Michael M. Goodin, a distinguished plant virologist who was a Professor of Plant Pathology at the University of Kentucky, passed away on December 12, 2020, in Lexington, Kentucky, at the age of 53. Michael was born in Jamaica. He was an undergraduate at Brock University in Canada, where he received degrees in both Biology and Chemistry in 1989. He then moved to Pennsylvania State University, where he trained with C. P. Romaine and received MS and PhD degrees in Plant Pathology. He was a postdoctoral fellow with Andy Jackson at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1996 to 2002 and then joined the faculty in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Kentucky in 2002. His strong research record, outstanding work as an educator, and dedication to university, professional scientific, and community service led to his advancement to Professor in 2017. Michael was known throughout the virology community as a passionate scientist who believed in the power of research and education to change the world, as well as a kind, engaged, energetic, and highly interactive colleague. He will be profoundly missed.

In its third edition, the “William Morris Davis – Journal of Geomorphology” presents its second interview with geographers, to head the “Interviews” section, which opens each published issue. This time, it is the first international interview, carried out with Professor Philip van Beynen, from the University of South Florida, in the United States. Professor Philip van Beynen was interviewed on the topic “Karst in Urban Areas”, and brings important data on the subject, with beautiful illustrations and with examples from all over the world. The interview took place on September 17, 2020, with the participation of Vanda de Claudino-Sales (Professor of the Academic Master in Geography at the State University of Vale do Acarau-UVA) and Saulo Roberto Oliveira Vital (Professor of the Department of Geography and the Post-Graduate Program in Geography at the Federal University of Paraiba - UFPB), and was transcribed by Diego Nunes Valadares, master's student on Geography at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. Professor van Beynen was born in New Zealand, where he received his degree in Geography at the University of Auckland. He earned a master's degree from the same university, and a doctorate and post-doctorate from McMaster University, Canada. He has been a professor at the School of Geoscience at the University of South Florida since 2009, where he   has been developing research related to different components of karst environments. The interview shows his great expertise on the subject, and is very much worth to be read and seen even for those who are not specialists in karst.

The article provides an overview of ten diploma theses written under the supervision of Professor of Zoology Juhan Aul at the University of Tartu from 1958–1970. The theses deal with physical development of Estonian school students in two Estonian towns (Tartu and Pärnu) and nine districts (Tartu, Elva, Põlva, Räpina, Rapla, Keila, Pärnu, Võru, Harju) according to the then existing administrative division. The theses are based on the anthropological material collected from 1956–1966.The first part of the article briefly describes the period of nearly 202 years during which the scholars related to the University of Tartu have conducted various physical anthropological studies on Estonians. These years can conditionally be divided as follows: the first period, 1814–1927 – the period from Baer to Aul, the second period, 1927–1993 – the Aul period, the third period, from 1993 to the present – the period of the Centre for Physical Anthropology.The article describes some of the options the students had for participating in anthropological research. An overview is given of the beginning of anthropological research of children and school students in Estonia and in the world. The article acquaints the reader with the whole of the so-called Aul period and the diploma theses on Estonian school students’ physical development supervised by him.The second part gives an overview of the diploma theses.

October 2005 marks 50 years since the first images achieving atomic resolution were obtained by Erwin Miiller and Kanwar Bahadur at the Pennsylvania State University using field ion microscopy. An image from that seminal work is shown in Figure 1. Two separate meetings were held this year to commemorate this important event in the history of microscopy; the 50th Anniversary of Atomic Resolution Microscopy, held June 15-17, 2005 at Penn State and the Golden Anniversary of Atomic Resolution Imaging, a symposium at Microscopy and Microanalysis 2005 in Honolulu held July 31 to August 4, 2005. These celebrations were timed to coincide also with the World Year of Physics 2005 http://www. wyp2005.org/.

Raymond Reiter, Professor of computer science at the University of Toronto, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and winner of the 1993 – IJCAI Outstanding Research Scientist Award, died September 16, 2002, after a year-long struggle with cancer. Reiter, known throughout the world as “Ray,” made foundational contributions to artificial intelligence, knowledge representation and databases, and theorem proving.

The author is a Professor of Geography at the University of Toronto and former Director of the Institute for Environmental Studies. His research interests are in urban environmental management/urban infrastructure; adaptation to climate change; catastrophes, environmental liability and the insurance industry; and risk analysis and environmental finance. He has extensive overseas experience, especially in Africa and China. He was the Principal Investigator for the GIS-based Soil Erosion Management Project in North China and for the Toronto component of the Sustainable Water Management Project in the Beijing-Tianjin Region, both funded by CIDA. He has held teaching appointments at North-western University, McMaster University and Ibadan University, and has also taught short courses in Senegal, Malawi and Vietnam. He holds degrees in geography from Oxford (B.A., 1965), Pennsylvania State University (M.Sc., 1967) and Bristol University (Ph.D, 1971). His most recent books are Building the Ecological City, published by Woodhead Publishing in 2002 and Environmental Finance: A Guide to Environmental Risk Assessment and Financial Products (with Sonia Labatt) published by Wiley in 2002. The text that follows is an edited version of a paper presented at the international symposion on "The Natural City," Toronto, 23-25 June, 2004, sponsored by the University of Toronto's Division of the Environment, Institute for Environmental Studies, and the World Society for Ekistics.

The author is a Professor in the Department of Geography and Planning at the University at Albany, State University of New York, where he directs the Masters Program in Urban and Regional Planning. He is a member of the World Society for Ekistics (WSE), the American Institute of Certified Planners, the American Planning Association, the International Planning History Society, and many other professional and scholarly associations, and he has served as a consultant with the United Nations, UNICEF, USAID, and various projects funded by the World Bank and AID. His research and publications focus on: the history of ideas in planning and community development; metropolitan and regional development policies; the revitalization of old neighborhoods; disaster avoidance and relief; and, micro-enterprise development. The text that follows is a revised and extended version of a paper presented at the WSE Symposion "Defining Success of the City in the 21st Century," Berlin, 24-28 October, 2001.

With Bruno Nettl’s passing on 15 January this year, the world of ethnomusicology lost one of its major figures, a scholar who significantly contributed to its affirmation as an academic field worldwide, and who inspired and kept supporting generations of ethnomusicologists on their way to new heights. His lectures at the University of Ljubljana’s Faculty of Arts in 2007 raised lots of interest among the professors and students; at that occasion, he presented the Department of Musicology his collection of abstracts. Musicological Annual lost a respected member of its International Advisory Board and the author of the article “What Are the Great Discoveries of Your Field? Informal Comments About the Contributions of Ethnomusicology,” published in 2015. Nettl’s crossdisciplinary scholarship provides a broad and multi-layered picture of both selected musics and of ethnomusicology as a discipline.
