300,000-DWT VLCC are shown in Fig. 4. AbstractA three-dimensional (3D) time-domain method is developed to predict ship motions in waves. To evaluate the Froude-Krylov (F-K) forces and hydrostatic forces under the instantaneous incident wave profile, an adaptive mesh technique based on a quad-tree subdivision is adopted to generate instantaneous wet meshes for ship. For quadrilateral panels under both mean free surface and instantaneous incident wave profiles, Froude-Krylov forces and hydrostatic forces are computed by analytical exact pressure integration expressions, allowing for considerably coarse meshes without loss of accuracy. And for quadrilateral panels interacting with the wave profile, F-K and hydrostatic forces are evaluated following a quad-tree subdivision. The transient free surface Green function (TFSGF) is essential to evaluate radiation and diffraction forces based on linear theory. To reduce the numerical error due to unclear partition, a precise integration method is applied to solve the TFSGF in the partition computation time domain. Computations are carried out for a Wigley hull form and S175 container ship, and the results show good agreement with both experimental results and published results.

As the wave forces are the function of the wave height, period and the angle between the incoming wave direction and the axis of the discharge pipeline, the resultant wave force is directly related to the alignment of the pipeline. In this paper, a method is explained to determine an optimum pipeline route for which the resultant wave force becomes minimum and hence, the cost of the constructive measures may decrease. Also, the application of this method is submitted through a case study.

In-service monitoring can help to increase safety of ships especially regarding the fatigue assessment. For this purpose, it is compulsory to know the environmental conditions encountered: wind, but also the full directional wave spectrum. During the EU TULCS project, a full scale measurements campaign has been conducted onboard the CMA-CGM 13200 TEU container ship Rigoletto. She has been instrumented to measure deformation of the ship as well as the sea state encountered during its trip. This paper will focus on the sea state estimation. Three systems have been installed to estimate the sea state encountered by the Rigoletto: An X-band radar from Ocean Waves with WAMOS® system and two altimetric wave radars from RADAC®. Nevertheless, the measured significant wave height can be disturbed by several external elements like bow waves, sprays, sea surface ripples, etc… Furthermore, ship motions are also measured and can provide another estimation of the significant wave height using a specific algorithm developed by DCNS Research for the TULCS project. As all those estimations are inherently different, it is necessary to make a fusion of those data to provide a single estimation (“best estimate”) of the significant wave height. This paper will present the data fusion process developed for TULCS and show some first validation results.

The effect of various centre bow lengths on the motions and wave-induced slamming loads on wave-piercing catamarans is investigated. A 2.5 m hydroelastic segmented model was tested with three different centre bow lengths and towed in regular waves in a towing tank. Measurements were made of the model motions, slam loads and vertical bending moments in the model demi-hulls. The model experiments were carried out for a test condition equivalent to a wave height of 2.68 m and a speed of 20 knots at full scale. Bow accelerations and vertical bending moments due to slamming showed significant changes with the change in centre bow, the longest centre bow having the highest wave-induced loads and accelerations. The increased volume of displaced water which is constrained beneath the bow archways is identified as the reason for this increase in the slamming load. In contrast it was found that the length of centre bow has a relatively small effect on the heave and pitch motions in slamming conditions.

Within the current design codes for boilers, piping, and pressure vessels, there are many different equations for the thickness of a cylindrical section under internal pressure. A reassessment of these various formulations, using the original data, is described together with more recent developments in the state of the art. A single formula, which can be demonstrated to retain the same design margin in both the time-dependent and time-independent regimes, is shown to give the best correlation with the experimental data and is proposed for consideration for inclusion in the design codes.
