Stiffness and Transfer Matrix Analysis in Global Coordinates of a 3D Curved Beam

This article presents the differential equation in the global coordinates governing the structural behavior of 3D curved beams existing in building structures and civil works. This differential equation presented is of the lower-triangular form, which allows us to obtain the transfer matrix, also of lower-triangular form and with unit diagonal, through simple integrals. The stiffness matrix is determined from the transfer matrix expression, only by reordering operations, without employing additional structural methods, energy theorems or other. This rearrangement can be more easily done under the global system, compared with the natural reference system, since the order of the matrices involved has been reduced. The examples presented show the process to apply this general procedure to derivation of the stiffness matrix of a member from its transfer expression, through reordering operations.

Abstract Modern turbomachinery is used to provide power for a wide range of applications, from steam turbines for electrical power plants to the turbopumps used in the Space Shuttle Main Engine. Such devices are subject to a variety of dynamical problems, including vibration, rotordynamical instability, and shaft whirl. In order to properly design and evaluate the performance and stability of turbomachinery, It is important that appropriate analytical tools be available that allow for the study of potentially important dynamical effects. This research effort is concerned with developing a procedure to account for disk flexibility which can readily be used for investigating how such effects might influence the natural frequencies and critical speeds of practical rotor systems. In the present work, a transfer matrix procedure is developed in which the disk flexibility effects are accounted for by means of additional terms included in the transfer matrix formulation. In this development, the shaft is treated as a discrete system while the disk is modelled as a continuous system using the governing partial differential equation. Based on this governing equation, an equivalent inertial moment Mk*, which is the generalized dynamic force coupling between shaft and disk, is then derived. Analysis shows that only the disk modes of one nodal diameter contribute to the inertial moment, Mk*, and thus influence the natural frequencies of the rotor system. To determine the Mk*, the modal expansion method is employed and the governing partial differential equation of the disk is transformed to a set of decoupled forced vibration equations in the generalized coordinates. The Mk* are then calculated in terms of modal shapes, natural frequencies, and material and geometric parameters which can be found in the literature or can be obtained from experiments. Finally the Mk* are incorporated into the point transfer matrix. By so doing, the properties of quick computational speed and ease of use are retained and the complexity of solving partial differential equations is avoided. This allows the present procedure to be easily applied to practical engineering problems. This is especially true for multiple flexible disk rotor systems. As an example, three different cases for a simplified model of the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) High Pressure Oxygen Turbo-Pump (HPOTP) rotor have been studied using this procedure. Some of the more interesting results obtained in this example study are enumerated below. 1.) Disk flexibility can introduce additional natural frequency(s) to a rotor system. 2.) Disk flexibility can cause shifting of some of the natural frequencies. 3.) As disk flexibility is increased, lower natural frequencies of the rotor system will be influenced. 4.) At certain rotor speeds, disk flexibility may cause the disappearance of a natural frequency. 5.) The axial position of the disk on the rotor shaft has a significant effect on the degree of this influence.

In this paper, the exact stiffness matrix of curved beams with nonuniform cross section is derived using direct method. The considered element has two nodes and 12 degrees of freedom, with three forces and three moments applied at each node. The noncoincidence effect of shear center and center of area is also considered in this element. The deformations of the beam are due to bending, torsion, tensile, and shear loads. The line passing through center of area is a general three-dimensional curve and the cross section properties may change arbitrarily along it. The method is extended to deal with distributed loads on the curved beams. The stiffness matrix of some selected types of beams is determined by this method. The results are compared (where possible) with previously published results, simple beam finite element analysis and analytic solution. It is shown that the determined stiffness matrix is exact and that any type of beam can be analyzed by this method.

This paper addresses the stochastic modeling of the stiffness matrix of slender uncertain curved beams that are forced fit into a clamped-clamped fixture designed for straight beams. Because of the misfit with the clamps, the final shape of the clamped-clamped beams is not straight and they are subjected to an axial preload. Both of these features are uncertain given the uncertainty on the initial, undeformed shape of the beams and affect significantly the stiffness matrix associated with small motions around the clamped-clamped configuration. A modal model using linear modes of the straight clamped-clamped beam with a randomized stiffness matrix is employed to characterize the linear dynamic behavior of the uncertain beams. This stiffness matrix is modeled using a mixed nonparametric-parametric stochastic model in which the nonparametric (maximum entropy) component is used to model the uncertainty in final shape while the preload is explicitly, parametrically included in the stiffness matrix representation. Finally, a maximum likelihood framework is proposed for the identification of the parameters associated with the uncertainty level and the mean model, or part thereof, using either natural frequencies only or natural frequencies and mode shape information of the beams around their final clamped-clamped state. To validate these concepts, a simulated, computational experiment was conducted within Nastran to produce a population of natural frequencies and mode shapes of uncertain slender curved beams after clamping. The application of the above concepts to this simulated data led to a very good to excellent matching of the probability density functions of the natural frequencies and the modal components, even though this information was not used in the identification process. These results strongly suggest the applicability of the proposed stochastic model.

Based on the theory of virtual work and principle of thermal elasticity, exact solutions for in-plane displacements of curved beams with pinned-pinned ends are derived explicitly. In the case of infinite limit of radius, these equations coincide with that of the straight beams. Compared with the results of FEM, the analytical solutions by the proposed formulae are accurate. Basing on the stiffness matrix of statically indeterminate curved beams at three freedom direction, the dynamic characteristics are derived explicitly. The analytic method of dynamic characteristics for curved beam performed in this paper would provide a scientific base for further study and design of the curved bridges.

The transfer matrix method for rotordynamic analysis (alternately known as the HMP or LMP method) has enjoyed wide popularity due to its flexibility and ease of application. A number of computer programs are generally available which use this method in various forms to perform undamped critical speed, unbalance response, damped critical speed and stability analyses. For all of these analyses, the assembly of the transfer matrices from the rotor model is essentially the same. In all cases, the rotor model must be composed entirely of cylindrical beam elements. There are two situations when this limitation is not desirable. The first situation is when the rotor being modelled has one or more sections whose cross sections vary continually in the axial direction. The most common of these sections is the conical section. Presently, a conical section must be modelled as a series of “steps” of cylindrical sections. This adversely affects both the simplicity and accuracy of the rotor model. The second situation when current transfer matrix techniques are not accurate is when the rotor being modelled has one or more sections that do not behave as beam elements. The most common example is a trunnion which behaves as a plate. This paper describes the analytical basis and the method of application for direct representation of conical sections and trunnions for a transfer matrix analysis. Analytical results are currently being generated to demonstrate the need for and advantages of these modelling procedures.

Abstract Pipe systems have been widely used in industrial plants such as power stations. In these systems, the displacement and stress distributions often need to be predicted. Analytical and numerical methods, such as the finite element method (FEM), boundary element method (BEM), and frame structure method (FSM), are typically adopted to predict these distributions. The analytical methods, which can only be applied to problems with simple geometries and boundary conditions, are based on the Timoshenko beam theory. Both FEM and BEM can be applied to more complex problems, although this usually requires a stiffness matrix with a large number of degrees-of-freedom. In FSM, although the structure is modeled by a beam element, the stiffness matrix still becomes large; furthermore, the matrix size needed in FEM and BEM is also large. In this study, the transfer matrix method, which is simply referred to as TMM, is studied to effectively solve complex problems, such as a pipe structure under a small size stiffness matrix. The fundamental formula is extended to a static elastic-plastic problem. The efficiency and simplicity of this method in solving a space-curved pipe system that involves an elbow are demonstrated. The results are compared with those obtained by FEM to verify the performance of the method.
