Abstract. Miospore assemblages are described from basal Dinantian argillaceous strata lying below and above the Cockermouth Lavas, and within the Seventh Limestone in the area to the north east of Cockermouth, West Cumbria. The strata enclosing the Lavas are assigned to the Schopfites claviger-Auroraspora macra miospore zone, indicating the Ivorian stage (Tournaisian, Tn3). The Lavas are thus shown to be of similar age to the Solway Plateau Lavas to the north which represent an early stage in the formation of the Solway Basin.Shales from below the Seventh Limestone are assigned to the Lycospora pusilla miospore zone and from this and other fossil evidence are presumed to be of Chadian or early Arundian age. Shales from within the Seventh Limestone are assigned to the Perotrilites tessellatus – Schulzospora campyloptera miospore zone (Asbian stage)It is concluded that the Ivorian-Asbian sequence in this area is greatly attenuated compared with its development on the northern margin of the Solway Basin.

Abstract. The past and projected future precipitation sum in May–September for two areas in Finland, one located in the south-west (SW) and the other in the north-east (NE), is studied using 13 regional climate simulations and three observational datasets. The conditions in the present-day climate for agricultural crop production are far more favourable in the south-western part of the country than the more continental north-eastern Finland. Based on a new high-resolution observational precipitation dataset for Finland (FMI_grid), with a resolution of 10×10 km, the only statistically significant past long-term (1908–2008) precipitation tendencies in the two study regions are positive. Differences between FMI_grid and two other observational datasets during 1961–2000 are rather large in the NE, whereas in the SW the datasets agree better. Observational uncertainties stem from the interpolation and sampling errors. The projected increases in precipitation in the early stage of the growing season would be most favourable for agricultural productivity, but the projected increases in August and September might be harmful. Model projections for the future indicate a statistically significant increase in precipitation for most of the growing season by 2100, but the distribution of precipitation within the growing season is not necessarily the most optimal.

Singapore has experienced rapid development in the past 50 years. This has presented unique challenges with regard to land space and a rapidly ageing population. The role of extrinsic factors in successful ageing is well documented, and places a degree of responsibility on the state and healthcare systems. Singapore has taken many proactive measures to meet this responsibility by implementing policy changes across multiple domains including housing, transport, education and research. One hospital in the north east of Singapore has undertaken a frailty screening program that aims to identify, prevent and reverse frailty at an early stage. This paper provides a review of these national and regional measures.

The East Greenland margin consists of a number of sedimentary basins, platforms and structural highs (Figs 1, 2). Due to the challenges imposed by the Arctic climate, the region is in an early stage of exploration, and knowledge of the geology and petroleum potential of the margin is limited. However, the significant prospectivity of the conjugated European North Atlantic margin and the nature of the North- East Greenland onshore geology prompt for future offshore exploration. The US Geological Survey thus highlighted the North-East Greenland margin in their latest assessment of the Arctic region (Gautier et al. 2011). With a mean estimate of undiscovered recoverable oil, gas, and natural gas liquids of approximately 31 billion barrels of oil equivalents, the US Geological Survey ranked the North-East Greenland margin fourth in the entire Arctic region, only superseded by known producing petroleum provinces.

This, perhaps the most complex crystalline area of the Piémontese Alps, is also eminently sui generis, for it forms a unit of rocks outside, and different from the great calc-schist horizon with pietre verdi of secondary composition. As previously stated, it is the continuation of the mica-schist and minute gneiss belt which skirts the Po Valley from the Rocciacorba group to Avigliana, Monte Musiné, and Lanzo, and, extending from Lanzo to Ivrea, Biella, and Val Sesia, reaches beyond the latter into Lombardy to Lakes Orta and Maggiore. Within the Piémontese Alps, viz. from Lanzo to Val Sesia, it is bounded on the north by the calc-schist and pietre verdi fringe which skirts the Monte Rosa gneiss massif, and on the south by the Pliocene and Pleistocene deposits of the Po Valley, its superficial area being roughly 90 by 15 kilometres or 1,350 square kilometres, equal to over 500 square miles. The lower hills of the southern margin vary from 600 to 900 metres in altitude, which in the centre of the area increases to 1,000 and at the northern margin to 2,500 metres. In its general direction south-west to north-east, the area is intersected more or less at right angles by the following affluents of the Po: Stura di Lanzo, Malone, Orco, Chiusella – Dora Baltea, Elvo–Cervo, and Sessera–Sesia. The valley floors vary at the lower limit of the crystalline area from 300 to 500, and in their upper parts from 600 to 1,000 metres in altitude.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to consider the preliminary findings arising from two case study library authorities in the North East of England, examining current volunteer use in Public Libraries. Specific reference to quality and professionalism will be discussed, to identify key trends and ways forward. Design/methodology/approach This research involved a series of interviews with key staff, a staff survey, user survey and volunteer focus groups. Findings The early-stage results of the qualitative analysis are reported, including key emergent themes relating to quality and professionalism. Triangulation of the key stakeholder opinions will be carried out. Research limitations/implications This research relates to an area that is a key factor of modern public library provision, and helps to illustrate the complex environment that exists. Practical implications Volunteer use in public libraries is a feature of the hybrid model of library provision in the twenty-first century, and the need to ensure quality and professionalism to improve service provision is even more critical. Social implications This research considers current thinking amongst stakeholders within public libraries and attempts to move the debate about volunteer use in library service provision forward. Originality/value It provides initial thoughts on what features are essential for successful volunteer use in public libraries, with regard to quality and professionalism.

The caridean shrimp Rimicaris exoculata, Chorocaris chacei and Mirocaris fortunata, together with bathymodiolid mussels, dominate the vent fauna along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Vent shrimp show the characteristic reproductive patterns of caridean decapods. The gonads are paired organs overlying the digestive gland under the carapace. In the ovaries, the oogonia (∼20-30 μm diameter) proliferate in the germinal epithelium at the periphery of the gonad, developing into previtellogenic oocytes. The previtellogenic oocytes grow to 70-100 μm before undergoing vitellogenesis. The maximum size for mature oocytes ranged between 200 and 500 μm depending on the species and the sample. The oocyte size–frequency data show no evidence of synchrony in oogenesis at population level for any of the species studied. Mirocaris fortunata is the only species where gravid females are commonly collected. The brood is carried on the pleopods, and the number of eggs per female ranges from 25 to 503, with a mean egg length of 0.79±0.14 mm. There is a positive correlation between fecundity and body size, characteristic of crustaceans. One ovigerous C. chacei and two R.exoculata have been studied. The former was carrying 2510 eggs and the later 988 small eggs in an early stage of development. The fecundity of M. fortunata, C. chacei and R. exoculata is significantly higher than that of species from the Acanthephyra group collected in the north-east Atlantic.

Ras a1 Khaimah is the most northerly of the seven states comprising the United Arab Emirates and its Ruler, H. H. Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammad al-Qasimi, is keenly interested in the history of the state and its people. Survey carried out there jointly with Dr D. B. Doe in 1968 had focused attention on the site of JuIfar which lies just north of the present town of Ras a1 Khaimah (de Cardi, 1971, 230-2). Julfar was in existence in Abbasid times and its importance as an entrep6t during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries-the Portuguese Period-is reflected by the quantity and variety of imported wares to be found among the ruins of the city. Most of the sites discovered during the survey dated from that period but a group of cairns near Ghalilah and some long gabled graves in the Shimal area to the north-east of the date-groves behind Ras a1 Khaimah (map, FIG. I) clearly represented a more distant past.
