Magnesium porphyrazinate substituted with eight (1-naphthyl) groups on the peripheral positions has been synthesized by cyclotetramerization of 3,4-(1-naphthyl)pyrroline-2,5-diimine, 4-(1-naphthyl)pyrroline-2,5-diimine in the presence of magnesium butanolate. Its demetalation by treatment with trifluoroacetic acid, resulted in a partially oxidized product, namely, octakis(1-naphthyl)-2-seco-porphyrazine-2,3-dione. Further reaction of this product with copper(II) acetate, zinc(II) acetate and cobalt(II) acetate led to the metallo derivatives, [octakis(1-naphthyl)-2-seco-2,3-dioxoporphyrazinato]M(II) ( M = Cu , Zn or Co ). These new compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, together with FT-IR, 1 H NMR, UV-vis and mass spectral data.

( E)-4-[2-(Pyridin-4-yl)vinyl]benzaldehyde, containing both a 4-vinylpyridine and an aldehyde functionality, is utilized to develop new, highly conjugated chalcone compounds and a bis-Schiff base azine compound. The chalcone-containing compounds are further explored for their protonation, methylation and silver(I) coordination chemistry using the pyridine moiety. In parallel, a cyano-containing analogue, ( E)-4-[2-(pyridin-4-yl)vinyl]benzonitrile is also synthesized and studied for its silver(I) coordination chemistry. These new compounds are fully characterized by mass spectrometry, elemental analysis and spectroscopic techniques. The methylated product of ( E)-1-(9-anthryl)-3-{4-[2-(pyridin-4-yl)vinyl]phenyl}prop-2-en-1-one and a silver complex of ( E)-4-[2-(pyridin-4-yl)vinyl]benzonitrile are structurally determined by X-ray crystallography.

Octa-substituted metallophthalocyanines [M = Ni(II), Zn(II), Co(II), and Cu(II)] carrying 3,4-dialkoxyphenyl tosylamino groups at the peripheral positions have been synthesized from 1,2-dicyano-4,5-bis[(3,4-dialkoxyphenyl-tosylamino)methyl]benzene in the presence of the corresponding anhydrous metal salt. Next to the metal ion center, the length of the alkyl chains in the dialkoxyphenyl moiety ([Formula: see text], 5, 6, and 12) was varied. In total, sixteen soluble phthalocyanines have been characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR and [Formula: see text]H-NMR spectroscopy as well as mass spectrometry. Furthermore, the gas sensing properties of these new compounds have been studied using quartz crystal microbalance transducers. The sensing properties are described on the basis of sensor responses to nine different test analytes comprising volatile organic compounds, toxic gases, and chemical warfare agent simulants. The influence of the metal ion center and substituents on sensor selectivity and sensitivity is discussed. The compounds show good performance in the gas-sensing experiments with diverse responses to the analytes. Phthalocyanine species with pronounced selectivity for polar analytes, hydrocarbons or amines have been identified among the set of sensors with the help of multivariate data exploration methods. The results reveal that quite a high diversity in terms of selectivity is introduced through the minute variations to the phthalocyanine structure.

Some novel organic compounds of the type: cis, cis-1,3,5-tris(X)cyclohexane, where X= –CONH(CH2)2NH2, –CONH(CH2)3NH2, –CONH(CH2)2NCH –C6H4OH, CONH(CH2)3NCHC6H4OH, which are expected to function as potential polydentate chelators have been synthesised from 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid through multi-steps reactions. 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid was reduced to cis, cis-1,3,5-tris(ethylcarboxylate)cyclohexane, which on reaction with excess of 1,2-diaminoethane and 1,2-diaminopropane afforded two new compounds. Condensation of the obtained derivatives with three equivalents of salicylaldehyde resulted the formation of two new Schiff base compounds. All the compounds were characterised by a combination of elemental analysis, mass, IR, UV-Vis, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy.

The synthesis of novel bis-axially coordinated ruthenium(II) complexes with tetra-15-crown-5-phthalocyanine and N-donor ligands ( R 4 Pc ) Ru ( L 2) ( R 4Pc2- = 4,5,4',5',4'',5'', 4''',5'''- tetrakis(1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxotridecamethylene)phthalocyaninate-ion, L = pyridine (py), isoquino-line (iqnl), triethylamine ( Et 3 N )) is reported. The preparation technique involves the interaction of ( R 4 Pc ) Ru ( CO )( CH 3 OH ) with trimethylamine oxide in an N-donor solvent. The advantage of this method consists in selective carbonyl ejection from ( R 4 Pc ) Ru ( CO ) X with simultaneous substi-tution by N-donor ligands. The application of this procedure allowed us to decrease essentially the reaction time, as compared with photochemical methods, as well as to increase substantially the yield of reaction products. UV-visible, 1 H NMR, FT-IR and mass-spectrometry were used for characterization of the obtained compounds.

The complexes fac-[Re(CO)3Br{Ph2P(S)(CH2)nP(S)Ph2}] [1a, n = 1; 2a, n = 2; 3a, n = 3] and [Re2(CO)8Br2{μ- Ph2P(S)(CH2)nP(S)Ph2}] [1b, n = 1; 2b, n = 2; 3b, n = 3] have been prepared by the photochemical reaction of Re(CO)5Br with Ph2P(S)(CH2)nP(S)Ph2. The products have been characterized by elemental analysis, mass spectroscopy, FT-IR and 31 P-[1H]-NMR spectrometry. The results suggest cis-chelate bidentate coordination of the ligand in fac-1a - 3a and cis-bridging bidentate coordination of the ligand between two metals in 1b - 3b.
