Variation of installed industrial capacity has been found to follow a cyclic pattern. This paper discusses the application of control theory to the problem of the timely acquisition of extra production capacity. The control system based model presented here is compared with a System Dynamics model proposed by Sterman. Key differences are the method of implementing rational decisions about deployment of extra capacity and the use of a nonlinear APVIOBPCS inventory model. Benefits of this new model are a more measurable process and the ability to select parameter values to optimise capacity deployment. Simulation of the model indicates that the results found by Sterman underestimate the production backlog and time taken to reach equilibrium. The use of a Proportional, Integral, and Derivative (PID) controller in the capacity control loop model illustrates that it is possible not only to alter the backlog levels but at the same time to reduce the sales force and improve the revenue. The model also shows clearly that the impact of not increasing capacity promptly results in catastrophic failure of sales as a structural, rather than a business, problem. This model is simple enough to be implemented as a spreadsheet for use as a guide by managers.

Abstract When an industrial robot uses a gripper with half hardness and flexibility to carry a hollow sand core, mechanical vibration will cause the gripper to grasp the sand core unsteadily or cracks in the sand core due to excessive pressure. In this paper, the mathematical model is constructed based on the elements such as gripper structure, clamping pressure and mechanical vibration, the system stability is analyzed, the PID controller is added for correction, the parameter values of Kp, Ti and Td are set by Ziegler-Nichols method, the transfer function of PID controller is obtained, and then the corrected system function is calculated. The dynamic response performance of the system is simulated and analyzed by Matlab / Simulink, the parameters in the PID controller are adjusted, and the overshoot of the system is reduced from 85% to 25%, which effectively reduces the impact of mechanical vibration interference on the sand core and realizes the optimal control of the system.

Abstract Parameter estimation and wastewater characterization are crucial for modelling of the membrane enhanced biological phosphorus removal (MEBPR) process. Prior to determining the values of a subset of kinetic and stoichiometric parameters used in ASM No. 2 (ASM2), the carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus fractions of influent wastewater at the University of British Columbia (UBC) pilot plant were characterized. It was found that the UBC wastewater contained fractions of volatile acids (SA), readily fermentable biodegradable COD (SF) and slowly biodegradable COD (XS) that fell within the ASM2 default value ranges. The contents of soluble inert COD (SI) and particulate inert COD (XI) were somewhat higher than ASM2 default values. Mixed liquor samples from pilot-scale MEBPR and conventional enhanced biological phosphorus removal (CEBPR) processes operated under parallel conditions, were then analyzed experimentally to assess the impact of operation in a membrane-assisted mode on the growth yield (YH), decay coefficient (bH) and maximum specific growth rate of heterotrophic biomass (µH). The resulting values for YH, bH and µH were slightly lower for the MEBPR train than for the CEBPR train, but the differences were not statistically significant. It is suggested that MEBPR simulation using ASM2 could be accomplished satisfactorily using parameter values determined for a conventional biological phosphorus removal process, if MEBPR parameter values are not available.

To solve the urbanization and the economic challenges, a virtual track train (VTT) transportation system has been proposed in China. To evaluate the dynamic behavior of the VTT, a spatial dynamics model has been developed that considers the suspension system and the steering system. Additionally, the model takes into account road irregularity to make simulations more realistic. Based on the newly proposed dynamic model and a designed proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller, simulation frames of the vehicle and of the VTT are established with the path-tracking performance. The results show that the vehicle and the VTT can run along a desired lane with allowable errors, verifying the proposed model. The vehicle and VTT with the four-wheel steering system show a better dynamic performance than the models with the front-wheel steering system in the curved section. Moreover, the simulation frame can be further applied to dynamics-related assessments, parameter optimization and active suspension control strategy.

AbstractEach cancer type has its own molecular signaling network. Analyzing the dynamics of molecular signaling networks can provide useful information for identifying drug target genes. In the present study, we consider an on-network dynamics model—the outside competitive dynamics model—wherein an inside leader and an opponent competitor outside the system have fixed and different states, and each normal agent adjusts its state according to a distributed consensus protocol. If any normal agent links to the external competitor, the state of each normal agent will converge to a stable value, indicating support to the leader against the impact of the competitor. We determined the total support of normal agents to each leader in various networks and observed that the total support correlates with hierarchical closeness, which identifies biomarker genes in a cancer signaling network. Of note, by experimenting on 17 cancer signaling networks from the KEGG database, we observed that 82% of the genes among the top 3 agents with the highest total support are anticancer drug target genes. This result outperforms those of four previous prediction methods of common cancer drug targets. Our study indicates that driver agents with high support from the other agents against the impact of the external opponent agent are most likely to be anticancer drug target genes.

PurposeThis paper, with the tobacco industry as the background, establishes an indicator system for tobacco supply chain performance evaluation using the FAHP method.Design/methodology/approachBased on the relevant data of tobacco enterprises in Guangxi, the paper calculates the performance values of tobacco companies in various cities of Guangxi, and through the analysis of each indicator and the performance values of each city, the authors find that the improvement ability has a major impact on tobacco supply chain performance. Then, the paper establishes a system dynamics model to further demonstrate the impact of information digitalization on the performance of the tobacco supply chain in Guangxi, thus providing theoretical support for building digital tobacco logistics in Guangxi.FindingsThe findings of the study show that the performance of the tobacco supply chains in various cities of Guangxi is generally at the level of “Pass–Good,” which can barely meet the requirements of tobacco supply chain operation, but there is still plenty of room for improvement.Originality/valueThe authors show that digital and IT-based empowerment can maximize the performance of Guangxi's tobacco logistics performance.

Autoregulatory dynamics of the cardiovascular system play an important role in maintaining oxygenated blood transportation throughout the human body. In this work, a feedback dynamics model of the cardiovascular system with respect to heartrate and peripheral vascular resistance effects on longer-term blood pressure changes in the systemic circulation is presented. The model is identified from data taken from a swine test subject, instrumented in part with a wearable, non-invasive sensor for estimating peripheral arterial radius. Comparative simulations for the open and close loop model highlight significantly changed hemodynamics after hemorrhage.

<p>"Applications that gather dust... Technologies no one understands... Information that's ignored... [thus, there is still very much a need to] pay attention to Information behaviour" (Davenport, 1997, p.2). Human Information Behaviour is as important a concept today as it has ever been, as there are still millions of dollars going into improving information technology. While information seeking behaviour has been rigorously studied over the years, information use has not received the same attention. Neither has the IT artefact or choice of such technologies at the hands of users of information. This research paper aims to produce a taxonomy of the information use behaviours and ICT and non-ICT resource use of IT academics through a qualitative study involving both observation (incorporating thinking aloud) and structured face-to-face interview techniques. The research question asks "How do IT Academics manage the integration between various Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and non-ICT sources to support their information behaviours (IB) and, therefore, achieve their desired outcome? We observed and interviewed six IT academics carrying out their normal working activities, looking into actual information events as they occurred, information outcomes, information behaviours, and the technologies used by academics in their daily interactions with information. We developed a systems model, informed by activity theory, to frame the discussion. What was uncovered by the study was a tendency for academics to converge on a single technology - that of the laptop. This together with email was what academics tended to prefer to use, both at the office and in their homes; a surprising find as it was assumed that there would be a plethora of different ICTs in use. We found that technologies contributed to a blurring of the work/life equilibrium for many academics. Academics did exhibit a wide range of behaviours in their laptop and email use. Many of them were relatively unproductive, and involved moving information from one place, or one form to another, and finally ending in deletion rather than active use. Many of our interviewees reflected a need to use their time wisely through time management, and the impact of email on time management. These results also yielded the justification of Activity Theory which was used in the study, and of the systems framework which was constructed for the study. The study also confirmed the importance of environmental influences on academic's working lives, which tended to create a somewhat cyclic nature to their information events. Overall, it was not clear that patterns of use of ICTs contributed to effective information use behaviour by IT academics.</p>

Consumer promotions should stimulate purchases, sustain brand-name recognition, and gain audience participation. Themes are underlying messages. Media should be selected. In this way include direct mail, newspapers, magazines, television, the personal sales force, and group meetings. The duration of a sales promotion is set. The feasibility of shared sales promotions is weighed.

The objectives are to know: (1) the impact of cooking oil price increasing to the feasibility of tempe chips home industry; (2) income decreasing of tempe chips home industry after cooking oil price increasing; (3)factors affecting the profit of tempe chips home industry; (4) strategy of the tempe chips home industry when the production cost increase as cooking oil price increase. The research area is Rawalo sub-district, Banyumas district. Data collected by census method of 49 tempe home industries. Analyses used are RIC ratio, 1C/Cratio, BEP production, BEP revenue, BEP price, and Unit-Output-Price Cobb-Douglas Profit Function. The results show that: (1) tempe chips home industries have to be maintained although cooking oil price increasing has increased the product's price also; (2) after cooking oil price increasing period, tempe chips home industry has decreasing income; (3) UOP Cobb-Douglas Profit Function shows that cooking oil price, soybean price, cassava powder price, production capacity, dummy variable of before and after increasing cooking oil price period affect the profit function of tempe chips home industry; (4) strategy have been practiced by tempe chips home industries tempe chips product's size, decrease the tempe chips per pack capacity, decrease the production capacity, decrease the production frequency, and add cassava in the processing of tempe making.
