The article provides an overview of ten diploma theses written under the supervision of Professor of Zoology Juhan Aul at the University of Tartu from 1958–1970. The theses deal with physical development of Estonian school students in two Estonian towns (Tartu and Pärnu) and nine districts (Tartu, Elva, Põlva, Räpina, Rapla, Keila, Pärnu, Võru, Harju) according to the then existing administrative division. The theses are based on the anthropological material collected from 1956–1966.The first part of the article briefly describes the period of nearly 202 years during which the scholars related to the University of Tartu have conducted various physical anthropological studies on Estonians. These years can conditionally be divided as follows: the first period, 1814–1927 – the period from Baer to Aul, the second period, 1927–1993 – the Aul period, the third period, from 1993 to the present – the period of the Centre for Physical Anthropology.The article describes some of the options the students had for participating in anthropological research. An overview is given of the beginning of anthropological research of children and school students in Estonia and in the world. The article acquaints the reader with the whole of the so-called Aul period and the diploma theses on Estonian school students’ physical development supervised by him.The second part gives an overview of the diploma theses.

Throughout times, along with simpler papers (essays, reports, subject and research papers), students of different specialities at the University of Tartu have also done more serious research in many areas, including anthropology, under the supervision of lecturers. More than a quarter of century ago, before 1991, the students of the Soviet-time Tartu State University wrote, in addition to exercises in research, term papers, graduation theses and prize essays of Students Scientific Society (founded in 1948). The article will deal with 10 graduation theses compiled at the Chair of Zoology of Tartu State University from 1958–1970. These papers addressed Estonian school students’ physical development based on anthropological material collected from 1956–1967. In those years, the graduation thesis was a student’s independent research paper which was defended in front of a state examination board to complete the studies at the university. Particular attention is paid to the first of these graduation theses – the graduation thesis defended by 5th-year student Viivi Schüts in 1958, “On the physical development of school students of the town of Tartu” (in Estonian, on 94 pages in typescript, hard-cover). The article includes the structure of this research paper.

In its third edition, the “William Morris Davis – Journal of Geomorphology” presents its second interview with geographers, to head the “Interviews” section, which opens each published issue. This time, it is the first international interview, carried out with Professor Philip van Beynen, from the University of South Florida, in the United States. Professor Philip van Beynen was interviewed on the topic “Karst in Urban Areas”, and brings important data on the subject, with beautiful illustrations and with examples from all over the world. The interview took place on September 17, 2020, with the participation of Vanda de Claudino-Sales (Professor of the Academic Master in Geography at the State University of Vale do Acarau-UVA) and Saulo Roberto Oliveira Vital (Professor of the Department of Geography and the Post-Graduate Program in Geography at the Federal University of Paraiba - UFPB), and was transcribed by Diego Nunes Valadares, master's student on Geography at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. Professor van Beynen was born in New Zealand, where he received his degree in Geography at the University of Auckland. He earned a master's degree from the same university, and a doctorate and post-doctorate from McMaster University, Canada. He has been a professor at the School of Geoscience at the University of South Florida since 2009, where he   has been developing research related to different components of karst environments. The interview shows his great expertise on the subject, and is very much worth to be read and seen even for those who are not specialists in karst.

The Autor describe a training orientation experience intended for fourth and fifth year of secondary school students aimed at promoting conscious access to the university world and facilitating the process of building their own professional prefigurations. These paths led by career advisors, experts in the world of work and guidance representatives involved 16 classes from four institutes for a total of 278 students. Each meeting was structured in two moments: a Photolangage workshop and a seminar, which consisted in making the experts in the field talk with the students of the schools participating in the guidance activity. The Photolangage workshop was followed by a moment dedicated to the meeting with experts from the world of training present in the territory, each of whom described their field of action. As it is written in the Guidelines, the guidance activity should also be done by those who have specific professional skills, who are outside the school and who can introduce the girls and boys to the world of work in order to promote the process of work inclusion. The experts in the area working in the field of education were asked to present to the students the professional profiles for the degree course: social educators, child educators and trainers. The experts called to converse with the students each represented different areas of education and social work: one coordinator of an educational service for children, two company trainers, two social planners. Each of the eight meetings included, at the beginning of the activity, the administration of a semi-structured questionnaire aimed at surveying the students' previous knowledge about the educator's field of action, the skills of this professional profile, as well as future aspirations and expectations with respect to the guidance experience.

The deployment of the Albanian admirative as well as the evidential particles kinse ‘allegedly’ and gjoja ‘supposedly’ in Kosovar electronic news sources to render either dubitative or neutral reports — depending on both the source and the timing — contributed to the project of an independent Kosovo. The usages can be divided into three periods: 1994–1997, 1998–1999, and post-1999. During the first period, usage was exclusively dubitative and deployed for Serbian news sources. During the second period, which corresponded to the intensification of the armed uprising, usage shifted to neutrality, and during the third period, after the NATO bombing campaign, it returned somewhat to dubitativity, this time aimed at UN and NATO sources. The discussion demonstrates how pragmatics and grammatical categories contribute to the construction of political narratives and argues that a socially informed linguistic analysis is crucial to understanding how politics is performed in the world.

He is a member of the World Society for Ekistics (WSE), the American Institute of Certified Planners, the American Planning Association, the International Planning History Society, and many other professional and scholarly associations, and he has served as a consultant with the United Nations, UNICEF, USAID, and various projects funded by the World Bank and AID. His research and publications focus on: the history of ideas in planning and community development; metropolitan and regional development policies; the revitalization of old neighborhoods; disaster avoidance and relief; and, micro-enterprise development. The text that follows is a revised and extended version of a paper presented at the WSE Symposion "Defining Success of the City in the 21st Century," Berlin, 24-28 October, 2001.

This article discusses the results of a field study conducted in 2019 at Tomsk State University (TSU) and Tyumen State University (TyumSU). The purpose of the study is to investigate the motivations behind educators’ choice of their profession and the aspects they say as its advantages and disadvantages. Methodologically, the study is based on 43 in-depth interviews with lecturers of TSU and TyumSU. These universities are located in Siberian cities and are among the group of the leading higher education institutions in Russia. The study shows that the lecturers associate the benefits of work at the university with the opportunities provided by the ‘5-100 Project’ to attain the world standards; good working conditions; prestige of work at a reputable university; stability of university employment; feeling of belonging to the academic; and so on. Most educators are dissatisfied with such aspects of university work as bureaucratization; redundancies; short-term contracts; the lack of transparency and inefficiency in funds distribution; and irregular working hours. We found that despite some divergence of views, the faculty of the TSU and TyumSU share a lot of opinions on the advantages and disadvantages of university work. Thus, the cases of the two Siberian universities provide us with the insights into a larger picture of the Russian system of higher education. These findings can be useful for HR services of universities for recruiting and retaining personnel.

Based on the author's Master's thesis at the University of Helsinki in 2005, this article traces the reaction and response by the management of the Finnish alcohol monopoly Oy Alko Ab to the process of European economic integration between 1988 and 1994. The data for the study consist of archive materials, protocols and memoirs, earlier research and literature as well as interviews with key figures involved in the process. A distinction is made between four different periods in the management's reactions between 1988–1994. In the first period 1988–1989, the Alko management began to realise that European integration might have an impact on the company's operation. During the second period 1990–1991, there was a growing recognition that integration would affect the company in a major way and that it would be losing its import and export monopoly. At the same time, the Alko management began taking steps to strengthen the company's competitiveness and organisation. During the third period, from February 1992 to August 1992, the Alko management realised that the company's production and wholesale monopoly might also be under threat. They decided to fight to retain the company's three remaining monopoly rights and did so over the next six months until 25 August 1992, when the battle was limited to the monopoly of off-premise retail sales of alcoholic beverages. In the fourth period from August 1992 to May 1994, the Alko management moved to shore up the company's competitiveness and prepare for the eventuality of the company possibly losing its retail monopoly.

A Biochemical Society Focused Meeting on bacteriocins was held at the University of Nottingham on 16–18 July 2012 to mark the retirement of Professor Richard James and honour a scientific career of more than 30 years devoted to an understanding of the biology of colicins, bacteriocins produced by Escherichia coli. This meeting was the third leg of a triumvirate of symposia that included meetings at the Île de Bendor, France, in 1991 and the University of East Anglia, Norwich, U.K., in 1998, focused on bringing together leading experts in basic and applied bacteriocin research. The symposium which attracted 70 attendees consisted of 18 invited speakers and 22 selected oral communications spread over four themes: (i) Role of bacteriocins in bacterial ecology, (ii) Mode of action of bacteriocins, (ii) Mechanisms of bacteriocin import across the cell envelope, and (iv) Biotechnological and biomedical applications of bacteriocins. Speakers and poster presenters travelled from around the world, including the U.S.A., Japan, Asia and Europe, to showcase the latest developments in their scientific research.

From an analysis of the response by rural high school students in Grades X, XI and XII to a questionnaire derived by Messick from items related to Murray's needs, Anderson and Traub claimed the existence of a general factor of social desirability with its psychological correlate in the form of two extroverted dimensions, social extroversion and impulsivity. Implicit in this work are two hypotheses which were tested in the current study: that this general factor would be sustained at the adult level and that its greater impact on male than on female responses would also continue. From an analysis of responses by students in the first and in the third or fourth years of a university program, no support was found for these hypotheses.
