This paper is using weather parameters to investigate the effect of refractivity on propagation in the first kilometer of the atmosphere over the English Channel for a long transhorizon path of 140 km. Different refractivity profiles are constructed based on meteorological data taken from the UK Meteorological Office in order to investigate the effects of refractivity on propagation. The analysis is made for the hourly experimental path loss between the transmitter and receiver obtained from the experimental setup comprised of two communication links. The frequency of operation of the first link is 2015 MHz and that of the second link is 240 MHz. Parabolic equation method is modelled to get an hourly modelled path loss corresponding to each hourly experimental path loss to be analyzed for the said communication links. The correlation between the modelled path loss and experimental path loss is computed for refractivity distribution recommended by the ITU and predicted profiles. It is inferred from the simulated and experimental results that little or no influence exists by the evaporation duct upon path loss at 2015 MHz specifically for a long path of 140 km over the sea.

AbstractErosion rates of wind turbine blades are not constant, and they depend on many external factors including meteorological differences relating to global weather patterns. In order to track the degradation of the turbine blades, it is important to analyse the distribution and change in weather conditions across the country. This case study addresses rainfall in Western Europe using the UK and Ireland data to create a relationship between the erosion rate of wind turbine blades and rainfall for both countries. In order to match the appropriate erosion data to the meteorological data, 2 months of the annual rainfall were chosen, and the differences were analysed. The month of highest rain, January and month of least rain, May were selected for the study. The two variables were then combined with other data including hailstorm events and locations of wind turbine farms to create a general overview of erosion with relation to wind turbine blades.

In the last years, many analyses from acoustic signal processing have been used for different applications. In most cases, these sensor systems are based on the determination of times of flight for signals from every transducer. This paper presents a flat plate generalization method for impact detection and location over linear links or bars-based structures. The use of three piezoelectric sensors allow to achieve the position and impact time while the use of additional sensors lets cover a larger area of detection and avoid wrong timing difference measurements. An experimental setup and some experimental results are briefly presented.

Abstract. Wet grasslands are being restored across the UK and Europe to reinstate their high biodiversity following over 50 years of drainage and conversion to arable agriculture. The water balance of many wet grasslands is dominated by precipitation and evaporation and it is essential to quantify evaporation rates to understand the hydrological functioning of wetlands and the implications for water resources in catchments where wetlands are being restored. This paper considers data from direct measurements of evaporation from the Pevensey Levels wet grassland using the eddy correlation method. Equations are derived to predict actual evaporation using meteorological data on the site or from standard meteorological station observations. It was found that evaporation could be estimated reliably from meteorological variables, such as wind speed, temperature and humidity and by water availability. It was also found that when water availability is high, evaporation is high and may exceed reference evaporation values, raising questions over the deployment of the two-step Penman-Monteith model unless reliable crop coefficients and relative evaporation figures can be determined.

This work presents an experimental and theoretical combined study of the effects of the elastic rubber blocks with different surface modifications on the friction-induced stick–slip oscillation and wear of a brake pad sample in sliding contact with an automobile brake disc. The experiments are conducted on the customized experimental setup in a pad-on-disc configuration. The experimental results show that (1) the friction system with the plain rubber block still exhibits visible stick–slip oscillation, but the intensity of the stick–slip oscillation is reduced to a certain degree compared with the Original friction system (without rubber block); (2) the grooved rubber blocks display a better ability to reduce the stick–slip oscillation compared with the plain rubber block; (3) the rubber blocks with a vertical groove (perpendicular to the relative velocity) or a horizontal groove (parallel to the relative velocity) or a diagonal groove (45° inclined to the relative velocity) on their surfaces can suppress the stick–slip oscillation more effectively with various degrees of success. The experimental results also reveal the varying effects of the different rubber blocks on wear. To explain the experimental phenomenon reasonably, a theoretical analysis is conducted to investigate the effects of different rubber blocks on both stick–slip oscillation and wear using ABAQUS. Furthermore, the analysis of the contact pressure on the pad interfaces and the deformation of the rubber blocks are studied to provide a possible explanation of the experimental results.

We have built an experimental setup to apply Pyragas’s [1992, 1993] control method in order to stabilize unstable periodic orbits (UPO) in Chua’s circuit. We have been able to control low period UPO embedded in the double scroll attractor. However, experimental results show that the control method is useful under some restrictions we will discuss.

This paper examines the impact that climate change may have on the lodging of oats in the Republic of Ireland and the UK. Through the consideration of a novel lodging model representing the motion of an oat plant due to the interaction of wind and rain and integrating future predictions of wind and rainfall due to climate change, appropriate conclusions have been made. In order to provide meteorological data for the lodging model, wind and rainfall inputs are analysed using 30 years’ time series corresponding to peak lodging months (June and July) from 38 meteorological stations in the United Kingdom and the Irish Republic, which enables the relevant probability density functions (PDFs) to be established. Moreover, climate data for the next six decades in the British Isles produced by UK climate change projections (UKCP18) are analysed, and future wind and rainfall PDFs are obtained. It is observed that the predicted changes likely to occur during the key growing period (June to July) in the next 30 years are in keeping with variations, which can occur due to different husbandry treatments/plant varieties. In addition, the utility of a double exponential function for representing the rainfall probability has been observed with appropriate values for the constants given.

Abstract Towed underwater cable models have been validated using experimental results performed in the current channel at Laboratório de Ondas e Correntes (LOC) at COPPE/UFRJ, Rio de Janeiro. The numerical simulators utilize a Finite Difference Method to solve the Partial Differential Equations describing the dynamics of a towed underwater cable under tension. A non-dimensional analysis of the system dynamics for the two-dimensional case has been performed, with non-dimensional governing equations being presented. The experimental setup consists of two cable sections of ∼1.5 m length each, the first having 3 mm diameter and slightly positive wet weight while the second section has 2.5 mm diameter and slight negative wet weight. With the cable in steady-state condition, the towpoint is moved 0.50 m sideways and the time for the cable to return to straight tow is measured. Further, the cable depths at midpoint and tail are measured in steady-state. Experiments are performed at currents ranging from 0.17 to 0.47 m/s. The presented experimental results are compared to the numerical results. Reasonable agreements are obtained.

Abstract. This paper describes a comparison between two soil moisture prediction models. One is MORECS (Met Office Rainfall and Evaporation Calculation Scheme), the Met Office soil moisture model that is used by agriculture, flood modellers and weather forecasters to initialise their models. The other is MOSES (Met Office Surface Exchange Scheme), modified with a runoff generation module. The models are made compatible by increasing the vegetation information available to MOSES. Both models were run with standard parameters and were driven using meteorological observations at Wallingford (1995-1997). Detailed soil moisture measurements were available at a grassland site and a woodland site in this area. The comparison between the models and the observed soil moisture indicated that, for the grassland site, MORECS dried out too quickly in the spring and, for the woodland site, was too wet. Overall, the performance of MOSES was superior. The soil moisture predicted by the new, modified MOSES will be included as a product of Nimrod - the 5 km x 5km gridded network of observed meteorological data across the UK. This report investigates the flight dynamics of a small-scale (2 ft) towed system using a quadcopter and actively controlled payload. A towed system includes a main driver to propel the system forward connected to a payload via a tether. The towed system here is unique, and in that the driver is a scratch built quadcopter while the payload is also a scratch built actively controlled aircraft. The payload is designed to carry a small instrument that must be sufficiently far away from all interferences created by a quadcopter. A fully non-linear full state model is created and utilized to reveal that oscillations in the payload are decreased with the introduction of a PD controller on the payload. An experimental setup is built to validate simulation results. Experiments show that an actively controlled payload can decrease the attitude oscillations of the payload.

The sub-structure of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) stocks in the North Sea has important consequences for fisheries management as the Common Fisheries Policy moves towards a more regional approach. We investigated the movements, distribution and behaviour of cod in the southern North Sea (ICES IVc) and English Channel (ICES VIId) by re-analysing historic data from conventional tagging experiments, and by conducting new experiments with electronic tags. Cod tagged and released in IVc showed a northwards shift in distribution during the feeding season consistent with a homing migration away from spawning grounds along the coasts of the UK and the Netherlands. In contrast, cod tagged and released in VIId did not exhibit a consistent pattern of seasonal movement. Many cod released in VIId were subsequently recaptured close to their release position, although some moved out of the Channel and into the southern North Sea. Overlap between the recapture areas of cod released in the different management areas was no more than 25% in either the spawning or feeding season. Behavioural data from electronic tags suggest that cod in IVc make use of tidal streams to migrate northwards and eastwards in spring, whereas selective tidal stream transport was rarely exhibited by cod tagged and released in VIId. Overall, the evidence suggests that there are behavioural differences between cod in IVc and VIId that limit the mixing of cod from these two areas during the feeding and spawning seasons.
