In a crystalline solid the regular arrangement of the lattice structure influences the interaction of the incident beam with the specimen, leading to changes in both the transmitted and backscattered signals when the angle of incidence of the beam to the specimen is changed. For the simplest case the electron flux inside the specimen can be visualized as the sum of two, standing wave distributions of electrons (Fig. 1). Bloch wave 1 is concentrated mainly between the atom rows and so only interacts weakly with them. It is therefore transmitted well and backscattered weakly. Bloch wave 2 is concentrated on the line of atom centers and is therefore transmitted poorly and backscattered strongly. The ratio of the excitation of wave 1 to wave 2 varies with the angle between the incident beam and the crystal structure.

The poor interfacial adhesion of aramid fiber and matrix limits the application of the final composites. In this study, a series of the sulfone-functionalized poly( p-phenylene terephthalamide) (SPPTA) copolymers were satisfactorily synthesized and the effects of polymerization conditions (contents of the additional monomer and the cosolvent LiCl, molar concentration and ratio of the monomer, reaction temperature and time) on the molecular weight of the copolymer were discussed. The introduction of the sulfone group in aromatic polyamides not only increased the polarity of poly( p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) but destroyed the regular arrangement of the molecular chains, which greatly improved the surface free energy and the solubility of the polymers in organic solvents. The polymer maintained excellent thermal and interfacial properties. Compared with the PPTA fiber/epoxy composites, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of SPPTA fiber-reinforced epoxy composites reached 43.5 MPa, with a significantly enhancement of 20.8%, implying that the study provided an effective method to achieve highly interfacial adhesion of aramid fiber-reinforced composites.

The chromatin structure of the oocyte-type 5S RNA genes in Xenopus laevis was investigated. Blot hybridization analysis of DNA from micrococcal nuclease digests of erythrocyte nuclei showed that 5S DNA has the same average nucleosome repeat length, 192 +/- 4 base pairs, as two Xenopus satellite DNAs and bulk erythrocyte chromatin. The positions of nuclease-sensitive regions in the 5S DNA repeats of purified DNA and chromatin from erythrocytes were mapped by using an indirect end-labeling technique. Although most of the sites cleaved in purified DNA were also cleaved in chromatin, the patterns of intensities were strikingly different in the two cases. In 5S chromatin, three nuclease-sensitive regions were spaced approximately a nucleosome length apart, suggesting a single, regular arrangement of nucleosomes on most of the 5S DNA repeats. The observed nucleosome locations are discussed with respect to nucleotide sequences known to be important for expression of 5S RNA. Because the preferred locations appear to be reestablished in each repeating unit, despite spacer length heterogeneity, we suggest that the regular chromatin structure reflects the presence of a sequence-specific DNA-binding component on inactive 5S RNA genes.

In this paper, the author, after a general description of the geological character of the country, describes the superficial deposits which he divides into—1.The unstratified drift or boulder formation. This, the lower of the two superficial deposits, is characterised by the circumstance, that most of the materials have been derived from the rocks on which they now rest, or those in the vicinity. The fragments are angular, and altogether devoid of any regular arrangement. This unstratified drift, however, does contain boulders from distant localities, which may generally be traced. The appearances indicate that the materials have been transported from the northward, and also, to a less extent, from the southward, and, indeed, in various directions.

Abstract Morphometry and formation processes are key research problems in the study of aeolian sandy landforms. Based on morphometric parameters inferred from satellite images and the calculation of the drift potential (DP), we examined general characteristics of lunette dunes in the Tirari Desert, South Australia, along with their morphometry and formation processes to determine how this landform type initially formed and its relationship to surrounding linear dune distribution. Results show that the morphometric parameters of lunette dunes and connective lake systems exhibit moderate correlations. It suggests that the morphology of these dunes is controlled by the lakes. Spatially, the lunette dunes present regular arrangement, and the strike of their alignment are approximately in accordance with the linear dunes. The calculated DP implies that the lunette dunes developed under a low-wind-energy environment, which is a wind regime similar to that required for the formation of the surrounding linear dunes. Even though, the resultant DP demonstrates that the summer wind should be responsible for the growth of the lunette dunes. However, accompanied with the repeated drying of lakes and even its disappearance during the dune development process, it not only contributes to the development of lunette dunes but also promotes their transformation to linear dunes.

The statistical multiphase approach (MPA) proposed in the first part of this work to evaluate radiative properties of composite materials is applied to porous structures of opaque material and biological tissues. Radiative thermal conductivity is calculated for the bundle of circular rods, packed pebble beds, and metal foams. The results generally agree with the reference calculations by other methods. The small difference can be explained by different approaches to scattering and assumptions about the temperature distribution. Attenuation of light in skin tissues is calculated by the diffusion approximation. The attenuation coefficient generally agrees with the reference Monte Carlo simulation (MC). The difference observed at certain combination of parameters can be due to the assumption of regular arrangement of vessels at the MC simulation.

Abstract Background The sensitivity of regular arrangement of collecting venules (RAC)-positive pattern for predicting Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-negative status greatly altered from 93.8 to 48.0% in recent two decades of various studies, while the reason behind it remained obscure. The aim of this study was to investigate the value of RAC as an endoscopic feature for judging H. pylori status in routine endoscopy and reviewed the underlying mechanism. Methods A prospective study with high-definition non-magnifying endoscopy was performed. RAC-positive and RAC-negative patients were classified according to the collecting venules morphology of the lesser curvature in gastric corpus. Gastric biopsy specimens were obtained from the lesser and greater curvature of corpus with normal RAC-positive or abnormal RAC-negative mucosal patterns. Helicobacter pylori status was established by hematoxylin and eosin staining and immunohistochemistry. Results 41 RAC-positive and 124 RAC-negative patients were enrolled from June 2020 to September 2020. The prevalence of H. pylori infection in patients with RAC-positive pattern and RAC-negative pattern was 7.3% (3/41) and 71.0% (88/124), respectively. Among all 124 RAC-negative patients, 36 (29.0%) patients were H. pylori-negative status. Ten patients (32.3%) demonstrated RAC-positive pattern in 31 H. pylori-eradicated cases. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of RAC-positive pattern for predicting H. pylori-negative status were 51.4% (95% CI, 0.395–0.630), 96.7% (95% CI, 0.900–0.991), 92.7% (95% CI, 0.790–0.981), and 71.0% (95% CI, 0.620–0.786), respectively. Conclusions RAC presence can accurately rule out H. pylori infection of gastric corpus, and H. pylori-positive status cannot be predicted only by RAC absence in routine endoscopy. Trial registration The present study is a non-interventional trial.
