Sulfur-doped SnO2 nanoparticles with ultrafine sizes have been successfully prepared by a one-pot hydrothermal method. The obtained samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), thermogravimetric (TG), analyzer UV-Vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The experimental results indicate that the doping level of sulfur element as well as the bandgaps of SnO2 can be controlled to a certain extent by varying the amount of L-cysteine (L-cys). When evaluated as photocatalysts in the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and reduction of Cr(VI) under visible light region, the resultant sulfur-doped SnO2 nanoparticles demonstrate obviously enhanced photocatalytic activities due to the markedly improved visible light response and effective separation of the photo-generated electron–hole pairs.

Palygorskite (denoted as Pal) was used as an economical carrier of hybrid photocatalyst TiO 2– Fe x O yvia an in situ depositing technique (marked as Pal– TiO 2– Fe x O y). The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), brunner-emmet-teller (BET) measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra measurements. Results showed that TiO 2– Fe x O y composite particles with average size of about 10 nm were loaded onto the Pal fibers' surface. Fe x O y acted not only as magnetic source but also took part in the formation of TiO 2– Fe x O y heterojunction structure, which resulted in the obvious absorption in visible light region for the obtained Pal– TiO 2– Fe x O y composite photocatalyst. The obtained Pal– TiO 2– Fe x O y shows excellent photocatalytic activity toward photodegradation of Methyl orange (MO) under visible light irradiation and the degradation ratio reached 94% within 180 min. Moreover, Pal– TiO 2– Fe x O y could be readily recovered from the reaction solution by the magnet. Possible mechanism for the enhancement was also proposed.

Abstract Bi2O2CO3 modified graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets were prepared by a simple one-pot synthetic strategy. In the presence of ammonium nitrate, different mass ratios of bismuth nitrate/melamine were used to fabricate these catalysts, which were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2-physisorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis analysis, and photoluminescence (PL). The catalytic properties of composites were evaluated by photodegrading tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) under visible light irradiation. Among these catalysts, Bi2O2CO3(1.5)/g-C3N4 showed the highest catalytic activity, which was more than 16 times greater than the pristine g-C3N4 material. The improved photocatalytic properties of Bi2O2CO3/g-C3N4 may be due to the formation of a heterojunction between Bi2O2CO3 and g-C3N4, leading to the effective separation of photo-induced carriers and the enhanced absorption of visible light. Furthermore, the Bi2O2CO3/g-C3N4 composites had considerable catalytic stability, which was a key element for their potential applications.

Titania powder was prepared by a sol-gel method and heat-treatment (HT). The morphology and structure of the titania powder were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic activity of powder was investigated using methyl orange as target compound. Colour changing of powder was due to colour centers form. Under visible light, yellow powder showed the better photocatalytic activity than P25 powder and its visible light response was expanded. Preparation of yellow powder lowered conventional calcinations temperature obviously.

Abstract In this study, we synthesized a series of rhodium-modified and Ti3+ self-doped TiO2 (Rh/Ti3+-TiO2) nanocomposites via the one-pot method. We prepared samples of Rh/Ti3+-TiO2, which were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Electron Spin Resonance (ESR), and Uv-vis-NIR analysis. We found that the ability of TiO2 to absorb near-infrared and visible light was significantly improved by the Rh/Ti3+-TiO2 nanocomposites, due to Ti3+ doping as well as modification of Rh. The disinfection properties of these materials were tested using Staphylococcus aureus under visible light and NIR light excitations. The synthesized photocatalyst was found to exhibit significantly enhanced photocatalytic inactivation of S. aureus under both visible and NIR light irradiation, as compared to pure TiO2. This was particularly true with respect to the 5% Rh/Ti3+-TiO2 sample. Our results suggest that the Rh/Ti3+-TiO2 composites could extend the range of optical response range of pure nano TiO2 materials to the Vis -NIR region.

Few-layered MoS2 nanostructures were successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method without the addition of any catalysts or surfactants. Their morphology, structure and photocatalytic activity were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectra and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, respectively. These results show that the MoS2 nanostructures synthesized at 180[Formula: see text]C exhibit an optimal visible light photocatalytic activity (99%) in the degradation of Rhodamine B owing to the relatively easier adsorption of pollutants, higher visible light absorption and lower electron–hole pair recombination.

Different organic pollutants have been remediated photo catalytically by applying perovskite photocatalysts. Atrazine (ATR) is a pesticide commonly detected as a pollutant in drinking, surface and ground water. Herein, FeYO3@rGO heterojunction was synthesized and applied for photooxidation decomposition of ATR. First, FeYO 3nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared via routine sol-gel. After that, FeYO3 NPs were successfully incorporated with different percentages (5, 10, 15 and 20 wt.%) of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) in the synthesis of novel FeYO3@rGO photocatalyst. Morphological, structural, surface, optoelectrical and optical characteristics of constructed materials were identified via X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), adsorption/desorption isotherms, diffusive reflectance (DR) spectra, and photoluminescence response (PL). Furthermore, photocatalytic achievement of the constructed materials was evaluated via photooxidative degradation of ATR. Various investigations affirmed the usefulness of rGO incorporation on the advancement of formed photocatalysts. Actually, novel nanocomposite containing rGO (15 wt.%) possessed diminished bandgap energy, as well as magnified visible light absorption. Furthermore, such nanocomposite presented exceptional photocatalytic achievement when exposed to visible light as ATR was perfectly photooxidized over finite amount (1.6 g · L-1) from the optimized photocatalyst when illuminated for 30 min. The advanced photocatalytic performance of constructed heterojunctions could be accredited mainly to depressed recombination amid induced charges. The constructed FeYO3@rGO nanocomposite is labelled as efficient photocatalyst for remediation of herbicides from aquatic environments.

Zinc sulphide (ZnS) and zinc selenide (ZnSe) and manganese-doped and un-doped with different morphologies from 1D do 3D microflowers were successfully fabricated in only a few minutes by solvothermal reactions under microwave irradiation. In order to compare the effect of microwave heating on the properties of obtained  nanocrystals, additionally the synthesis under conventional heating was conducted additionally in similar conditions. The obtained nanocrystals were systematically characterized in terms of structural and optical properties using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy (DR UV-Vis), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis. The photocatalytic activity of ZnSe, ZnS, ZnS:Mn and ZnSe:Mn nanocrystals with different morphologies was evaluated by the degradation of methyl orange (MO) and Rhodamine 6G (R6G), respectively. The results show that Mn doped NCs samples had higher coefficient of degradation of organic dyes under ultraviolet irradiation (UV).

Bimetallic phosphides have been attracting increasing attention due to their synergistic effect for improving the hydrogen evolution reaction as compared to monometallic phosphides. In this work, NiCoP modified hybrid electrodes were fabricated by a one-step electrodeposition process with TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) as a carrier. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, UV–vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to characterize the physiochemical properties of the samples. The electrochemical performance was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. We show that after incorporating Co into Ni–P, the resulting Ni x Co y P/TNAs present enhanced electrocatalytic activity due to the improved electron transfer and increased electrochemically active surface area (ECSA). In 0.5 mol L−1 H2SO4 electrolyte, the Ni x Co y P/TNAs (x = 3.84, y = 0.78) demonstrated an ECSA value of 52.1 mF cm−2, which is 3.8 times that of Ni–P/TNAs (13.7 mF cm−2). In a two-electrode system with a Pt sheet as the anode, the Ni x Co y P/TNAs presented a bath voltage of 1.92 V at 100 mA cm−2, which is an improvment of 79% over that of 1.07 V at 10 mA cm−2.

Lanthanum doped TiO2 powders were prepared by hydrolysis of titanium tetra-n-butyl oxide and La (NO3)3 in solution. The resulting powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activities of doped samples were evaluated by the decomposition of methylene blue under visible light irradiation. The XRD results showed that the doping of lanthanum could not only efficiently inhibit the grain growth but also suppress the phase transition of anatase to rutile. UV-Vis spectroscopy of lanthanum doping TiO2 indicated that the absorption onset red-shifted to the visible light region. XPS results revealed that La2O3 had formed which could enhance the surface area. The degradation rates of methylene blue verified that the visible light photocatalytic activity of TiO2 has been enhanced by the doping of lanthanum.

Photocatalytic activity of monosized AuZnO composite nanoparticles with different compositions were synthesized by the one-pot polyol procedure, using the triblock copolymer poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(propylene glycol)-blockpoly(ethylene glycol) (PEO-PPO-PEO) as the surfactant. The structure and morphology of the composite nanoparticles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The characterization showed that the AuZnO composite nanoparticles were spherical, with narrow particle size distribution and high crystallinity. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) study confirms the PEO-PPO-PEO molecules on the surface of the composite nanoparticles. The investigations by ultraviolet-visible light absorbance spectrometer (UV-Vis) and photoluminescence spectrophotometer (PL) demonstrate well the dispersibility and excellent optical performance of the AuZnO composite nanoparticles. Photocatalytic activity and reusability of the AuZnO nanoparticles in UV and visible light regions was evaluated by the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). The experimental results show that the AuZnO composite nanoparticles with a suitable amount of Au loading have stability and improved photocatalytic activity. AuZnO composite nanoparticles are effective and stable for the degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous solution.
