TiO2-ZrO2composite film with the grain size of 50 nm was synthesized by electric field and heat (EF&H) treatments. Portions of O atoms in the TiO2network structure were replaced by N atoms as revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses, suggesting formation of a nonstoichiometric compoundTiO2-xNxon the composite film. The UV-Vis spectra of the film suggested that the visible light with wavelength of 550 nm could be absorbed for the N-doped composite film after EF&H treatment in comparison to a cutoff wavelength of 400 nm for the composite film without EF treatment. Photocatalytic experiments showed that the degradation rate of methylene blue by N-doped composite films increased significantly under visible light irradiation. The partial replacement of O by doped N played a very important role in narrowing the band gap and improving the visible light photocatalytic reactivity.

A novel photo-Fenton catalyst named Ag/AgCl/MIL-101(Fe) was synthesized by the method of precipitation and photo reduction and characterized by X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra. Moreover, the catalytic activity of the synthesized catalyst was tested using methylene blue (MB) as the target pollutant. The obtained results illustrated that the plasmonic material Ag/AgCl was successfully loaded on MIL-101(Fe) and the obtained catalyst exhibited an excellent catalytic activity under visible light at the neutral pH. According to the analyses of Plackett-Burman and Box-Behnken design, the optimum conditions for MB degradation were obtained. Under these conditions, the MB decolorization and mineralization efficiencies could reach to 99.75% and 65.43%, respectively. The recycling experiments also showed that the as-prepared catalyst displayed good reusability. In addition, the possible reaction mechanisms for the heterogeneous photo-Fenton system catalyzed by Ag/AgCl/MIL-101(Fe) were derived. The synthesized catalyst provides a promising approach to degrade organic pollutants in waste water.

Photothermal materials are attracting more and more attention. In this research, we synthesized a ferrocene-containing polymer with magnetism and photothermal properties. The resulting polymer was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Its photo-thermocatalytic activity was investigated by choosing methylene blue (MB) as a model compound. The degradation percent of MB under an irradiated 808 nm laser reaches 99.5% within 15 min, and the degradation rate is 0.5517 min−1, which is 145 times more than that of room temperature degradation. Under irradiation with simulated sunlight, the degradation rate is 0.0092 min−1, which is approximately 2.5 times more than that of room temperature degradation. The present study may open up a feasible route to degrade organic pollutants.

A visible-light-responsive TiO2-xNx photocatalyst was prepared by a very simple method. Ammonia solution was used as nitrogen resource in this paper. The TiO2-xNx photocatalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), UV-Vis diffuse reflection spectra (DRS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The ethylene was selected as a target pollutant under visible light excitation to evaluate the activity of this photocatalyst. The new prepared TiO2-xNx photocatalyst with strong photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation was demonstrated in the experiment.

SrSn(OH)6 precursors synthesized by a cyclic microwave radiation (CMR) process were calcined at 900°C for 3 h to form rod-like SrSnO3. Further, the rod-like SrSnO3 and AgNO3 in ethylene glycol (EG) were ultrasonically vibrated to form rod-like Ag/SrSnO3 composites, characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron microscopy (EM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and UV-visible analysis. The photocatalyses of rod-like SrSnO3, 1 wt%, 5 wt%, and 10 wt% Ag/SrSnO3 composites were studied for degradation of methylene blue (MB, C16H18N3SCl) dye under ultraviolet (UV) radiation. In this research, the 5 wt% Ag/SrSnO3 composites showed the highest activity, enhanced by the electron-hole separation process. The photoactivity became lower by the excessive Ag nanoparticles due to the negative effect caused by reduction in the absorption of UV radiation.

A visible-light responsive CdS/ZnO nanocomposite photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by precipitation of CdS nanoparticles, using Cd (NO3)2 and Na2S as starting materials, on ZnO nanoparticles and then calcined at 400°C for 2 hours. The effects of the mole ratio of CdS and ZnO in the composites on their phase, morphology, and surface area were investigated by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunauer Emmett Teller method (BET), respectively. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue solution in the presence of composite products under visible-light irradiation was investigated. The results showed that the mole ratio of CdS and ZnO played a significant role on photocatalytic performance. The highest photocatalytic activity was obtained from the CdS/ZnO nanocomposite with mole ratio of 1:4, which is higher than that of pure CdS and pure ZnO.

Different organic pollutants have been remediated photo catalytically by applying perovskite photocatalysts. Atrazine (ATR) is a pesticide commonly detected as a pollutant in drinking, surface and ground water. Herein, FeYO3@rGO heterojunction was synthesized and applied for photooxidation decomposition of ATR. First, FeYO 3nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared via routine sol-gel. After that, FeYO3 NPs were successfully incorporated with different percentages (5, 10, 15 and 20 wt.%) of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) in the synthesis of novel FeYO3@rGO photocatalyst. Morphological, structural, surface, optoelectrical and optical characteristics of constructed materials were identified via X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), adsorption/desorption isotherms, diffusive reflectance (DR) spectra, and photoluminescence response (PL). Furthermore, photocatalytic achievement of the constructed materials was evaluated via photooxidative degradation of ATR. Various investigations affirmed the usefulness of rGO incorporation on the advancement of formed photocatalysts. Actually, novel nanocomposite containing rGO (15 wt.%) possessed diminished bandgap energy, as well as magnified visible light absorption. Furthermore, such nanocomposite presented exceptional photocatalytic achievement when exposed to visible light as ATR was perfectly photooxidized over finite amount (1.6 g · L-1) from the optimized photocatalyst when illuminated for 30 min. The advanced photocatalytic performance of constructed heterojunctions could be accredited mainly to depressed recombination amid induced charges. The constructed FeYO3@rGO nanocomposite is labelled as efficient photocatalyst for remediation of herbicides from aquatic environments.

Lanthanum doped TiO2 powders were prepared by hydrolysis of titanium tetra-n-butyl oxide and La (NO3)3 in solution. The resulting powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activities of doped samples were evaluated by the decomposition of methylene blue under visible light irradiation. The XRD results showed that the doping of lanthanum could not only efficiently inhibit the grain growth but also suppress the phase transition of anatase to rutile. UV-Vis spectroscopy of lanthanum doping TiO2 indicated that the absorption onset red-shifted to the visible light region. XPS results revealed that La2O3 had formed which could enhance the surface area. The degradation rates of methylene blue verified that the visible light photocatalytic activity of TiO2 has been enhanced by the doping of lanthanum.

A silicon dioxide/carbon nano onions/titanium dioxide (SiO2/CNOs/TiO2) composite was synthesized by a simple sol-gel method and characterized by the methods of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-Vis DRS). In this work, the photocatalytic activity of the SiO2/CNOs/TiO2 photocatalyst was assessed by testing the degradation rate of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light. The results indicated that the samples exhibited the best photocatalytic activity when the composite consisted of 3% CNOs and the optimum dosage of SiO2/CNOs/TiO2(3%) was 1.5 g/L as evidenced by the highest RhB degradation rate (96%). The SiO2/CNOs/TiO2 composite greatly improved the quantum efficiency of TiO2. This work provides a new option for the modification of subsequent nanocomposite oxide nanoparticles.

ABSTRACTA novel coating architecture is being examined for enhancing the high temperature, oxidation resistance of molybdenum. The coating incorporates a thin, composite film of MoSi2+1.96 mole fraction SiC in order to match the coefficients of thermal expansion between the molybdenum substrate and the coating. Since the as-deposited composite film is amorphous in nature, a diffusion anneal treatment is carried out at 1000°C to achieve crystallization of the film. In this paper, a detailed examination of the Mo-MoSi2+1.96 SiC interface will be presented. The microstructural features of the composite films will be discussed based on electron microscopy, auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and X-ray diffraction analysis. Finally, a novel diffusion barrier layer for minimizing silicon and carbon diffusion from the coating to the substrate will be discussed.

The C, N, S tri-doped TiO2 with high visible-light photo-catalysis effect was successfully prepared by mixing thiourea with the self-prepared TiO2 powder through calcining for 2h at 450°C. The TiO2 powder was obtained by homogeneous precipitation method using the metatitanic acid instead of expensive chemical reagents contained Ti as raw material. The effect of doping materials and methods on the photo-degradation rate of methylene blue and dyes was studied. The characterizations of the doped TiO2 were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-visible absorption spectra (UV-vis). The results showed that this sample was the anatase TiO2 and contained elements C, N, S. The sample exhibited a significant response to ultraviolet and visible light. In the photo-degradation experiment, the C, N, S, tridoped-TiO2 could decolorize methylene blue and textile dyes quickly, and the photo-degradation rate of methylene blue could reach upward 98% after 3 hours under the different light sources.
