The consequences of sleep deprivation and sleepiness have been noted as the most important health problem in our modern society among shift workers. The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of sleep disorders and their possible effects on work performance in two groups of Iranian shift workers and nonshift workers. This study was designed as a cross-sectional study. The data were collected by PSQI, Berlin questionnaire, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Insomnia Severity Index, and RLS Questionnaire. Occupational impact of different sleep disorders was detected by Occupational Impact of Sleep Disorder questionnaire. These questionnaires were filled in by 210 shift workers and 204 nonshift workers. There was no significant difference in the age, BMI, marital status, and years of employment in the two groups. Shift workers scored significantly higher in the OISD. The prevalence of insomnia, poor sleep quality, and daytime sleepiness was significantly higher in shift workers. Correlations between OISD scores and insomnia, sleep quality, and daytime sleepiness were significant. We concluded that sleep disorders should receive more attention as a robust indicator of work limitation.

ObjectiveInsufficient sleep duration and quality has negative effects on athletic performance, injury susceptibility and athlete development. This study aimed to assess the sleep characteristics of professional Qatar Stars League (QSL) soccer players.MethodsIn a cross-sectional study, QSL players (n=111; 23.7±4.8 years) completed three questionnaires to screen sleep disorders: (1) Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), (2) Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and (3) Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Poor sleep quality was defined as PSQI≥5, excessive daytime sleepiness was defined by ESS>8 and insomnia was defined as ISI≥11.ResultsThe prevalence of poor sleep quality (PSQI≥5) was 68.5%, with subthreshold insomnia (ISI≥11) 27.0% and daytime sleepiness 22.5% (ESS>8). Sleep quality was positively associated with insomnia (r=0.42, p<0.001) and daytime sleepiness (r=0.23, p=0.018). Age, anthropometry, body composition and ethnicity were not associated with any of the reported sleep quality parameters.ConclusionThe prevalence of poor sleep quality (68.5%) reported should concern practitioners. Increasing awareness of the importance of sleep relative to athletic performance, recovery, injury and illness appears prudent. Further, regular qualitative/quantitative sleep monitoring may help target subsequent evidence-informed interventions to improve sleep in those demonstrating undesirable sleep traits.

Sleep disorders are prevalent occupational health problems among shift workers, especially healthcare workers with long shifts. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter related to circadian variations accompanied by shift work. A cross-sectional study was performed on 73 nurses at a tertiary hospital in Cairo, Egypt, to assess sleep quality among shift work nurses (SWNs), to determine blood serotonin level, and its relation to shift work and sleep quality. A demographic and occupational history questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, and measurement of blood serotonin were carried out to the studied group. The data were analyzed using SPSS 25, and descriptive statistics, unpaired t-test, ANOVA, Kruskal–Wallis Test, Chi-square, Spearman correlation, and multivariate regression analysis were utilized. The results showed that the mean PSQI global score was significantly higher among SWNs than non-shift work nurses (NSWNs) and was the highest (10.32 ± 3.56 and 10.22 ± 2.4, respectively) among rotatory and fixed night shift nurses. Blood serotonin showed highly significant differences between SWNs over NSWNs ( p = 0.001), and mostly reduced among rotatory and fixed night shift nurses (66.7% and 65%, respectively). Moreover, there were highly significant differences in serotonin levels between poor and good sleep quality nurses ( p < 0.001), and most of the poor sleep quality nurses (62.7%) had low serotonin levels. Abnormal serotonin level (odds = 246.5) and working years (odds = 1.2) were statistically significant predictors of poor sleep quality. In conclusion, SWNs, especially rotating and night shift nurses, suffer from poor sleep quality associated with abnormal levels of blood serotonin.

Introduction: Sleep Quality disturbances are common among nurses especially those working in stressful situations such as emergency room. Additionally, sleep quality disturbances were found to interfere with nurses’ quality of life and work performance. No studies have found the effect of fluctuated shifts on sleep quality among nurses. Objectives: To examine the impact of shift fluctuations on sleep quality among nurses working in the emergency room. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive design was employed. Five emergency rooms were selected from public and private hospitals located in Amman, Jordan. The selected hospitals were also referral sites with capacity of more than 200 beds. A convenient sample of nurses who had a minimum of six months experience in the emergency room and working on rotating shifts were eligible for participation. Nurses with known chronic respiratory problems and sleep apnea were excluded. A self-administered questionnaire including a demographic and work-related questions, and the Arabic version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were provided. Shift fluctuations were clustered based on interchanging between morning, evening and night shifts. Results: A total of 179 emergency nurses working in rotating shifts participated in the study. The majority of the nurses were poor sleepers. The study found no significant differences between different shifts interchange and sleep quality. However, interchange between morning and evening shift reported the highest sleep disturbance. Sleep quality was positively correlated with the length of experience, while negatively correlated with the age and the number of monthly shifts. Nurses who declared higher satisfaction and ability to work under pressure revealed better sleep quality. Conclusion: Emergency room nurses showed poor sleep quality. While there was no specific shift interchange cluster inducing poor sleep quality, some demographical and work-related characteristics indicated their influence on sleep quality.

OBJECTIVE: It was to evaluate the relationships between fatigue and excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep quality, depression and anxiety. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study on 98 unselected adult patients with epilepsy (PWE) at a tertiary center. It used clinical-sociodemographic characteristics, fatigue measured by the SF-36 vitality subscale (VsSF-36) and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Beck Depression and Anxiety Inventories. RESULTS: We observed that our patients presented vitality or fatigue similar to drivers with chronic headaches evaluated in the same city. Fatigue was related to depression, anxiety and sleep quality, but not to daytime sleepiness. A multiple linear regression analysis was conducted and we observed that fatigue was independently correlated with depression and quality of sleep. However, no significant difference was observed regarding seizure frequency or number of antiepileptic drugs. CONCLUSION: Fatigue needs to be studied more in PWE, and its risk factors need to be controlled, along with sleep quality and psychiatric disorders.

Introduction: the COVID-19 pandemic incited unprecedented global restrictions on society’s behavior. Home detachment and isolation measures applied during the COVID-19 pandemic can result in problems with sleep quality. It is an important measure to reduce the risk of infection from the COVID-19 outbreak. Objective: to investigate the existence of a difference between the quality of sleep before and during the home distance imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Methods: cross-sectional web-based survey was sent using different conventional social media to collect data from the study population. The evaluated group was composed of 124 subjects, 57 of whom were male and 67 were female from the city of Rio Branco / AC. For this study, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire (PSQI-BR) and a socio-demographic questionnaire were used. The volunteers received a link along with the description and purpose of the study. Finally, data analysis was performed using SPSS 22.0 software. Results: sleep quality worsened significantly during home distance in four sleep components (subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep drowsiness and overall PSQI score). During social distance, poor sleep was greater among respondents (OR = 5.68; 95% CI = 1.80–17.82; p = 0.70). Conclusion: the results indicated that there was a significant difference between the quality of sleep before and during home detachment and sleep disturbance and the subjective quality of sleep before and during the period of the outbreak of COVID-19 were the components that most worsened in the state of sleep

LATAR BELAKANGPekerja bergilir (shift workers) banyak dijumpai pada masyarakat industri dan mempunyai efek yang negatif terhadap kualitas tidur. Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) adalah gejala dari gangguan tidur berupa rasa kantuk pada siang hari yang berlebihan hingga mengganggu aktivitas. Gejala ini dapat menimbulkan dampak merugikan bagi pekerja dan perusahaan. Kualitas tidur, kerja shift, gaya hidup, usia dan jenis kelamin merupakan faktor risiko dari EDS. Seorang pekerja bergilir yang mengalami EDS memiliki risiko kecelakaan kerja yang tinggi. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk menentukan hubungan antara kualitas tidur dan EDS pada pekerja bergilir. METODEStudi ini menggunakan desain cross-sectional dengan jumlah subjek penelitian sebanyak 57 pekerja bergilir. Pengumpulan data mengenai usia dan jenis kelamin dilakukan dengan menggunakan kuesioner. Kualitas tidur diukur dengan kuesioner Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) dan Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) diukur dengan Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS). Data dianalisis menggunakan uji korelasi Spearman dan uji Mann Whitney. HASILHasil uji normalitas menunjukkan data yang dikumpulkan tidak tersebar secara normal. Nilai median subjek pekerja besarnya 27 tahun dan sebagian besar subjek adalah laki-laki sebanyak 44 (77.1%) orang.Tidak didapatkan perbedaan yang bermakna antara jenis kelamin dan EDS (p=0.396). Didapatkan hubungan yang sedang dan bermakna antara kualitas tidur dan EDS (r=0.545; 0=0.000). Usia subjek tidak berhubungan secara bermakna dengan EDS (r=0.124; p=0.359). KESIMPULANPenelitian ini menunjukkan hubungan bermakna antara kualitas tidur dan excessive daytime sleepiness pada pekerja, tetapi tidak terdapat perbedaan nilai median EDS antara laki-laki dan perempuan.

Abstract: Introduction: Changes in the Sleep/Wake Cycle (SWC) of university students can have consequences on physical, mental and social health. In addition, some behaviors adopted at this stage may be associated with SWC impairment. Objective: Therefore, this study aims to identify which factors of social determinants of health (SDH) are associated with poor sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in university students. Method: This is a cross-sectional study that included 298 university students, aged between 18 and 35 years; 73.2% of the students were females and from the countryside of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Data were collected from the following questionnaires: Health and Sleep, Munich Chronotype Questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Epworth Sleepiness Scale. To assess the association of SDH with poor sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness, Poisson Regression with robust variance was performed. Result: The prevalence of poor sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness among the university students was 79.2% and 51.3%, respectively. Between the intermediate determinants of health, a higher prevalence rate of poor sleep quality was observed in students who reported health problems in the previous month (18.4%), smoked (23.5%), drank stimulating beverages close to bedtime (25.8%) and those who used electronic devices before bedtime during the week (18.4%) when compared to those who did not have these behaviors. Regarding excessive daytime sleepiness, students who justified bedtime during the week and wake-up time at the weekend because of the academic demand showed, respectively, 27% and 34% lower prevalence of EDS than the group that did not have these behaviors. Conclusions: The high prevalence of poor sleep quality and EDS observed among university students was associated to biological factors and most of them, behavioral factors.

Excessive smartphone use has a higher risk of sleep disturbances and affects a person’s sleep quality.  The purpose of this research is to determine the relationship between respondent’s characteristics and smartphone addiction to the sleep quality of adolescents at Budi Cendikia Islamic School Depok.  This type of research is quantitative with a descriptive analytic approach and a cross sectional research design.  The population is all 359 students.  Sampling in this study using stratified random sampling technique with 112 respondents.  The SAS-SV questionnaire was used to measure the level of smartphone addiction, while the PSQI questionnaire was used to measure sleep quality in adolescents.  The statistical test used Chi Square and Mann Whitney with a significance level of α = 0.05.  The results of the univariate statistical test showed that most of the respondents were male (52.7%), 13 years old (35.7%), had a high rate of smartphone addiction (61.6%), and poor sleep quality (70.5%).  Meanwhile, the results of the bivariate statistical test showed that there was a significant difference between gender (p = 0.020) and smartphone addiction (p = 0.007) with sleep quality, but there was no significant difference between age and sleep quality (p = 0.938). This study concludes that there is a relationship between gender and smartphone addiction on students' sleep quality, but there is no relationship between age and sleep quality of students.  Hence, it is necessary to limit the use of smartphones so that smartphone addiction can be minimized and sleep quality is good.”

Recent contributions have reported sleep disorders as one of the health impairment outcomes of workaholism. A possible factor affecting the sleep-wake cycle might be the intensive use of smartphones. The current study aimed to explore the role of intensive smartphone use in the relationship between workaholism and the sleep-wake cycle. Two serial multiple mediation models were tested on a sample of 418 employees, who filled self-report questionnaires measuring workaholism, use of smartphones, sleep quality and daytime sleepiness, using conditional process analysis for testing direct and indirect effects. Results supported our hypotheses regarding two serial multiple mediation models—that intensive smartphone use and poor sleep quality mediated the relationship between workaholism and daytime sleepiness, and that smartphone use and daytime sleepiness mediated the relationship between workaholism and poor quality of sleep. Although the use of a cross-sectional design and the snowball technique for collecting data can be considered as possible limitations, the current study is one of the first to document the potential detrimental role of the intensive smartphone use on the workaholism-sleep disorders relationship.
